I used to study Tae Kwon Do with Grand Master Sang Q Shim in Michigan years ago and was thinking of getting back into it. I gained a lot of weight and think that I may hurt myself if doing this, should I lose the weight before I start this again?

Initially, Martial arts helps with getting fit. You'll get stronger and more flexible. However, don't neglect the importance of diet and cardio also. Weight issues shouldn't stop you from starting martial arts.

You will get fit as you train. Just pace yourself and if something hurts don't do it. To lose weight you need to sort your diet out, as this will have a much bigger impact than doing exercise.

Welcome to MAP.
I echo the advice already given. Go to class, enjoy the feeling that training gives you, working within your limits of course, get the buzz back and hopefully the rest will slot into place.
