Sticks, not focus mitts

Has anyone used sticks as a training aid, rather than focus mitts?

This idea is new to me, but from what I've seen it could promote accuracy.

    Any thoughts or tips?

Ricky Hatton uses just the one stick here and gives a good reason why.

Back in normal mode now, thats really interesting, as pads aren't that tough texture wise,

I've seen Guru Inosanto doing it. He does it, it must be good.

I have used them before for variation and timing. They are suprisingly useful as a compliment to focus mitts

If I remember I will post an example of our drills

I tried striking sticks with punches but I personally don't like it. I felt it goes against some of the principles we are teaching.

Don't get me wrong, I love sticks as training aids. Usually single stick and body padding. In these drills, (1) single stick is to be evaded, slipped, blocked using forearm or elbow, or checked/parried with hand. Student (2) punches or kicks to body in combination with #1 evasion/covering.

0:24 of this clip shows Guro Dan using double sticks as the target

I tend to use single with my guys because I deploy it as an offensive tool mid drill, and it allows for traps/follow ups

That uke is a handsome one eh.

Side note: absolutely love panantukan. Wish I could get a class of it on its own.

I've been eager to try them. Smaller, thinner target to hit and it seems to go easier on the trainer's hands.

If I understand correctly, I think I prefer that too. Also training knives mid-drill.

I'm increasingly seeing mma people use swimming noodles as a supplement to pass. Only input I can give

Yes! This is less stress on the usually older trainers shoulders from impact. Harder target better accuracy. It is commonly used at my gym
