Or chicken(wing) soup for the soul

So a recent thread had some discussion of the kimura, so I thought why not split it off so it has its own thread!

Here is the Kestling video was covers a good standard grappling approach (he's a BJJ Blackbelt and is/was a CSW guy too)
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qp0zShjuAbo&t=3s

Heres a long (and legal) Ryan Hall video detailing a lot of concepts about Kimura/open elbow control -

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9mRsqvRduHY

Heres Josh Barnet Going over his approach to the kimura -

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FhgOed0v9OI

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=35YWLWhMSlI

( I havn't included the kimura from standing/Non dominant position on purpose as I thought id do that in another thread if their was interest!)

So lets pick a detail / or entire video and go from there!

How do you commonly enter it, how do you finish, whats your secondary attacks, or positional transitions that you like to do?

Personally I use it from butterfly loads like this -(garry tonan) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cG8jxHl0qow

and use it to sweep and finish from top, or spin under to take the back/Armbar, if it fails from top flat SC I go to North south, if no joy, either tie up the arm if were wearing Gi and take the back/choke em, or if its no gi - go for a sideways triangle / yoko sankaku, if no finish either choke or bent armlock from their, if still no joy go back to NS and go to the armbar.

Nice idea for a thread and I'll watch the videos when I have more time.

I did a similar flow drill to that shown in the Ryan Hall video in class today and have just been discussing some subtleties with Hannibal.

We should get some good ideas from this thread.

You didn't add the Kesting video.

The DWL is the "bacon" of my submissions...Goes with everything!

I almost always use the thumb and make sure to "rev" the wrist...This makes the subsequent lock excruciating as the joint has no "play"

How do you finish it hannibal?

Side control top, Flat or step over the head?
    Pull to North South Top?

    What about half guard top?

I hit from many, but my "go to" is a spiral from side control...I put the knee alongside the head or else on the temple.

As Harry is my coach it is natural it looks more like Billy than anything else :)

    Ooh look. Today's lesson. :D

The entire series is excellent and just watching the same guy get pounded makes me laugh.

I had trouble today with the last clamp, so seeing how the guy on top manoeuvres around to the head is something to practice in the next lesson.

I like an Iowa ride to kill the guard and pin their hips and then attack the chicken wing.

Personally I like to see and feel what actually happens in an unscripted situation.
That tells me I'll take what I can get in the moment, but like to have as many was as possible and variants and fundamentals in the bag.
So, who knows. The way that works best in the moment for me. Maybe that's too realistic an approach for some haha. Oh well.

What I mean is, here is Sakuraba, one of the best grapplers of his generation, trying and applying double wrist locks in actual fights ( after some demos).
Even for him, it doesn't go as great as the demos. Some he has to fight for and even change to something else.

Nice, so flat as can be, dominate the armpit and with the 'knee on head' pressure to keep the spine bent and stop the reversal.

Ill be trying that this week, i tend to pull them up to NS prematurely, which gives strong guys the time to beat me to the transition.

It also looks similar to feel to this guy -

Any demos? all I can find is a quarters breakdown?

That's exactly how I been taught recently. Revving the wrist like you're on a bike. I been taught/used on with the dwl for a long while by different people and it wasn't until I learned last year of adding in the revving. It tightens everything up and feels horrible.
It even works with people who are super flexible. (when you kimura, and their hand is close to the back of their head and still no tap:eek:)
Now I don't do it any other way.

We can still discuss plan a, plan b, pathways, defence counters etc

The beautiful thing about a DWL/Kimura is that, as a form of limb control you can narrow down your opponents movements / escapes into only a few, this all makes them predictable, and therefore more easily beatable.

Here is Riley Bodycomb's recent article explaining it much better then I ever could -

Probably not. Use the figure 4 to turk their leg, which in turn drives your hips into their's, flattening them out and pinning them. In common with a lot of rides it means you can control them fairly well without using your arms, so you can fully commit your arms to catching the far arm.

My opinion on the kimura has changed over the years. I rarely attempt it from closed guard or even normal half guard. But...I love to use it from knee shield. And that particular way that I use it from knee shield is, I use the kimura lockdown, or what is known as the kimura trap.

It is hugely effective from that position. I can normally submit my opponent with it. And if they try to escape, I have an armbar or a back take option.

it'll be covered on david avelons kimura trap YT video.

If its the one im thinking it is, knee shield, get kimura, invert with outside foot on their near hip and kimura, facedown armbar or spin for the backtake.

So what I'm talking about is the above video. The only difference is that instead of doing it from standard half guard, I hit it from knee shield half. It feels better and overall more solid.
