Silat - Talio Silat

Hello all,

I'm new here and was glad to find a Silat forum with knowledgable members. Well, my question is this: I live on Long Island, NY and wish to study Silat. The person who is about 10 minutes from me is a man named Roberto Torres of Talio Silat. Does anyone know of his background, and more importantly, has he learned, and does he teach authentic Silat?

I've studied for over 10 years, with my main art being Wing Chun with crosstraining in JKD and BJJ. Will Silat assist in enhancing my close quarter skills? Thanks all!

Hello Mr. Gordo,
All I can say is that you're lucky to have Mr. Torres so close to you. He's a well respected and very talented instructor. I don't know him personally, but I've seen his videos (which are very good), and have heard nothing but good things about him.
I think learning Silat with Mr. Torres will positively add to your training, and enhance your close quarter skills.

Mr Gordo,

As a previous Wing Chun practitioner I have no doubt in recommending Indonesian Pencak Silat as a great art to study. I have seen Mr. Torres' videos. His style of Silat is somewhat diiferent from the art that I practise. *Commercial advertising removed.*

What I will say to you is that Mr Torres should teach you the correct Langkah, the animal systems that lead naturally from the ground to more upright postures, basic hand drills, umpe umpe which is better known as garik-garik and the pukulan strikes which collectively is all brought together through the Kembangan - breathe... then Mr Torres is doing his job. If not, then you are seriously being done an injustice and that you are missing key elements in your Silat armoury.

Best wishes,
Milamber

Where did you come about the reelcombat website? These are clips of the soon to be released Steve Benitez Silat DVD's.

I have to agree with your approach in terms of coming up from the ground etc.. culminating with the Kembangan.

Cheers
Wali
