Due to the success of my thread on the Ninja Punch, I would like to further explore the deadly Ninja Armlock. This technique can also be called out verbally during a fight to strike fear into the heart of the opponent.

For traditionalists, I am talking about Ura Gyaku.

I have been having a few revelations about this technique over the past couple of years and would like to see how these gel with your own insights on it (it would be nice also to see a Genbukan/Jinenkan version as I would imagine they are more consistent and should have a nice perspective.

Firstly, I have seen 2 types of Ura Gyaku (many many more variations of course) but on a basic level I see one which resembles more of a Hon Gyaku (with arm bent at elbow) and one that resembles more of a straight arm with Gyaku at the wrist.

Here is an Akban version, which I don't like because he doesn't take balance before attempting to influence the arm, and he doesn't maintain the proper ratio in height between hand and shoulder of Uke. Frankly, it wouldn't work in my eyes against a resisting opponent (though I like a lot of their other stuff).

        http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aYF_hL7ude4

This time around I'll give my perspectives first, and look forward to your take on them:

With Uke grabbing with the right hand I would:

1. Cover with my left hand, elbow tucked in.
2. Step back 45deg with left leg to shift Uke's weight onto his right leg, creating a short step from them to regain some balance -and changing their height so that their shoulders lower as their body extends.
3. Wrap my right hand over their right hand, using the elbow both as a guard and a strike if they have adjusted and are in range.
4. Turning with the body twisting their right hand (only once it is above the height of their shoulder). Creating a locking motion by a combination of clockwise twist and forward pressure to push the arm into the shoulder and roll the shoulder over. Making use of my left forearm against their right forearm to help the motion if resisting.
5. Finish by stepping back with right leg.

The biggest thing I learnt in terms of making it work on people was the hand shoulder height - if it isn't above you cannot control the posture very easily and they tend to walk around out of it.

I learnt this outside of Japan from experimentation... so it may be wrong so I would be happy to hear from someone like PR and also other folk who have played around with this.

A very simple and very rarely used thing. Assuming no weapons are used of course (holding a person who has a knife in this manner would be very stupid). But, if it's just a bar fight or a school fight or something, this is really a very simple way to end it controllably.

Since it is originally a gi choke, it is very simple to be done if you wear a jacket, a hoodie or something like that, with long sleeves. What your opponent wear is irrelevant. It can also be done no-gi, but that requires some practice, while the gi version is so simple it can be done after seeing it done once.

Can be done standing (while in clinch) or rolling on the floor or anywhere in between.

What you do is basically hug your opponents neck with one hand as tight as you can, use this same hand to grab your other hand's sleeve, and put that (sleeve) hand on your opponents throat (clench the fist).

Here is a video of how it's done in the context of gi grappling, but the same can be done on the floor, standing, sitting, pushing him to the wall or as you please, as long as you have sleeves:

Try it on anyone yourself, and you'll see, that even the slightest push chokes the guy. If you use full power you can probably crush his throat.

Unlike many other chokes and hold from grappling that require elaborate setup or leave you unprotected from strikes (which makes them unusable in a fight), this can be done in a blink and

a)You can raise your shoulders and elbows so that he can't strike your head while doing it. So his hands are limited to your body, and that's not going to save him unless he's Bas Rutten, and even then it's pretty hard to do a decent liver shot while being held like that

b)He can hit you with knees, but so can you. This can be used not unlike the Thai clinch to control your opponent while kneeing him. This is what they taught us at the army, and that's what i used two times in a fight (worked as a club bouncer to pay for college). That really blasts the hell out of people. Get the choke, choke a little so their reflex is to grab your hands (which doesn't help at all), and the last thing they think about are your knees, then deliver the knees, choke more, knee more et cetera as long as needed. That's if you don't want to do serious harm to they guy (you can break his throat pretty easily if you want to).

c)This choke can't be broken as a "grab the throat with your hands" can be, because once your fist is inside, if he tries to move your hands, he only chokes himself more. Grabbing your hands and pushing away won't help either because you choke by leverage, not by applying force directly.

Just try it very lightly with a partner, and you'll see how great the choking effect is, and how much control it gives you over the opponent.

Depending on how deep your fist is it can be wind choke or a blood choke, or both if you apply forearm to the throat and the fist to the arthery.

I've only actually witnessed one fight involving martial arts. That was back in high school. My boyfriend at the time, who was on the wrestling team, had a fight after school with some kid who claimed to be a black belt in Tae Kwan Do. I tried to talk him out of it but Shawn said he was going to kick this guys ass and that was that. you have to know him to understand that tough guy mentality of his.
Anyway they met after school at a spot where kids go to fight, i was nervous, hoping he didn't get hurt and didn't really want to watch but forced myself.
turns out there was nothing to worry about. The TKD kid tried to kick him, Shawn caught his kick and took him down and got him in some kind of hold. The black belt couldn't do a banana trifle cause he didn't know how to grapple. Finally he said i give up and Shawn let him up.
Moral to this story? Hmmm i guess its if you try to kick someone with fast hands and reflexes, a trained wrestler, good luck with that.

