And, Debbie Reynolds has now passed away from a stroke, one day after her daughter died. http://comicbook.com/popculturenow/2016/12/28/legendary-actress-debbie-reynolds-dies-at-84/
I'm not a girl (duh, stating the obvious -- and in other news, froze lakes are really cold) but I always liked in an unconscious way just what I unconsciously knew, but your post here brings to my conscious comprehension for the first time in almost 40 years. And that is, that Princess Leia was not a damsel in distress. Sure, Luke had to rescue her in the original movie, but remember -- she was tortured before he rescued her, and SHE DID NOT BREAK. Darth Vader could not break her. And in "Empire" she's a General, right? Or an Admiral. One or the other. Whatever, the fact is, she's a really high ranking officer, not a low-ranking weak character. And in "Jedi" she goes undercover into the "belly of the beast" -- hello!!!" -- and then outright kills Jaba the Hutt with her bare hands -- hello!!!. Bad ass, come on. She's a bad ass. And seriously, that's why I love her. She will kill me dead because she is tough. She is fully awesome in the movies.

Whilst I'm not a big Disney Princess Fan usually, it would allow another generation of girls (and boys) to see this empowering character and hopefully encourage her positive message.
