    Throwback, er, Monday. :)
You know, for the title. It's Memorial Day here. Don't forget about them. :)

Some songs are supposed to be played loudly on a holiday morning, and I think this is one of them. :)

I am listening to a cover and the original, back to back- several times over. One of my ALL TIME favorite bands is Jefferson Airplane. So, when I heard Pink did a cover of White Rabbit, I was dubious. When someone does a cover of a classic signature song of a band, they better be good.

For example- I thought the Dixie Chicks deserved all the difficulties they faced, but because of their atrocious cover of Fleetwood Mac's Silver Springs rather than what the singer said about President Bush.

But Pink's cover is really excellent! Truly great! As one of the most die hard Airplane fans around, I have to say I approve of and enjoy her cover. I just read that Grace Slick approves too.

I thought Grace Slick's statement was right on target.

I think the guitar is not quite as good, but still really well done. Just not as subtle as Jorma Kaukonen's original playing. A tad more hard rockish. I slightly prefer the original guitar, but still. This really is great! And if this cover brings people to learning about Jefferson Airplane, that would make be very happy. I think Airplane was one of the greatest bands of all time, but they are falling into obscurity over time. As Psychedelic Rock just isn't as popular over multiple generations, Jefferson Airplane just doesn't seem to get full proper credit in rock history.

And while I was at it, I pulled up the actual original of the song. For those that don't know, Grace brought that song over from her previous band. This was written and performed with her previous band- The Great Society. "Someobody to Love" was originally a Great Society song as well. Grace doesn't even start with the lyrics until almost 4 and a half minutes into it. It starts with a long psychedelic jam.

One of their best and like a lot of punk PIL and The Sex Pistols were musically underrated.

The guitar on this is excellent and sounds awesome on a good set of speakers.

You'll all hate this next one, but it's one of my favourites.

I think you had to have been in the small underground clubs or part of the UK Fresh scene at the inception of house/rap to appreciate this.

Those that were there will tell you Tim Westwood has always been an idiot.

Short haired louts the lot of 'em and you should know better, Simon. :)

Lydon might not be considered much off a singer, but he is/was a brilliant vocalist, front man and lyricist. And Jones' guitar work.....

I don't get it. I do get the sense that she could open the throttle more at any time, but she couldn't be stuffed. Just sounds lazy to me. I want "When the men on the chessboard.." (around 1:23) to tear a hole in the back of my head, but she's in cruise control by that point in the song.

    The Cure - Wish
Great upbeat poppy follow-up to disintegration. Possibly their best, in my opinion. High, Doing the Unstuck, Wendy Time, A letter to Elise, Friday I'm in Love.

I have been hearing Skepta a lot on the radio. Grime is a genre I have never actually had a taste for but I think I will like this album.

Jesse Cook - The Blue Guitar Sessions
Typically known for his Rumba Flamenco style of guitar playing Jesse changes things up with a Cd of darker, sometimes bluesy tunes. Emma Lee provides vocals on a couple tracks, including a cover of I put a spell on you. Over all a good CD, but I prefer the flamenco.
