Getting annoyed that my strength is still not 100% returned on the flat and also the incline bench.
    I was benching 100kg, 1rm of around 120>130. But I'm struggling at 80kg.
With my coach, he blames it on being in a gym where we couldn't bench properly. Laden with max 30kg db to press with and nothing else.
I seem to be getting stronger everywhere else. I'm bigger and more "cut" as it were. A lot of people are commenting that I look slimmer despite me being the heaviest I ever have. Which I guess can be a good thing.
Still having issues attending classes though. Availability, location and time all working against me at the moment.

Sorry for the downer post but lately I been finding that writing is a good source of release despite it being one of my weaker attributes.

I am however itching to draw and paint again.

So it's been a year. Consistency in training hasn't been great, I've been playing catch up and focusing more on form rather than increasing the weight.

However spending money on a bodybuilders gym and also joining an MMA gym near me, I'm now more active this year than I have in 2015. Which I would have to say, been pretty much my most inactive (apart from some lifting).

I'm still playing catch up in regards to weights, but having my training partner slap me in regards to form. So although I'm "weaker" at least I can say I "look" better.

Deadlifts are still an issue. My wobbly knee can't seem to get past the 120kg mark without sliding all over the place.
I have a long weekend off coming up, so I'm considering asking the owner of the gym to do a couple of sessions with me in regards to leg training
(dude squats over 300kg reps and has an insane calf press...imagine a rugby ball with a baby's foot. And that's his calf)

On the good news, I'm doing no gi, without the knee brace now so there's some form of improvement somewhere. Just as long as I'm careful in being taken down etc.

If I had a resolution for 2016, it would be re-working the basics.

Took a training seminar by the legendary grappler Dean Lister!

He's an awesome guy! Very down to Earth and funny as heck.
Covered quite a few submission which is definately sticking and adding to the repetoire.
Of course being a leg lock specialist himself I have to admit, both my achilles are a bit sore.

Also just to show that even though, he is one of the best guys around he is still evolving. He mentioned about a previous seminar few years ago but with the same group and said..."Remember that thing I taught last time? Here's a better/different variation"

Which just goes to show and to remind everyone that one is always learning no matter at what level.

We also compared knee injuries :p

As an aside, I just looked him up again. I didn't know he teaches in Fabio Santos school now. My sister trained there for a short time. Watched a class once and watched her at his tournament once.

Had one last grappling session before a wrestling comp. Covering the super basics and being corrected with minor techniques.
Havent been feeling the best lately. Low mood, irritable gut been...irritable and a bit of a cold.
However, had a bit of a confidence boosting grappling session.
I saw moves coming at me and actually react better. Was told I kept very tight and had clean moves. So thats a positive.

Not placing this in the Comp's Corner.

    Bit of a downer post.
As previous post, I went up Norf (way past the M25 for my liking) and competed in an Open Intercomp of sorts. I haven't competed in a year but I was invited and I felt "Why Not? How many times does a strapping young lad like me gets invited by an older Gent, to roll around with other blokes in their skivvies?"

Anyway, I put my name down for the No Gi. I remember in the 1st match, guy slipped out of my Russian and got me in an attempted guillotine and I took him down for that and ended up in his guard. The TD felt good.
I can't remember what's it called, but I tried a guard pass, where I tried to stack him and then trap one of his arms behind him. Didn't work exactly, mostly because I forgot what to do.
A bit of hand fighting and he caught me in a kimura, I felt that my flexibility was working for me but I had the Ref questioning me. I got rolled to my side and the Ref stopped it, as he felt my arm was over extended. I wasn't mad.

I then lost the 2nd match, which angered me as I was dominating, but for some reason when I scrambled, I just froze like a deer in headlights and got side controlled and americana'd. I was visibly seething according to a friend who saw.

