These have been great to watch, thanks Chadderz! Often I have heard about how the ground is a terrible place to end up in for self defense but this makes me reconsider

Some of those were self defence, others were just fights.

You really shouldn't. Just because there's.someone doing it on YouTube doesn't mean it will work the same way for you.

We were taught in the police that the most dangerous time when dealing with a suspect was when restraining/cuffing them and though I was lucky enough to not get hurt in that situation there were times when it was by the grace of God alone.

The ground is a terrible place to end up. Particualy if you do not know what you are doing. If you are on the ground and you are not used to it and you are fighting a guy who is used to it, you have lost.

Most reasonably informed people would say that some experience on the ground is essential for self defense.

But (and this is were it gets contentious) it is very very difficult to defend against more than one opponent if you are on the ground. Particualy if one of your opponents is standing as they can move much more freely and can strike downward / kick / stamp with a lot of power. Intentionally going to the ground makes you much more vulnerable to multiple attackers. It also greatly restrict your ability to run away.

Not to be the odd one out..

What do you like about it Chadderz? I found it hard to tell who was doing wing chun in a few of the bouts, didn't think that many were really real fights (in spite of the vid title, eg like what was the point to making a guy fight with 16 oz gloves against a WC guy in MMA gloves?) and didn't really give me any reason to pause and say, there's a skill set that will really make a difference.

    What did you see?

    )

I seen people trying and testing their skills. If they can do it to someone, I can use it too.

Fair enough but that applies to any style/anyone who does some pressure testing. I was looking for something that showed an advantage to using WC. I only say this because it was hard to see where there was an advantage, who was doing WC and what , in terms of WC skills, was useful. Historicly, other than for a limited number of practitioners eg Alan Orr etc you rarely see WC dominating in a match. The majority of fights seem to end with the WC guy getting clobbered.

So then, the video really isn't about WC, just about that you like seeing anyone try their stuff out? Fair enough!

Well it's about them trying out WC, a style that gets slated for not doing enough resistive training. I appreciate people testing it and not following dogma. Would love a Ninjutsu version.

Here's part 2 although in the comments section the people seem to be saying, there is no wing chun being done in the fights except for at 1:34.

I know what you mean about the criticisms. Part of the problem is that when you think about it WC is the most popular KF system on the planet yet has only a small number of people participating in tournaments/fighting (tooo deadly), often only fight in tourney's only for WC (the rules the other guys use are against us) and finally a number of practitioners can't make the transition from theory to practice (I CAN turn, use round techniques as well sometimes? REALLLY?).

I only say this because of observation over the years (and oh yeah, my first BB is in WC :' )

I really don't want to necro this thread for the sake of it but it's my favourite video on Wing Chun.

Here's another peice of gold from Alan Orr, a controversial figure in Wing Chun but he makes efforts to prove it is effective:

Agreed. I train BJJ, a style specialising in fighting on the ground, and I have heard this from several instructors. Not sure anyone would disagree. One of the things most BJJ schools will teach quite early on is methods of standing up while maintaining a good balance base and defending from incoming strikes.

I was wondering the same thing.

Just looked like arm punching with no footwork. Two blokes standing toe-to-toe and slapping each other with gloves :dunno:
