So I finally got to see the episode tonight, and I'm wondering what all the fuss is about. Bujinkan detractors are crowing about Bujinkan "losses", yet neither Bill nor Jason scored any points until after they would already have been dead several times over in shinken shobu.

As for Doug going hand-to-hand with Jason, it really looked like a situation of "Okay, let's give the guy a chance in a realm where he has more familiarity". Doug ends up getting swept. However, he escapes quite handily once on the ground, moving continually away from the cut of his own sword grabbed by Jason (good move on Jason's part, BTW) while escaping. Again, if it were shinken shobu he would have been just fine: Might have gotten a superficial cut, but nothing that would have even slowed him down -- let alone been decisive.

I feel perfectly fine with what was shown on the episode.

In response to my point on the fact that it does not matter how much of a postmortum on this episode you carry out, on what could have been, may have been, or what you believe happened. the fact is that an 13th dan or something got thrown by a MMA guy.

Now don't get me wrong it can happen to the best of us.

    But althaurs post was

This is a bizarre way of saying "well the Bujinkan guy was better with weapons and cleaved Mr Chambers before it got to the H2H part of the fight"

    Hmmm

OK lets put this in perspective. One of the things I love is Bojutsu, in fact i used to practice it as a young boy before I even got into martial arts, and I dare say given a bo I could probably knock most martial artists in my town around a little bit.

But does this make me a better martial artist? NO

And is this an excuse someone can use to say that the Bujinkan guy won the first round but failed in the H2H? NO

Firstly as i say if one has expertise in a weapon it does not make you a better martial artist. If it did I could get a gun and be the best martial artist in my town.

The problem is that Bujinkan specialises in taijutsu i.e H2H so one would have thought that the Ubber dan should have been able to do some kind of counter.

So in my opinion there is no excuse.

Except to say in defence of this Bujinkan chap. We all have our bad days, theres always people out there better than us, and you can bet your life that when the cameras are rolling theres always something going to go wrong.

garth is correct .... there really was NO excuse for that.

There is SO MUCH unarmed material in the Bujinkan that it's a joke to even contemplate claiming that it does not specialize in H2H ..... The Tenchijin is FULL of unarmed ...... also, what about all the jujutsu schools like Takagi Yoshin and Shinden Fudo Ryu????

Not to mention Gyokko Ryu and Koto Ryu ..... all unarmed styles. And Kihon happo and sanshin .... also all unarmed neh?

It's really shameful that a megadan did so poorly when it came to unarmed .... everyone keeps going on about how "taijutsu is the root of everything" and how "fighting with weapons uses the same taijutsu as fighting unarmed" ..... I don't believe it any more.

And for those who still cling to the excuse that BBT is T3H W34PONS BASED ART ....... explain why Bruce wasn't able to EASILY defeat Bill?

If it really is T3H W34PONS BASED, both megadans should have run absolute rings around their opponents each and every time ..... the contest should not have even been close ........... all the hype about "distance" and "timing" .... that should have translated into an ENORMOUS advantage over Bill and Jason ..... but it didn't .

And what the hell was that two sword ... nito ... stuff that the first megadan was trying to pull??? Maybe it worked for Musashi .... but that's another story.

Like I said earlier ..... I am not really surprised ..... but still very disappointed...

Some one may have said this but to my understanding many kendo people practice purely as a sport, and aren't used to the weight of a real sword. Because of this some of the techniques used in their bouts are unrealistic due to a misunderstanding of the weight of the weapon.

How that relates to where the conversation is now I don't know. :D

I'm still not getting the whole deal with a 13th Dan loosing in the sword sparring to Bill Duff, can someone please explain this to me again? Did he actially loose or do I have things backwards?

Absolutely taijutsu is the base and the Bujinkan is full of it. So realy saying "we did better with the weapons though" is a cop out.

No taijutsu is the root of everything. THERE IS NOTHING WRONG WITH TAIJUTSU.

Firstly Because unfortunately these people don't understand the art,
Secondly they get complacent and feel they don't need to train only teach.
Thirdly never do any real training against unrehearsed attacks and the like.

Yes well we all know that some of the megadans have been over graded. I still find it silly that in so few year people have achieved such a ridiculously high grade.

Yes often used as a cop out excuse about the need to not to really train. i.e. I don't need to train my body because our martial art works on timing and distancing rather than spped and power.

Well I didn't see the episode so can't really comment, but i suspect its like a lot of stuff that ends up being taught or being part of the Bujinkan it appears out of no where.

Much like the Bujinkan Shihan who was teaching Yagyu Shingan Ryu a few years back which coincidentaly coincided with the release of Mr Tanemuras Jujutsu DVd with Yagyu Shingan Ryu on it.

Hmmm. I wonder if he watched that prior to the seminar or actually studied Yagyu Shingan Ryu in Japan.

My remarks are to do with the Bujinkan in general, and some of the comments made on this thread and NOT what happened in the episode.

    Please reread my comments.

I did, you responded to a quote about the episode then made comments on it. You need to re-read your post.

Until then, if you want to bash the Bujinkan please create a seperate thread.

But, please shut up until you know what is being described.

" Oh look a UFO daddy"
"There is no such thing as UFOs son"
"Tell that to the liitle green men daddy look, at least look"
" There are no little green men or UFO`s"
"Daddy, they are coming up to the car"
"No they aren`t you are imagining things there are no such things as little green men"
"But, Daddy look there they are"
    "Whatever"
    "WHOOSH!"
"Pipe down I am waiting for my Burger"

Drive thru attendant: " You talking to me"
    "No to my son"
"Who? There is no one in the car with you"

    :D

Now shut up for awhile, please.

Isn't it funny that when you critice the Bujinkan to some people that instead of coming back with a decent reply they throw their toys out the pram and start ranting and raving.

It has only to do with the fact you haven`t seen the show... Then you blah blah thats because blah blah STK is L337 sauce and blah blah blah...

    Please, I did suggest you create a seperate thread didn`t I. :D

    Have you stepped down yet?

But, since you can`t really comment on the show maybe you shouldn`t comment in this thread? ne :p

Garth, it does seem like you are using the episode, or people's versions/views of the episode, fo the show as a basis for another rant/critique of the Bujinkan.

Then you say, "Well I didn't see the episode so I can't comment'. But Garth, you're busy commenting.

But everyone is right. The weapons work could have been better, the hand to hand didn't work out to well for one of the participants, etc. Only one solution to end these pointless discussions: No Holds Barred Fight to the Death (winner can claim his stuff works).

I haven't seen the episode either but it sounds as though it could have gone a lot worse.

Should we have had Sean Askew or Simon Yeo or another cross-trainer do the h2h?

If the Bujinkan gives in and panders to the expectations of the wider martial arts community i.e loads more groundwork and sparring, and even venturing into MMA competition, what do people feel would be the pros and cons?

You would have had just as many people whining that they weren't using BJK because they cross trained. There's no pleasing some people.