I'm not really new to the forum but I'm new to posting on it. I remeber getting an invite to be a member when this place opened, I think I may have joined too but I don't remember my log in name or anything hell I think I checked the Forum two or three times then didn't come back.

Anyway my name is James Fitzgerald, I have been into Japanese martial arts for 22 years now. I have done a lot of different arts but I always come back to Judo and Jujutsu. The last 13 yrs I have been interested in Aikijujutsu. I have a Nidan and Menkyo Chudan in Senso Ryu Aikijutsu. Its a compsite martial art, formed from various systems (Yoshinkan Aikido, American Kempo, and Jujutsu). I own my own Dojo (The Jumonkan) and have recently had some good fortune to have a building and money donated to the Dojo. :hat:

I currently teach Senso Ryu and have began the process of becoming a Hakuho Ryu Aikibudo (branch system of Daito Ryu Aikijujutsu) study group for Indianapolis, Indiana. My instructor is Rod Uhler Shihan. Lets see what else about me.......I love ford mustangs. I have owned four, I currently have a 1990 GT H.O. 302 25 year edition convertable mustang I'm restoring. I'm 32, have one kid and I'm divorced. Um... I think thats about it .
Would knee pads help with taking a bit of pressure off the joints? If so, which knee pads would you recommend?

Sometimes, my students just don’t get the subtlety of the forms. They run through the motions, but both sides don’t “listen” or “feel” the other side’s body movements and rhythm. One of my senior students is a lot blunter about correcting their mistakes than I am. I try to talk my students through their errors. My senior sometimes won’t budge if the technique doesn’t work, and since he’s north of 250 pounds, it’s pretty darned hard to move him if he doesn’t want to go, and if he’s still in balance.

-------------------------

I sighed. Well, guys, back to the basic kata. See, basics are important. You have got to have your stances, grips, body movement nailed.

Describing this incident, I don’t mean to embarrass my students. I want to illustrate that the goals of kata training is to reach a level of competency and speed that mimics actual combative situations. The basic forms teach the foundations. If you don’t master the foundations, then doing the advanced forms is not going to make you any better. You’re just going to be doing them as badly as your crappy basic forms.

And again, in order to reach that level, a junior student needs to work with not just people at his level, but with seniors who can push him to reach a higher level of competency. There needs to be a constant upping of the ante until you reach a high level of technical ability. Being satisfied with mediocrity is not an option.

In the teaching of a kata, you will see in aikido dojo the oft-used training regime of show-and-do. A sensei will demonstrate the technique. You see his form and try to imprint how he does it into your psyche, then you pair off and try to do what he showed.

There’s nothing wrong with this system. You need to see the best example of a form before you can execute it yourself. How does the importance of being a good uke fit into this?

As teachers of educational pedagogy will tell you, this is actually a pretty complex operation, fraught with possible dangers. For one thing, some aikido dojo (and I’m only using aikido as an example because it’s the first that came to my mind…I can just as well use a karate school, or a koryu school) will take the “show” part to great lengths, but not any “explain” part.

So you see it happening, but in some dojo, a junior may have no idea conceptually what’s going on. That, educators would say, doesn’t address learners who learn by logical, mental processing, and so this only works well with students who are kinetic learners. These students are the ones who can watch a movement, internalize it and repeat it with their bodies without having to consciously think about it too much. All of us are spread out across a wide spectrum between being kinetic and mental learners.

-----------------------

This may seem to be a bit of a digression, but the important thing is, in the typical “show and do” kata training, the teacher demonstrating has the advantage of usually demonstrating with a high-ranking student, who knows how to be uke. So the form looks good. It’s not because “uke” fakes it. Far from it. It’s that a good uke knows the meaning of the kata, can play the right role, and is able to elicit the proper defensive response to the proper attack.

When a junior tries to repeat the performance, he/she is at a disadvantage, therefore, because he not only is trying to figure out how his own body has to move, he sometimes is working with an uke whose movements and attacks and responses are less than optimal for learning the kata properly. If you manage to work with a higher ranked partner, you will probably find that your technique will improve faster. Your partner will be able to point out corrections and steer you in the proper direction.

Hi all
My name's Michael, I'm 21, living in Melbourne, oz.
My latest love is BJJ, but ive also spent several years doing two kinds of Tae Kwon Do (one pretty reasonable, the other a McDojo chain), and about a year doing Muay Thai. Last year I started MMA, and enjoyed it, although it was pretty casual, and only once a week.
This year I went and tried out a couple of BJJ clubs, and discovered what I'd been missing in life. I competed earlier this year in an amateur comp, which I loved and came second in (in my weight class). I earned my first blue stripe, and I'm in it for the long term.
Cheers,
