Hey guys, 3 weeks ago i switched off of low carb. I just was not recovering from hard work outs. Instead of a day or two it would take a week to recover from a hard work out.

So 3 weeks ago i went to a more normal diet with carbs and what not while following the numbers i got from the various calculators. Which normally are very close to right for me.

I have been trying to keep my calories at about 2600 aday. Which according to the calculators should be 500 under maintenance for me. Protein at 240 and carbs about 160-180 aday..

I expected some weight gain but not like this. I started at 303lb then immediately jumped to 306 now im at 311lb. This is over a period 3 weeks.

Can someone who knows what their doing help me.

I wouldnt have posted here as this is a dead forum but i can get into starting strength their password recovery tool is messed up.

    FunnyBadger I love food :)

I'm assuming that your activity levels have not dropped off at all and all other factors (sleep, stress etc) are equal. Are you finding any improvements in your recovery now? If not then you may as well go back to your carb free diet if that was working for weight loss. If you are recovering better it may be worth trying to bring your daily calorie intake down a little more (100-200 a day les nothing drastic) and seing if that helps if not try slightly reducing the carb intake down to around 100g and upping the protein a bit. I'm no dietician just guessing there so take that advice accordingly, seems sound to me though lol.

As for why you have gained so quickly it might be that something your eating isnt agreeing with you. Also the quality of the carbs is important aswell, things like wholemeal pasta and brown rice are much better options than white bread and sugar for example because of (insert science here).

Not a huge help for you there, hopefully someone else will come along and do a better job than me.

How often are/were you having hard workouts?

Low carb diets mean lower insulin levels. Insulin is responsible for fat storage. Switching back to higher carb means you are increasing insulin levels, and this means your body wants to store more fat. Energy in/energy out is a useful concept, but the reality is actually a little more complex than that when you are looking at weight gain.

Not yet Zaad but im considering it.

Kave, I am getting so tired of the low carb diet. Having to miss out on family gatherings and people feeling insulted because i wont eat there food. Its absolutely horsecrap that the only way i am able to loose weight is on that.

I am so tired of looking at things as a poison, looking at delicious food and knowing i cant ever eat it. I am tired if never recovering properly from work outs. It should not take a week to recover from a hard CF type work out. That is unacceptable.

Those calculators only work if you are measuring your portion sizes right. Are you weighing your food, or are you just eyeballing it? Are you drinking alcohol or soda? If so - stop it.

Not all carbs are created equal. Get your carb quota from plant foods and ditch the processed carbs.

The reality of the situation is you are very overweight. Saying yes to all those delicious foods got you in this mess and saying no is the only realistic way you are getting out of it.

seikan steve im not sure what your saying? Im not trying to troll or anything, im genuinely looking for help.

That number is what the diet calculators i have been using told me to eat at. So im hoping you could enlighten me as to what your trying to say. The calculators said eat 2600 a day and that is what im doing..

Im not sure how to interpret your post. Do you think i should be eating more or less? Becuase at this point im likely to start dropping calories till i see movement. My next stop after this week is 2k, after that 1800k..

Holy yes i weigh my food every day. I dont eat much processed carbs. Rice, broccoli, spinach and green beans and skinless boneless chicken are what i eat daily..

Do realize how many arguments and ****ed off people i have in my life every holiday now because i wont eat their food? Do you know how stupid I look at parties now?

All im saying is i did the carb deprivation thing for over a year. Now i need to reintegrate them back into my life. I can not continue to look at them as poison and avoid them all for some unrealistically low number.

I am trying to do two things, continue to loose weight while reintegrating half the food pyramid back into my life.

Don't do this, you'll make yourself ill.

Start looking at this long term, rather than wanting to see the weight suddenly drop off.

You need to start looking at 6 week to 3 month segments.

If you are working out you need to be fuelling those workouts.

You need to find the right caloric intake that maintains your current weight, and find the foods that have you recovering properly, sleeping well, having comfortable and regular bowel movements, good skin, teeth, hair and so on.

This I would suggest is a 6 week programme.

Keep a diary of what you eat and drink.

