Well, it's about time this happened... We're going to have a terminology thread, somewhere to find translations for all those Japanese terms you keep hearing in class!

I'm eventually going to lock this post and make it a sticky so that all the information will be in the first post. If anyone would like to contribute to the list, copy it and add your own translations in the correct place, using the same format as I've already started.

I know that I've probably missed an awful lot, but for a 30 minute job on a saturday morning, I think I've done ok so far!

One more request: try to use correct Romaji where possible (excluding the accents, which I haven't worked out how to do yet!)

    Have fun!

Edited a little bit by me for style and minor spelling corrections.

I've also added a few points of clarification and a couple more entries. Not a bad start, keep it coming everyone!

Edit: Anyone remember which way round Renzoku-waza and Renraku-waza go? They're both "continuation attacks), but one is in a different direction and the other is in the same direction, and now I can't remember which is which!

But it's going to be so much more fun making our own :)

The advantage is that it might spark discussion into interpretation of certain terms (budo is often a fun one to work out, for example)

    Much obliged!

Out of curiosity, is "Empi" actually written "Enpi" in your katakana writing guide there? If so, is this a word which changes it's pronunciation, or is it simply that the Japanese have no single character for writing "m", so they substituted it?

  8. Kogusoku

    Aegis,

In Japanese, m & n are used interchangably in words. Words like 燕飛 can be pronounced as either "enpi" or as "empi". Same with the Japanese pronunciation of fist-method/sword-method 拳法/剣法, these words can be pronounced as either "kenpo" or as "kempo". It's really up to the user of the language it's a very fluid thing.

Empi happens to be a kata in Karatedo and is the Japanese pronunciation for Wanshu, which is a native Okinawan term. The kanji literally mean swallow flying, which is a metaphor for how you are to strike with your elbow.
