Starting up MA again.
Well i just turned 19 on may 21st, and my dad does photography for MA schools and it has really started to peak my interest in it againl. I have tried alot of them and never really stuck with any.(got bored blah blah.) I have tried Shotokan(sp) hapkido and american karate.(haha that was a joke.) Now, i am interested in something that is usefull in the real world. I am interested in Kung fu, TKD, and kick boxing. I know a really really good TKD instructor in houston(Jason Cho) and i was thinking about going into that. Now i play tekken alot and i love hworang and his teqs and that nonsense and would be really interested in being able to use that in real life. How usefull would TKD be. Im sure and MA is useful if your good enough but for an average person. Im 6'1 and 145lbs(very skinny and lanky damnit) and am looking to put on weight and muscle as well. TKD seems to be the way to go but i always hear about kids getting there butts kicked that take these classes and well i wouldnt wanna go all out with this and get whipped b/c its not good. I know its a kicking art and thats kinda what bothered me. Olypmic TKD uses hands as well but that doesnt seem as enticing(sp). Ok im just going on now so any help would be appreciated. I suppose that i could always weight train on my own but they offer it in this TKD class as well as almost everyday adult classes. If you would like to see a video of jason cho go to http://www.chos-tkd.com/106_0667.AVI Its a jump kick. I hope you guys can give me some advice b/c im really interested and if anyone knows any other good houston schools then please by all means pm me. Thanx a bunch.
Rob Also one more thing, im really not interested in KATAs or forms or anything like that b/c they are useless. I would like to learn how to use bows that but again not in a KATA but in real life. Pool hall comes to mind. thanx again Last edited by Spike!; 26-May-2004 at 08:13 AM. Reason: forgot something |

Hi there,
I have my first TKD lesson today, and from speaking to TKD instructers on this forum i`ve learnt that TKD is alot more than just kicking. I also suffer from the slight gangley limbs being 16 years old and 6ft1, I`ve been told long limbs can come into an advantage (they did with me and kickboxing). i`ve also learnt from reading martial art books that Kata`s are in no way pointless, they they teach self control and such. The part about wanting to fight like a guy from tekken is maybe a bit far fetched as of now as you could injure yourself trying there moves. If you say you can get taught by a very good TKD teacher then dont miss such a great oppertunity to learn from him. so i`d say go for intoduction lessons in all the dojo`s you can and decide from there which one appeals the most. Good Luck -Sean

Just from reading your post above I can honestly say that formal, traditional martial art training is not for you... nor are you for it.
Take some time to find exactly what you are looking for by reading up on the various martial arts that are available in your area. Do you really know what Tae Kwon do is or is it that you are "assuming"?? Take some time to really know what you want out of training in martial arts and what you are willing to put into it. |

Im not basing the whole art on it and im sure there are great fighters out there in tkd. In fact im positive, i guess thats just what most people think for some reason. im all about starting up TKD and i hope that in 3 or 4 yrs ill be a black belt and do tournies and stuff. heres hoping.

Good Luck, but I have just started TKD and the black belts there have made it very clear there is more to it than the physical aspect. I guess its also a state of mind, and I think wanting to be the best isnt the state of mind they had.

Muay thai or kickboxing imo. No patterns or katas and you get to hit hard. I may be switching over to muay thai soon as I find out if it is ok for my blood disease (genetic) won't get me hurt. I am considering this becuase I don't like patterns and sparring kids/women/fat ppl and want to spar at full contact.

OOOOK I read the first post on this thread and kinda glazed over a few responses. I as a long time Martial artist love the fact that your interest is being peaked. That is good. But... I am afraid you may have a jaded, overly romantic idea of what martial arts are. A few things concern me regarding what you think is and is not practical and useful. When it comes to a "street effective" style TKD is not one that comes to mind quickly. I know personaly some great TKD guys who are good fighters and it is true that one should not judge an entire style based on a couple of bad schools, but when there are so many accounts of sub par TKD schools you really are taking a gamble going in that direction. I am not saying not to, just be very very careful. Secondly, you have this idea of using techniques you saw in a video game. Two places you should not use for a basis of a good technique:
1. Movies 2. Video games You may be able to "do" some of the teqs on a game or in a movie but you will likely NEVER "use" them in the real world, you will get hurt. either from yourself or the guy fighting you. Another thing you might consider. Just because you cannot immediately see the benefits of something; does not mean they do not exsist. Forms and Katas are a great TRAINING tool. Obviousely if you were attacked and/or mugged you would not do "kata #4" on them. A kata is designed to get you accustomed to shifting movements and combining certain strikes and kicks together in one fluid motion. It is a TRAINING tool and a good one. You really should gain some real martial art eperiance before assuming things about styles and katas. What you are doing here is good. Fact finding will help you on your journey. Good luck Last edited by ninja06; 28-May-2004 at 12:53 AM. |

I appreciate all the advice but i think peopel are misunderstanding me. Seeing the game/movies only spark my interest b/c it looks cool and flashy but thats not why i wanna do it. I have always been interested in MA and stuck with hapkido the longest. I am interested in being good and effective in a street fight and i know TKD probably isnt the best thing for that but i would like to be good enough that it is. I mostly am going to take it b/c i enjoy the kicks and tournies. After i achieve my BB i will most likely either go Muy Thai or some other form of kick boxing. Im out of shape and lanky so i wanan do something that can build muscle give me good form and allow for power. TKD is fun so thats the main reason i am going to take it and i also know an excellent teacher(holds the record in las vegas btw, at the start of the match did a sidekick and broke 3 of the guys ribs.) It is the best choice for me at the time and besides that i dont know of any kickboxing academies that are good where i live so that is another factor.
As for the KATAs i never saw the need for them but i apologize for my remarks and i do understand what they are for now. Rob |

They put others before themselfes, they have a modist attitude and they are very friendly, but then again, they are all friendly! Except for a lil kid who is green belt who punched my groin on my first time sparring. Lesson learnt: Punch children before they punch you -Sean P.S Good luck, it appears we beging training at almost the same time , i began my TKD training last week, but I did kick boxing before, so maybe when you get black belt we can have a spar and see if your the best
