D o you consider Jackie chan a sellout? Do his movies seem to have less and less and less to do with martial arts and more with western action/comedy? ( shanghai knights, rush hour, the tuxedo). do you prefer his old martial art movies? How do you feel?

No.
As I said on another thread, "People don't spend $7.50 for a Martial Arts lesson, they spend $7.50 to be entertained", and that's what he does: entertain. In my opinion, he has never sold out to anyone or anything.
And come on...that "Singing in the rain" sequence in Shanghai Knights was totally awesome.

i think jackie himself doesnt want to do serious martial movies. he said it himself he is into the lighter side his older ones are more serious but he chose a different path . he still keeps the nice stunts though.
his old ones are better for moves but i still like his new ones. they are very different just look at snake in eagles shadow and then rumble in the bronx.

I think he fills a niche that was needed in MA's. My kids love him.

Jackie has said that he would like to do a thriller of drama where he can really act, but no one ever asks him.
Jackie dosen't really have that much control over his hollywood films, compared to his HK films, and i think holywood film makers really don't get the martial arts genre, so i prefer it that they dont get involved.
I think his best western film so far are the Shanghai films, but i do prefer his HK produced films.

I like some of each. Who am I? was good, so was Rumble in the Bronx, The two Drunken Master movies (nothing to do with eachother), and some others I forgot. They're not entirely serious, which is what I like about them. Movies without comedy relief are just boring.

Jackie Chan does love martial arts and loves encorporating that into his movies. He also has an incredible knowledge of what is visually appealing so instead of doing what he actually would do in a fight he does the same move but adds a little flare. Like instead of just picking up a broom and smacking someone with it he twirls it around all over the place and makes it look good on camera.
And no, I don't think he's a sell out. I think he does what he does in his movies because he wants to, and to make it fun for us. I like that.

A sell out....NO, though he's a martial artist he's also an actor.....an entertainer, a performer....that's all he's doing. SO no he's not a sell out....just doing his job

I love watching Jackie Chan movies. It's amazing and funny watching this man risking his butt in all of his movies, and uses everyday items as weapons. I don't like some of his acting especially in "Who am I?" but I don't watch his movie for his acting, it's all in the plot, the action, and being amuzed. I don't think he's a sell out, I think he's brillant man in improvising what is around him.

martial arts movies suck anyway. mildly entertaining, but i'd much rather watch something that will make me; a) think b) laugh c)dance merrily about. jackie chan excels at one of these things.

Jackie's career at this point is kind of strapped between hollywood, hong kong, and international productions. The Rush Hour and Shanghai movies are great. They are some of his best work in america even though they lack the action. They make up for it with comedy.

Best JC fight: The fan fight from Young Master.
I also like Sammo Hung, and Wei Pei fighting style, which they also learnt from the Peiking Opera school.

No....
I look at it as he is a martial artist.....PERIOD.......
and he is an actor/entertainer.......PERIOD........
He is both, and there fore he is not a sell out to either, because he finds wonderful ways to incorporate them both into his movie

It just what he loves to do, he loves to entertain. I can relate, one of my main reasons for MA is cause I like to do things that look cool and entertain. That is also why I am into break dancing. He decides to do it through his acting.
Fav. JC Movie: Drunken Master 2 (JAP version of Legend of the Drunken Master, but with alot of extra footage.)

are there any MA sellouts?
Overmind1984

I wouldn't say so. MA is what you make of it. If they are a true martial artist, then they put the work into it. They deserve to use it how ever they see fit. It may not make other people happy, but nothing ever makes everyone happy.

so short fuse....what do you think concerning this matter??

i think jackie chan has found his thing but it happens to be more than one. i prefer the old movies but his new ones are cool too. i just dont like it when MA is used as just another thing the protagonis can do
"U will never deactivte the nuclear missle, defeat your clone in super slow motion with your shirt off, and save the ironicly attractive damsel in time"
"but i kno karate!"
"so do i!"
"apparantly we are both well trained for the fighting that we made up to impress the genral population. now lets do battle"
"hold on let me get my ninja army"
but basiclly i dont lyk movies that attract Mcstudents. Not movies that dont fit MA in thier plot, but make it look stupid.
fortunately Mr. Chan has avioded that quite nicely. andi hope he continues to fit MA into his movies without making it look bad. it was jusst a topic tha came up one day an i wanted to c how anyone else thought about it

in my opinion his early movies are much better than his new movies. His new movies seem corny and less stunning. they are hurting his reputation, but thats just my opinion.

His new movies have tried to transfer the chinese humour over to hollywood. in some ways it's as good but in others i think it loses out. Grudgingly i admit the production in the new one is better.

I love his new movies. just for different reasons. I enjoyed his fighting in the old ones, but enjoy the comedy of the new ones. He still does some great stunts

We must also remember that Jackie Chan is a movie maker. He is not strickly martial arts guy. Martial Arts is his medium for a good movie. Is his hollywood movies a sellout? I don't want to think it is so. He's the best Asia has come up since Bruce Lee for crying out loud!
Here's a pic with Jackie, Owen Wilson, and Fann Wong, I became a big fan of fann wong after seeing the Shanghai Knights Movie.:D

Yes it was!
He's no sell out. Maybe he's not doing the old stuff because his body can't take the abuse anymore, or maybe because Hollywood won't go in that direction. Whatever the reason, I like the old and the new both.

I know the bosses of Jackies US films have to take every stunt through insurers first. In Hong Kong, the JC Stunt Team are blacklisted from all insurers.
One thing i hate with MA film is the whole Hip Hop themes. Romeo Must Die and Exit Wounds were entertaining but genrally i dont like the ldea.
