Silat Kuntau Tekpi vs Silat Mubai
Hello All,
I've been a lurker for a while here and finally decided to register tonight. My background is in Chinese Martial Arts, and I have developed an interest in Southeast Asian Martial Arts over the past year. In addition to the Pekiti Tirsia Kali I'm currently training in, I have an opportunity to train in Silat Kuntau Tekpi and Silat Mubai. I'm trying to decide between the two as I really don't think I can train in both and do them justice. Truth to tell, my knowledge of them both is very basic and I'm hoping some of you here have some experience with both to help me compare and contrast them. Basically, my interest lies in the fact that I'm a Catastrophe Adjustor & regularly get sent to areas that have a high possibility of violent crime due to the conditions therein. I also tend to get sent to rather nasty areas of my hometown at odd hours too. I've never had a serious occurrence, but other members of my team defintiely have had nasty encounters. So, I guess I'm wondering which of the two above systems might be more geared to sheer street survival as well as the similarities & differences between them when it comes to addressing violent combat. Thanks to any and all who can pitch in their experiences and opinions. Marcus |

I recommend attending classes in both before you come to any conclusions. Speak with the instructors, tell them your situation. Knowing something of your background and the situations you may have to encounter may have them show you parts of the system that you wouldn't have seen as a casual observer.
Which ever you choose, I'm interested in hearing afterwards what had you make your decision. Good luck. |

All silat is OK! (Hoi Amirultekpi!)
Quote:
Silat Kuntau tekpi is (also) the real thing! - and I say this as someone who does not practice Kuntau Tekpi. Just one Amirultekpi who is active on the floor and on the www has made me truly respect this school! Hoi Amirul are you busy with SEA-Games now? I have never heard of silat Mubai in Indonesia. It seems to be (please correct me if I'm wrong) a new silat made from several silat styles formed within a particular Islamic context. I saw Gayong and Merpati Putih in the free videoclip accessable through the website. The website shows a kujang draped in a kafiyeh which is a post modern image, as Pajajaran (the intelectual owner of the kujang) followed a monotheistic Hindu-Sunda religion, but the website did not seem to explain any of the origins of it's knowledge outside of the historic Islam. Don't get me wrong, I did like the effort put into the Silat Mubai site and the art even so much as to post my heartache and headache concerning Jihad and suicide bombings...a morbid theme I thought I would spare this forum, but it has been all over the Indonesian press. Please join me there if you would like to help ease my heart and head on the matters of Jihad and suicide bombing or if you have interest in these matters. Warm Salaams and deep hormat to all... Yes i am here Pak! :)
Assalamu'alaikum and peace to all,
First, i would like to welcome marcusknight to the silat circle. Second, i think all martial arts are real things Third, i agree with Crucible on his recommendations. Last, no, i'm not busy with SEA games Pak, rather been busy with travelling the entire time.Marcusknight, My recommendation for you is to go to these websites and find out for yourself the art of Silat Kuntau Tekpi, as we Malays say it 'Jangan perigi mencari timba' or don't let the Well find the Bucket. http://www.tekpi.org/pages/1/index.htm http://www.zurimedia.com/tekpi_at_krav.htm http://balisongplayer.blogspot.com/ http://trsresearch.blogspot.com/ OR find Guro Omar Hakim's email address from those sites and let him know of your quest. He's the official representative of SIlat Kuntau Tekpi in USA. Peace

Yup.I can't say no to that. All martial arts are good only when people can apply it.

Go to classes. Watch. See where you'd be more comfortable and which teacher seems to have better skills and teaching ability.

Hi marcusknight,
I am wondering why you decided to practice Silat along with Pekiti Tirsia Kali.Did you find any weaknesses in Pekiti Tirsia Kali? From what i read it's a welll rounded weapon system with a comprehensive empty hand curriculum(Dumog and Pangamut). Thank You Viking |

Thanks for the feedback & responses. I've scoured the Silat Mubai website pretty extensively & have even ordered a few of the mini-lessons to better acquaint myself with the system.
amirul_tekpi I would like to thank you for the various links. I had found a couple of them previously, but you definitely expanded my horizons on SIlat Kuntau Tekpi. Viking--Pekiti Tirsia IS a very well-rounded system; something I've become convinced of even though I am still very much a novice in the system. My interest in Silat does not come from the perspective of remedying any perceived flaws or inadequecies in Pekiti, but rather the desire to train in something that would give me some realistic empty-hands training earlier than Pekiti (Pekiti has some great empty-hands work, but it is generally taught later in the system). I have had the pleasure of conversing with Omar Hakim, the chief representative of Silat Kuntau Tekpi in North America, and he has assured me that his Silat style works well with Pekiti. He certainly should know as he is an old-time Pekiti teacher himself. By the same token, I've researched Sialt Mubai about as far as I can right now, and it seems to meld VERY well with Pekiti IMHO. Consultation with a few practitioners who have trained in both seems to bear this out. On an interesting side-note, Ustaz Hussein (the main teacher of Silat Mubai) has a pretty strong Pekiti background from his time in Montreal froma what I'm told. Something else that might be noteworthy is that Leo Gaje (the Grand Tuhon of Pekiti Tirsia Kali) has mentioned in previous writings that Pekiti empty-hands training bears a strong resemblance to some Silat styles. I'm intrigued by the prospect of combining the Pekiti and Silat into a seamless, practical personal system for my needs. Then again, I'm also working on how to overlay some World War II Combatives mindset and techniques into my overall mix as well. Gain, thanks for all the comments. I appreciate any further commentaries on my initial question or dialogue on anything I just wrote. I enjoy these discussions. |

very interesting friends; from where i'm coming at, regardless of what style (or art, for that matter...), its still the practitioner who'd end up melding everything learned, and being able to capture the essences of his knowledge (or art) into the creation of one's own 'flavor', making it practical to suit his need/s... this is true Silat, as well as a true combat approach.
for me, once a practitioner undrstand's the nuances of movement, whether for offense/defense, that will be the time when he moves w/ one mind, one body- very essential during combat. thus, everything becomes 'natural'. its not gona be silat mubai or silat whatever, its gona be the person's own 'dance' now, as per his/her execution of a movement... |