I took that with me on the next match. I bullied him about, as I was bigger, he scrambled off an ankle pick I did and he took my back, I remember getting out of a Rear Naked and we kept scrambling. I got him in a knee bar, he escaped and somehow I was in a De La Riva guard, with no clue what to do.
I got the guy in a knee bar again and it must've been tight because I could hear my corner telling me I got it and pull.
I must've not squeezed my knees together or something, because sudden intense pain came out on my ankle and I actually felt it give a little. I let go and tried to roll out but I tapped.

That dropped me out of the comp all together.

I spoke to the guy after, turned out that it was a calf crusher variant (it still aches). That guy ended up getting Gold in the comp and from looking at the rest (including the silver he beat) I actually gave him the most trouble. (I lasted maybe 10 seconds longer than the rest ;P)

I guess that's the only positive I can take out of it. I have a plan to work on certain things. There's maybe another comp in a couple of months.
I'm also thinking of dropping back to 85kg (from 95) maybe even lower, but at the age of 37 I know that's going to be tough.

I'm angry, I'm seething. But I'm planning to wreck people in 2017 and I'm stepping up my game big time.

There was a photog at the comp, trying to find pics.

Back on the mats since the comp.

Discussed what I wanted to work on and after the class drills that's what I did. My aim was the scramble, don't stop moving. Deliberately placed myself in comprimising positions and go from there.
I knackered myself out with trying to do a flow (as it were).

I even managed a surprise Fireman Carry Throw from my knees and even a SeoNage from my knee (variant). I didn't tell my partners that I wasn't going for submissions and just positioning out, which I don't know if it was a good idea. (except for a arm/triangle choke and a kimura because it was there).

I actually felt better today than I did at the comp. Once again, I don't know if that's a good thing. But progress from day 1.

Getting more into BJJ now. Still getting used to having a jacket and being aware of different chokes. Finding sweeps are a bit easier, maybe because of the friction and grips.

My ear has been aching since class (keeps checking for cauliflower  )

Did a bit of blind grappling. (essentially close your eyes tight and roll).

Nice bit of sensitivity training and would try again.

Its a scary but good feeling when the CaCC coach says (with a slight glint in his eye)

My pre class warm up consisted of a lot of neck stretching in preparation :p

Been working on the spider guard lately, enjoying the sweeps but it's also when you realise that I have very little hip flexibility :p

I do have Spiderman rash guard but not as a Gi. :(

Been a bit quiet on here.

I've pretty much put all striking training to the wayside and focusing all on BJJ gi. (i'll pop into a muay thai class now and again to keep the skills up)

I'm still getting wrecked in every which way possible. I'm surviving simply with whatever little skill I have up. I always have my seoi-nage, my gut wrench and my suplex to fall back on when I'm in trouble. I been told my side control is quite deep and difficult to get out of and other compliments say that my guard has improved.
My other strength apparently is just the forward momentum I naturally have when I'm rolling. Certain higher belts tell me it's a good constant pressure, I give. But it doesn't stop them from tapping me out every 30s :p

I honestly don't know if I'm getting better. I measure myself from how long I'm lasting against my team mates, if I'm lasting a second longer, or even half a second longer and progress that every day, that's a win for me.

    Nice work :)
I found it hard to gauge my progress - as you get better at the ground game, then your partners who previously "went easy" start to up their rolling, and even improve themselves.

So I added my name (last minute) to Kleo Grappling and I have been entered into 91kg open.

So first thing first...weight loss. I'm not "cutting" as it were. Just seriously dropped my caloric intake and increase cardio and strength training.
There were no "Masters" division, so I'm in with the pink lung, no scar tissue, still flexible, youth powered kids. So I'm going for the Rocky 6 idea of "blunt force trauma" to vanquish me competitors. :D

I have been slowly keeping an eye on my food intake etc, in the off chance of entering, so my weight isn't a real issue. However I don't have scales to measure myself by, except one in a gym. So kinda going blind. But last I measured, I was 88kg. Soooooooooooo fingers crossed
