Just wondering what distance everyone trains to fight at, I'm not asking for 'we fight at all ranges' here, everyone does that. I want to know what distance you mainly train for, and how far away or close to your opponent you need to be for your techniques to be at their most effective.

All, depends on circumstances and the individual involved.

I prefer to fight from the top of a building, with a plentiful supply of bricks to drop on my opponent.
I used to train at kicking range, but when I eventually realised how silly that was, I try to work out strategies for all ranges. These days I'm comfiest when I am close to a person, though as Andrew Green says......it's situational.

When it comes to physical (ie. hands on) techniques I train for fairly close range, close enough that you can reach out and grab your assailant without moving your feet or bending your body. This is the range at which most non-sporting violent encounters commence.
Start getting further away from that and you get more into the realms of sport, which I don't train for. Getting even further away and you're in fantasy-land, a distance so great between you that there is no actual need to fight, you could always turn round and run away. At this range my 'techniques' are 99% to do with body language.
Doing some Aikido recently I had to laugh at the huge distance between partners when practising knife defences. At that distance you expect me to wait (and wait and wait) for an attack to come? Bugger that, I'd turn and run like the wind.
Getting really closer and I'm still happy. When our bodies are so close they almost touch I can still strike with power, because that's what I train to do. Few untrained people (and many martial artists) cannot strike with power at that range - they simply don't train to do it.
In terms of what range are my techniques effective at, I'd say every range. But that's because I use different techniques at different ranges, as appropriate, from biting at really close range to running away at really long range.

Sorry - but it's the truth.

Which range do you prefer to fight at though?

I prefer the long range.....using push kicks to keep him away from me while scoring causally .......but the moment he manages to get close to me...BANG, and he's showered with loads of hooks, punches, eye gouges, groin shots........u know what I mean to say.

Ditto. Although my preference (well the one I train most in) is striking into grappling (when I say grappling I don't necessarily mean Judo!)

It sounds like I cop out but I do train from all ranges - I train from before a situation has turned violent and they are 10ft away to we are both on the floor having a cuddle!
You must train at all these as no matter how much training you do you can still end up arse on the floor - a danger area for many traditional striking arts.
I prefer to be at 4 ft - sort of sparing range as I feel with a little movement I can disenguage or close for grappling - also my strikes are more effective.
It also helps to train with weapons and you also being unarmed againt an armed opponent - makes you more aware to 100% new ranges.
Take strikers to the floor and grapplers keep on your feet with. Good rule of thumb!
Most say they train at all ranges - lots train at these standing up -its different when you are on the floor! Also multiple attackers with changing ranges - this alters your techniques available!
Another thought!

Where are we doing this? And with whom?
In my younger days when I thought stupid. I would launch into it as fast and hard as possible and as close as possible.(especially with my older much larger and stronger brother).
As I 've gotten older, in the dojang- leg distance in side stance. In the street, as far away as possible because people have a tendency to carry weapons now adays more often. I want to be able to duck, run or cover. That's to do age... younger people have other ideas.

Ideal conditions, ideal opponent. Whatever distance you'd prefer to fight in is what I'm interested in.
