Edit: My mistake - I think we are talking about different footwork.

This picture taken at the MAP Meet is interesting in terms of technique.

Those of you who took the boxing session will remember I said too keep an approximate 90 degree angle in the lead elbow as Mushroom has done, as the peek a boo style I've adopted allows the opponent half a step closer.

In this picture we both have a similar stance, hip, shoulder and head position, but my lead arm is closer to my head.

Look how much further my jab would have to travel in comparisons to Mushrooms.

Nothing wrong with the peek a boo style of course, but in this snap shot it's interesting to see how you could lose an advantage by adopting it.

True, but it also leaves you in a lovely position to do siko (elbow) guntings in the style of "crazy monkey defense." And, since in FMA we're always assuming that there's a weapon in play that we haven't seen yet, it makes your hand a harder target. Extend your hand too much and it becomes the first target of opportunity.

As you can tell, I tend to keep my hands in about the same place. And now I'm furiously trying to legitimate it. ;)

I also tend to turn my palms inward, in a sort of (close) John Sullivan pugilism style. I'm not really clear how I arrived at that. But, again, thinking of it from an FMA angle, it offers some protection to all those important bits in my wrists should the other guy start waving a knife around.

Elbow guntings? Is that like when put your hand by your ear to block?

Any vids / pics to demo the move?

Yeah, that's right. Technically, it might not be a gunting because the word gunting means "scissors." So just putting your elbow up and taking a punch on it isn't officially a gunting because there's no scissoring action there. But it tends to get used to describe any limb destruction action, in my experience.

Rodney King's "crazy monkey defense" was developed independent of FMA (if I'm not mistaken) but is very similar.

Short video, but it gives the idea: [ame="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Le17cYBBCbQ"]https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Le17cYBBCbQ[/ame]

Thanks Ap. I was a bit confused by the terminology. We just call it an elbow block or destruction.

I quite like Kings stuff, I think it'd work well for me, but a bit hard to train it.

Yeah, we used to call it a destruction too. "Limb destruction" started to sound a bit melodramatic to me at some point. So I went back to the more nebulous (and technically erroneous) label "gunting." ;)

We call that first pic a "face gunting." Simon is scissoring the opponent's punch between his shoulder and the hinge of his jaw. Rendering the opponent's attack... even more powerful.

Always been a failing of mine.

I believe I was demonstrating how you can do from in range and then by just placing the rear heel on the floor, out of range.

Once their punch is on it's way back to their guard position you can just raise the rear heel and be in range again.

That's a much more reasonable explanation than mine. ;)

It sounds like an even more minimalist approach to what my teacher called the half-step.

Sorry I've now shot the video I promised.

I didn't think my student was going to show for her private lesson today and was all set to go in front of the camera when she turned up.

I was teaching footwork today, so here is a quick video from class and some of the stuff I want to break down is shown here.

Another clip of CACC training with Harry - this one shows a way to counter someone getting underhooks in.

Video of one of our instructors on Thai Pads from the Thai Pad session I ran earlier today. His overall technique is generally pretty solid so I thought I'd share it here.

Just a quick video today shot during yesterday's class.

The class was on entries for the straight blast, one of which is from the sipa, or low line kick.

Here I've just done the sipa, using the front foot to keep me out of punching range.

If I am going to straight blast it'll be once I've trapped the opponents arms. In this case I'll start hitting with my left as soon as it's touched my sparring partner's arms.

I do have a very short video of my students doing the actual straight blast, so once edited I'll add it to aid discussion.

Here is the follow up video.

Although two experienced students the straight blast entry in this scenario is fairly new to the both of them.

Entry one from a sipa (practiced earlier in the class).

    Entry two from a jab.

Entry three following a defensive counter to a jab. First an attempt at a split entry, then a lean back evasion then a follow back of the attackers jab.

If entry three had been followed up on it would have been a fight ender.

The idea of the straight blast is to set up the heavy artillery.

This is a clip I posted elsewhere, but will include here too.

As stated in that thread the knife is one of my regular EDC blades (a CRKT M21-14SFG) and is hair shaving sharp. The drill itself is NOT a "how to defend a knife attack" type of a deal, but is to get used to the flow and rhythm and angling. Singh will only does this with about 4 people worldwide, not because if the skill factor but because of the mental one - one panic or flinch and it is pretty messy (in fact in one demo someone panic kicked and was sliced from ankle to kneecap)

I did promise to re-shoot some of the footwork videos and I have now done so.

There are 5 videos, with the first concentrating on triangular footwork, which I never had enough time to cover properly at the MAP Meet.

You'll note we now have an MAP You Tube channel, so please subscribe.
