I have to clarify that I am talking mostly about young males near my age.
No one of them view self-defence as a mean to avoid fighting.

They see it as a mean to prevail in a fight breaking after a provocation.

They vaguely understand the risks, but not fully realise them and that's the real issue
    in my opinion.

I have engaged in discussion with guys that practice martial arts as a hobby and I assure you they don't know the first thing about self-defence.

Not that the older males are any better. I see fights and quarrels between drivers very often.

As someone who's trained in both I'd make the following points

Yes BJJ is a derivative of JJJ. It has specialised in groundwork and, as a result, has a reduced emphasis on standing, striking, weapons etc
I don't know any BJJ'ers who would pretend otherwise and in my view this is very different from a degradation of JJJ

BJJ and Judo, both derivatives of JJJ, changed the curriculum in response to their circumstances and the increasing focus on randori. It's natural for all styles, including JJJ to evolve to fit the changing circumstances, and probably there's an interesting debate to be had on the trade offs of increasing randori vs keeping it "whole"

One final observation: Unless you live in a very hot climate you'll find people wearing clothing that's pretty similar to a gi. Even T-shirts stop stretching at some point. So in my view training with a gi has a lot of cross over for a street situation

Good luck to you. I hope you gain some more maturity before someone gets hurt.

Yep. But look at the whole situation - did he feel his life was in jeopardy if he did not act? I would say "yes", therefore he acted. Is your girl's life in jeopardy if some guy pats her butt? No. Is it worth the escalation? Can you control your pride and ego and walk away?

Unlikely? Look into some news stories. There are a lot of cases where the 'defender' ends up getting into pretty severe legal trouble, sometimes even while using what seems to be proper level of force. Nowadays, every one has a camera (video on a phone) and your actions can very easily end up in front of a police officer or court.

At the risk of sounding cliche, the more I learn, the less likely I am to use the physical techniques. I am less likely to put myself into situations that could blow up and more likely to de-escalate to look for the escape with the least possible force.

For me, legal entanglements could lead to me losing my life, my freedom (jail), and my job. And for what? Because someone touched my woman? Sorry, not worth the risk.

Um, I go to a bar with my wife at least monthly. We walk home drunk every time. And no one ever, I mean ever, has slapped her ass or otherwise picked a fight with me. Ever. In fact, there has never been so much as a loud argument at any time at any bar we've been to.

^^ THAT ^^ is real life for real grown-ups.
What you're talking about is fantasy to me.

Username Khanartist (con artist) claims he gets into or sees fights with multiple attackers and weapons more often than not at bars, says he works at DoD (dept. of defense,) and is slagging off BJJ on a martial arts forum.

    ...trolling? :)