Note down how you feel each morning and start to relate it to the foods you eat.

Keep hydrated. Waiting until you are thirsty is no good.

Once you have found a balance then you can start reducing the calories.

A maximum of 500 calories a day and again you need to monitor for 6 weeks to 3 months before changing any programme.

As for family gathering, use them as cheat days.

    Cheat days keep you sane.

No foods are off limits, but you do need to understand the basic requirements to maintain good health before you can start experimenting with dropping calories.

It is often a case of:

Client "I want to lose weight"

    Trainer "eat more then".

Take care of your health, sleep well, keep hydrated, eat clean, have cheat days, eat if you're hungry (fuel the fire) and watch our for overeating.

Keep it simple and learn as you go.

    Good luck.

    right.

    Advice:

Go see a Dr, get a glucose clearing test done.

Do not go from zero carb to eating 160-180g a day, start gradually and build up, start at around 60-70 and work back up.

Do not start questions with "i'm only here because i couldn't log on elsewhere"

you need to improve your relationship with food, it sounds very negative right now.

Sounds like you need more fats too, add in a couple grams of fish oil per meal, factor them into your calories for now, L-carnatine stacks well with fish oil too, since its cheap as water i'd throw 500mg in the morning down too.

Sounds like your metabolism is petty damaged from years of low carb and not eating enough fats to compensate, this is a slow process to repair.

    Do you train?

In hind sight saying this is a dead forum i wouldnt have normally posted on was not a good call. Its just it seams this forum is not as active as the rest of the subforums and i chose my words poorly. So if i offended anyone with that comment im sorry.

I was on starting strength becuase those guys are professional cutters and powerlifters i figured that was a good place to start.

Lets see i normally eat 5 meals a day, with lunch broken up into meals. Each being consumed every 2 hours or so. I eat a chicken breast at each one. With lunch one and lunch 2 i have a quarter cup of rice with the chicken. At lunch 3 i either have some broccoli or a small/medium yam.(YUM) Dinner is 2 chicken breasts(skinless boneless, baked) and some steamed broccoli.

My meal choices are pretty consistent.

You don't have to refuse every time. Just don't gorge. If someone is trying to force half a chocolate cake down your throat, just politely explain that you are trying to get your weight down. When I've been cutting I've never had anyone argue with me because I've requested a much smaller portion than other people.

When you say you are 311lbs it actually tells us very little. Are you 6'5" of muscle, or are you a 5'4" wobbling bowl of fat? Your ideal calorie intake would vary a lot between those two extremes, as should any advice on how to manage your calorie intake.

I was weight lifting a year ago but due to injuring my knee on the hipsled(some how i injured the tendon the outside of my left knee doing it) i am doing the stationary bike only. I am currently doing martial arts but im in a limbo state with that because i am having a hard time deciding on what to stick with.

So i normally ride 45minutes a day, but i dont go by time i go by the calorie counter. I normally ride till it says 600 which is usually 10.1 miles a hour at 14.5mph average.

However due to my recent weight gain i have upped it to 20.1 miles, 84 minutes,1200 calories on the counter. I do not miss a day of biking on my stationary. In fact i just finished a session.

My bad, i didnt think of that. Im 5'8" tall. So ya im a land whale. I dont go to the beach any more. Last time i did people put wet towels on me and tried to roll me back into the ocean...

Holy, its not people forcing food at me. Its people getting ****ed im not eating much if any of there food. Take my wife's grandmothers thanksgiving party a few weeks ago. Literally nothing there even remotely healthy to eat. All processed carby nonsense not even any meat. Lots of carb heavy soups and casseroles and other such things. Plus an entire table dedicated to dessert... I didnt eat very much. However the hostess kept asking if i was ok and why i wasn't eating. Later after i left she complained to the my mom in law about how rude it was i was not eating and how insulted she was.

Its also important to know your lean mass. Online calorie calculators make assumptions based on averages, but these assumptions can be quite inaccurate. I would recommend getting a caliper test done. Then calculate your calorie input as slightly less than your maintenance level for your lean mass, rather than for your current weight. You want to be eating for your ideal weight instead of for your current weight.
