Training to vomit

So last night I was in the gym at BJJ practice. My instructor had the A/C off entirely, and it got hotter and muggier than hell. I got there a little late and only caught the last 5 minutes of warmup. We did some control/escape drills and then rolled. I think I went 2 3 minute rounds and was about to throw up. My gag reflex was kicking in. I had to go outside and sit down before I yacked all over the place.

Why does that happen? I've heard of it happening to other people. I was wearing gi pants and a t-shirt, and everything was soaked after the first 10 minutes of class. I was probably pretty overheated because none of my sweat was evaporating, but I had had plenty to drink that day. I don't think I got dehydrated. I probably sweated out a lot of water.

Hi, Yohan.

Heat exhaustion is a milder form of heat-related illness that can develop after several days of exposure to high temperatures and inadequate or unbalanced replacement of fluids. Those most prone to heat exhaustion are elderly people, people with high blood pressure, and people working or exercising in a hot environment.

Warning signs of heat exhaustion include:
  • heavy sweating
  • paleness
  • muscle cramps
  • tiredness
  • weakness
  • dizziness
  • headache
  • nausea or vomiting
  • fainting

I got this information from the following web site: MedicineNet.com

Kind regards,

Declan

Tee hee...

When I first saw the title of this thread, Yohan, I wondered why anyone would train in order to vomit.

See?

I came up with a good way to get everyone to read my thread!

The first thing I thought when it went through my head was:

Why would anyone want to train to vomit?

I have the same problem and it happens quite regularly, its getting to the stage where its affecting my training(very embarasing too). Sometimes I have to run to the toilet and throw up about 3 times a class.

With me its caused by medication(which i cant stop taking) but i get the exact same symtoms mentioned above. It seems the meds make me feel hotter as well as a host of other side effects. It is definately putting me off exercise as feeling sick is one of the worst feelings.

If anyone has any advice on how to avoid this I would be most gratefull as my doctor hasnt been much help. He gave me some anti nausia(sp) pills which really dont work. Im planning on starting Judo soon and dont want to embarrass myself infront of a new class.

How much water do you drink?

What do you wear to class?

I wear a lightwieght Dobohk(gi) with nothing underneath exept my underwear, i will drink about two pints of water in the afternoon and a glass or two before training. Its not just the summer weather that this happens either I get it in the winter too and our training hall is quite well air conditioned.

Maybe I should be drinking more water as I do sweat a lot more than normal.
