For those interested in doing something to help those affected by the recent earthquake/tsunami: Many private organizations and charities are already mobilizing aid to the affected areas. One of these is called World Vision, a charitable group I can personally vouch for. They work in many developing nations, in partnership with in-country agencies and relief groups, for economic, agricultural, educational, and health/hygiene development. Because they are already established in most of the nations affected by the recent disaster, they can get relief to the areas very rapidly through their existing aid networks. You may read more about World Vision at their website (www.worldvision.org) US MAP Members may purchase a "Survival Kit" delivered to the affected area, to provide blankets, tarps, water purification tablets, cooking supplies, medicines (as needed), and food for a family of four (US $100), at their emergency donation site at http://donate.wvus.org/ Select "Energency Aid" from the links listed at the top of the page. You may also donate online to the International Red Cross/Red Crescent. In the US, you can donate online at https://www.redcross.org/donate/donation-form.asp. Select the option "International Response Fund" in the drop-down menu on the right-hand side of the page. Please do something: Give, pray, encourage others to give. If you know of responsible, reliable charitable groups that can accept donations in other areas of the world, please post those links as well.
CNN has just posted a list of 28 different international aid associations where people can donate to help flood/quake survivors. The link is here: http://www.cnn.com/2004/WORLD/asiapcf/12/27/quake.aidsites/index.html As of this morning, the death toll has topped 44,000 people. It is expected to rise as more remote areas are reached. It could top 60,000 if famine and disease spread faster than the international aid can reach affected areas.
I'm looking for places to volunteer in Melbourne, Australia. Could anyone post something if they know of somewhere to go - to pack food parcels, sort donations, etc... I'm not that rich at the moment so I think the best support I could give is my time.
Now theres a thought.......maybe a paypal account that we could donate into as a collective...then whatever raised sent on as 1 amount??
Id think quite a few people here would give to it......a lot of us buy things online with paypal already, and if enough of us give it could be a very worthwhile amount
This is something worth backing my employers have put 100,000 to the cause but anything anyone can give would help

There has been some difficulty with our donation via Worldvision because we're in the UK - so we've cancelled that and made a donation via http://www.dec.org.uk instead - and while we're at it we've upped it from $100 to £100 (about $160 US)....
Rather than setting up a new Paypal account, we have decided to make the MAP paypal account available for anyone wishing to donate. All donations to the MAP paypal account over the next two weeks (until Friday 14th January) will be put towards this appeal. Please give generously. http://www.martialartsplanet.com/support.htm
