OK - leave it to the newcomer to wander in and steal the good ideas. There are check-ins in a variety of the style related forums, but as there is no specific Tang Soo Do set I thought I'd set this up here in the Intros.

So past or present students (or teachers) of this art - lets get together here and see how many we number and where abouts we train.

(Underhand reasoning - I'm less than 2 years into my studies, and can only get to one session a week - so as pleased as I am with my green belt, I know that my progress will be 'sedate'. It would be nice to have a specialised list of MAP members to hit on for advice ;) )

    Tang Soo!!

Hey, there! I also noticed that there is no TSD forum, but I still enjoyed the site. You may be right, big stick. It is a nice idea, so I'll jump right in...

My name is Eric, I live in Reno, NV, have been training in martial arts for 23 years, in a wide variety of arts, before finding my true (martial arts) love in Tang Soo Do. Now I am a 3rd degree black belt, and still love the art.

All right, all other TSD'ers, Shout it with pride..... TANG SOO!!

Ask and ye shall recieve! We need to get the word out in different areas in order for TSDers to hear! Mention it everywhere, albiet briefly. TANG SOO!!

Took your advice and stole a trick from JohnnyX - put the link to here into my signature. Hopfully the other 'known' members like Tang_Sou_Tim will spot it and show an interest. ;)

Also - I just re-read your write-up. You sound like a useful guy to have around (23 years - WOW  - I really am a beginner).

Excellent Idea! (wonder why we did not think of this before?)
I don't have a lot of time to scan and add input to the forums lately, but hopefully I will soon. Jang Bong, are you with an organization, and if so, which one?

Well, it's time to write in my journal again, so I have to go. TANG SOO!

The class I go to has an association with NAKMAS (National Association of Karate & Martial Arts Schools), and my teacher Mr Nash as an entry on the eteamz website: http://eteamz.active.com/pyungahn/

He has tried to teach us the history of how he is where he is, but I always was a lousy student of the past. Sounds like a lot of politics in MA... :(

Always has been, always will be. Unfortunatly, not everyone always sees eye to eye, and when the singular person who is holding an organization together leaves or loses power, political struggles begin.

You are getting quite a good turnout here, Jang Bong! Nice idea.

    Tang Soo!

Hi everyone, I started off with Tang Soo Do as my first martial art. Grandmaster Hwang Kee graded me for my 1st dan black belt back in the mid 80s. But then I left the martial arts scene for many years. When I came back, everything .. EVERYTHING had changed. TSD had split into a couple of opposing organisations and I didn't recognised faces or names anymore.

    What the hell happened?

    I have been re-directed!!!

Thanks to Jang Bong for getting me to the right spot! :p

I have been training in TSD for 3 years. My Grandmaster (recently retired) was one of the originals trained by Hwang Kee and sent over here from Korea in 1969. My Sa Bom Nim (3rd Dan) trained under him for 12+ years. Our school is very traditional, which I love.

As stated in my other check-in, I just tested for my BB in May. It was a 3 hour long test that had me going up and doing various things (forms, one-steps, distance one-steps, self defense) with each testing group throughout the entire testing day. I had to perform every form I knew and some in reverse (starting with the opposite side) and some for speed. The killer is always when we have to do jump kicks for 5 minutes (talk about exhausting). We had to do this for pre-test too. I had to spar against one BB, then 2 BB's, then 3 on one. The final sparring was myself and the other BB candidate had to spar together against 4 people. We had to protect ourselves and each other as a team. Then breaking, which I love! I did a 6-station break of various hand and foot techniques, mostly 2-board breaks. My favorite was a double front snap kick. Finished with a 4 brick Jang Kwan. Final test was all the terminology and history and an oral essay on how TSD has affected my life and what I will do with it going forward.

I feel great about the test. It is a belt that is definitely earned and not "paid for." Since our Grandmaster has retired and our school has split off, it was our first TSD BB test. The old school testing had kind of lost it integrity, which was sad.

Anyways, sorry to ramble. Now I have my first test this Saturday starting off on the road to 2nd Dan. Now the training and testing takes a turn and is more focused on precision and power instead of fitness and endurance.

So now I need some creative breaking ideas, any suggestions?

Great to have you aboard - but the more that come the more I'm reminded how little I know.
I've taken this opportunity to scan back through the thread, and I think I'm still the junior member *bows to all around*

At our last grading day, I had the pleasure of watching the junior BBs being tested - and it sounds like our teacher follows the traditional testing methods that you describe (2vs1, 3vs1). I'm glad about this, as it means that whatever level you are assesed to have achieved - you can believe in. :)

As he is 3rd Dan, he works on a continual assessment basis - which means you are always giving full attention and effort through classes. He works on the basis that it doesn't matter how many BBs he has in his classes, he would prefer confident and able students that have a self-protecting view on this world we live in.

I know the he has done breaking throughout his MA career, but it is something that has not entered the Sunday morning lessons - is it compulsary, or am I missing something? As I've mentioned elsewhere, I can only get to the one class per week with him, so progress is slow (but steady :)).

Since you're already stealing ideas Jang Bong, you might want to keep a list that gets updated every now and then, of members and their location, or something like that. We used to have one in the TKD check-in, except that the thread grew out of control and nobody wants to go and ad 50 odd names to the list
