They're both pretty awful compared to the Dubliners' version

Edit: but if we're on to rock covers of Irish folk songs...

The original stairway to heaven was called "Taurus" and was by the band "Spirit". :)

And talking of Zeppelin covers this is damn good. I don't think you can ever really match Bonzo's drums on the original (maybe of you play at the bottom of a stairwell like he did?) but damn these ladies pretty much nail it.

You do know that Led Zeppelin's version was actually a cover, don't you?

You're forgiven if you don't, because it was one of a number which they didn't bother crediting to the original author.

Yeah I kind of knew...although I thought it was in the realms of Led Zeppelin where it was taken from somewhere else and then had lots of other thing added and brought together.
Isn't it an old blues number or something?
I gotta say...I like the original but I think the Led Zeppelin version is one of the best things humans have ever recorded. I could listen to the drum intro in repeat for the rest of my life I think.

I much prefer the cover version, although perhaps that's simply a case of modern taste.

It was originally by Moaning Minnie.

I must say that their version is one of my favourite Zep songs. The drums send shivers down my spine. I can take or leave a lot of their stuff, but I can't leave that one.

Not a massive fan of the Pistols, although Lydon is great and I am glad to see he has had a bit of a comeback recently, but I do like this.

Metallica do a damn good "Stone cold crazy".
Strictly speaking I think I'd call "Walk this way" by RUN DMC a cover and I think that bests the original.

I remembered one of my favourite singles from the late 70s/ early 80s So Cal punk scene is a cover. I heard this years ago and always loved the garage rock feel and slightly surf drummers. It wasn't until YouTube was invented that I found it was a cover originally done by garage band The Seeds.

One of my most prized possessions record-wise.

    The original by the Seeds.

    [ame="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IReb27tFqMg"]THE SEEDS -PUSHIN'TOO HARD - YouTube[/ame]

I think this was originally done by the Flamin' Groovies.

And I think everyone knows who these are originally by....or they should at least.

Close enough to a "cover" for me just because today is Friday -- I seriously love this song. I play it on a great many Fridays because it's just so ... so awesome.

Uh...that's Memphis Minnie, Johnno ... lol, what's on yer mind, good fellow? ha.

The lyrics are the same - everything else and I do mean everything is completely different.

Its a different song. The arrangement, keys, time sig, way the instruments were played are totally different - its a different song.

Why they used the lyrics, I've no clue. They did that alot. Completely different songs with lyrics harkening back to old bluesmen of the 20's and 30's.

My guess is Bobby Plant presented lyrics to arrangements that Page and Jones came up with - the rest of the lads were clueless. They didn't have instantaneous checks the way they do now.

That'd be the only answer that'd make sense.

"NO Fun" was another cover they did better'n the original.

This is so raw, lol. I like this'n solely for the look on Jones' face when someone tries to take the Mickey outta him.

I follow Steve Jones on Instagram...one of the coolest guitarists around, a little more mature mind, but still full of swagger and attitude. I think he boxes actually.

    More great Pistols covers.

I have just come to the conclusion that I actually do like the Pistols as long as I never mind the bollocks surrounding them...I am just too ashamed to admit it. :)
Getting Vicious on bass was probably the biggest mistake in music history.

Ja, Jone's has been a long favourite of mine as well. Vastly underrated guitarist - I think the Pistols have hung round the neck of his career to the point where its done him more harm than good.

I don't know why Lydon brought Sid into the band - he knew Ja Wobble about the same time - didn't fit the punk "image", I suppose.

    Everything is clear in hindsight.

This is from the Atlanta gig. It was their first stop on their only U.S. "tour". Ironically, I happened to be in ------ at the time ( for the last time ) and just barely missed them. I doubt if I would've gone to the show, anyroad. The Pistols had almost exclusively nothing but bad press in the States and me being 13 I believed what I'd heard - that their music was rubbish and I was still into bands like Nazareth, Thin Lizzy and the like.

If you listen closely, around the end of the the clip, you can hear Sid taking the **** out of the Southern audience "hi, y'all! hi, Y'ALL" lol.

Randy Newman is a great lyricist, he just sings like he is an anemic with a head wound.
