It is better to be a warrior in a garden, than a gardener in a war.

You may be wondering how it is that warriors teach the skills of violence, but talk about peace and tranquility. As strange as it may seem to some people, the two are not mutually exclusive. Think about it. The monks at the Shaolin Temple are peaceful people, but they teach the arts of self-defense.

All true warriors want peace. A life of peace is where you can pursue your goals, spend quality time with your loved ones, and live life to the fullest. But as history as proven time and time again, living a peaceful life is not always possible, so we must train in martial arts, even in times of peace.

George Washington stated that those who want peace should prepare for war, and this same train of thought has been taught for hundreds of years. While we should live in peace and love, we should also understand how to fight and defend ourselves.

Knowing how to fight is not in opposition to peace and love, but is actually a part of loving peace and our loved ones. If you love someone, you must be willing to defend them. In addition, being willing to defend someone is worthless, if you don't have the ability or training to do so.

Yes, teach your students the way of peace and love, but also teach them how to stand up against the evil in this world. Teach them to stand against those who hate peace and want to destroy our way of life, but also give them the tools to stand successfully. Bohdi Sanders

I agree that martial arts should involve training attitude for peace.
There is a balance; too much talk of peace without violent actions make your stale in fighting arts.

Too much in making intense warriors can make for skilled fighters, but they will find it harder to resolve conflict without violence if they haven't practised how.

We aren't warriors. Except the few of us on here who actually have a profession where we use our MA's for protection of others as a living. Law Enforcement Officer's, military and the like. This whole use of the term warrior distracts from the point you are making IMO.

That is only one definition of the word warrior. There is another one according to Webster's dictionary...

Definition of warrior: a person engaged in some struggle or conflict.

Yet another write up supposing to define what is a "true warrior","real martial artist",true etc, etc.

As meaningful as a "what is a neighbor?" article.

An article starting from a supposition that something,a "warrior",or a "neighbor" isn't the real deal unless they subscribe to certain behavioral and/or philosophic ideals that the writer of said article has decided defines said term.

Harald Hardrada,The Bear of Norway, had more up close and personal killing experience than anyone on this site.If you'd care to travel back to 1065 and inform him he wasn't a "true warrior" due to much of his behavior during his life -(and after all,he didn't have to attack England in 1066)-don't forget your Frankish mail and sword. But I think you'd find out who the "true warrior" was.

But as long as we're at it...

A true martial artist, showing on his web site his many credentials, ranks, HOF memberships, and also selling book$ -(which will be be $old mainly to civilian$) -on living the warrior "lifestyle" and other titles such as

Modern Bushido: Living a Life of Excellence

    The Warrior Ethos

    Warrior Wisdom

    Modern Bushido

    Martial Arts Wisdom

    WARRIOR: The Way of Warriorhood

    and of course

    The Warrior Lifestyle

would have at least one film of himself on his YouTube page doing something having to do with martial skills. Y'know, just so potential customers could see his expertise aside from his literary skills.

    Seems a given nowadays.

Well, fair enough I suppose. It is another definition.

Personally, I still think it is silly for the average person in today's society - even a MAist - to label oneself a "warrior."

The problem with that is you make getting into a jar of peanut butter worthy of being a "Warrior"

It dilutes it and renders it meaningless

It may be worth noting the context of that secondary definition:

The second definition is specifically marked as a very broad one, and would include eco-warriors. This strikes me as something of a false equivocation with the term "warrior" as defined in the context of martial prowess.

It's an affectation and it's actually borderline insulting to what it means to fight in war

Yeah, I'm an amateur fighter. Trained in a lot of martial arts. No way am I a warrior of any kind. I also sort of think to call yourself a warrior is even more cringe.

@Aaradia, it's your job to make a "like button" :D

"You can do, but you don't want to do" is different from "You can't do, so you don't want to do". We all agree that it's better "you don't want to do". The difference is whether "You can do it", or "You can't do it". IMO, you need to have nuclear weapon before you can talk about "world peace" and "new world order".

Money is not everything. But without money, you can't do anything.

Wow, there is so much wrong on that website... I especially love the example of defending the indefensible that is the comments about his supposed PhD from Clayton College (incidentally where Gillian McKeith got her own "PhD" from before she was banned from using it in the UK because it was deemed to be false advertising of her knowledge).
