YODA

Hi all

I will shortly be teaching a one day seminar in Edinburgh in aid of the "Martial Artists Against Cancer" Charity.

The seminar is kindly being hosted by several members of MAP - good show guys :D

Date: Sunday 3rd November 2002
Venue: Heriot Watt University, Edinburgh
Times: 12:15 till 16:15
Cost: £10 per person - all profits are going to the charity
Topic: Doce Pares Eskrima

I'll be away on a training camp (and teaching 2 seminars) all next week - so contact Freeform or Andy Murray for more info. I'll be checking in a few times during the week from a Cyber Cafe though - just to see what the interest level is.

Hoping to meet lots of fellow MAPers there :D

Needless to say, I'm definitely going.

Who else?

Freeform

I'll obviously be there!

If anyone wants more info, PM my good self or Andy, or just leave a post here and we'll answer it ASAP.

'E'something Jimmy. The plan is that we'll (Freeform'll) post a map of how to get there on site somehow.

I've been up to Edinburgh before, that's why I'm worried. Well, at least I'll only have to leave at six in the morning to get there on time. :p

Andy Murray

I bet some people might wanna cadge a lift off you if you're heading up here Jimmy. The more the merrier!

Hmmm...you got someone in mind Andy?

LilBunnyRabbit
18-Oct-2002, 03:05 PM
I only offer lifts on two conditions: 1) since I'm going anyway I won't ask for petrol, but you get to pay for caffeine and sugary stuff, 2) you don't comment on the mess in my car, I've not had a chance to clean it yet.

:p

Melanie
18-Oct-2002, 03:08 PM
You've got 2 weeks to clean it Jimmy!

ahem...

LilBunnyRabbit
18-Oct-2002, 03:14 PM
Well, I guess I'll be able to get half of it done in that time...I know, I'll clear out the boot, you can go in there. :D

Melanie
18-Oct-2002, 03:16 PM
Harumph!

I'll think about it in that case...as you're going to all the trouble of cleaning it...

LilBunnyRabbit
18-Oct-2002, 03:20 PM
Or I guess you could use the passenger seat, seeing as you've got such short stubby legs and don't need to use the foot well.

Hope this helps a bit. If anyone wants to come up the night before their welcome to crash at mine if they bring a sleeping bag. I've got 2 futon beds, a fold out couch, a couch, lots of floorspace and we can always send my flatmate off to his girlfriends and use his bed as well! (Only joking Ben, no, put the SA 80 down.... good boy ;) )

As long as no one complains about the giant hole in the wall where the fireplace used to be.

I'll be running my usual Aikido class for the hour before. Everyone's welcome to join in if they make it to Edinburgh early enough, although it could be quite cramped in terms of mat space.
There should also be a karate class for the hour after, but I don't know if they are willing to allow anyone else to train. They should be, but I'll have to talk to them first. (More likely freeform will do this though, as he trains with them)

Looking forward to meeting you all soon.:)

Actually Tintin its all already been sorted, i was just waiting until I got exact confirmation of times until I told everyone.

The Karate session will be a 1hr session of bagwork and sparring (Wado style), and is open to anyone who wants to stay on and hit something!

OK, we're aiming for a 12:15 to 16:15 slot for the FMA.

Bring sticks if you have them, but by that I don't mean something your dog brought back from the park ok!

There will be sticks there for sale though, and hopefully enough spares to go round if you're skint.

Spike has graciously offered to have his head shaved on the day, with the proceeds of the Barber being donated to 'Karate for Cancer'

Count me in on the seminar, this will be good not only for us poor helpless students but also for such a fantastic charity cause.

Can any one tell me where HWU is and what part of the building it is being held at, as this would be the first time to HWU ?.

This should be fun and I do not mind getting hurt or bruised for charity.

Liz, jump on the No. 25 from Princes Street, they run out to HWU. The sunday service runs about every 30mins on Sundays and the journey lasts about 20mins. Be warned though that this is the service that Tintin and Silver use to come out to campus!!!!!!

Hi all

Putting the final touches to my lesson plan today - if there's any aspect of Eskrima that you would particularly like to see now is a good time to say so!

Everyone will need two sticks and a wooden or blunted metal knife (no sharp edges) - the usual floppy rubber toy knives will not be suitable. A few bokken & jo/bo would be usefull too.

If you have baby soft hands then a pair of cycling or weight lifting gloves may be useful too.

Freeform
30-Oct-2002, 08:14 AM
Dave, are you bring some stix for us to purchase on the day?

How much will they set us back?

Will there be a few spare sets for the inevitably poor students who'll be in attendance?

Whats the capital of Portugal?

Colin

Hi all! Just thought that I'd put a wee note in to say that I'll be there! I'll have a chat with Freeform and see if we can put a few posters up which give directions when you hit the campus to try and make life easier.

I'll bring my weapons so that Yoda can batter me and take them off me while looking cool and groovy.

I think it would be grand if you could all make it along to the aikido for the hour before. Greyghost & I will extol the virtues of the fight against Captain Birdseye and see if we can sign up a few new recruits!

We will also be holding a class for Freeform and any others who wish to learn how to spell a little better (see page two of this thread for an example)!!

Liz, given that I have no idea what you look like I will probably end up telling you that the seat next to me is being saved for a friend of mine!! To prevent this from happening we will have to have a password. When you get on the bus and think that you have found myself and Tintin all you have to say is "I wish to pledge my life to the fight against the evil that is Captain Birdseye!!", to which I will reply, "Then join us! And together we will rid the planet of his foul presence!!". You will find a picture of myself and Tintin on the gallery page (I'm the one without a beard and who's not wearing a blackbelt).

Hopefully I'll see you all there. Have fun and enjoy life! :D

Well Dave's request for wooden Tantos has put the spanner in the works for me. I'm whittling like mad here.

Anyone who needs sticks let us know here, so we can estimate numbers required.

YODA
30-Oct-2002, 03:03 PM
Ok - lesson plan is done. Wooden knife panic over - we're not doing any :D

So much to show you & so little time - maybe we'll do knife stuff next time :D

Here's the basic outline...

Section 1: Solo Training

1. Double stick
- Warm up & basic coordination drills
- Hand changing exercises (no, you can't change yours for mine).

2. Single stick
- warm up & hand changing exercises
- Basic twirling (coordination & basic body mechanics)
- Amarra - set fighting combinations using all 6 striking areas on the weapon.
- Breaking apart the set amarra to formulate your own combos.

Section 2: Blocking & counterstriking at Medium Range

1. A brief discussion & demo of the 6 ranges within Eskrima
2. Abesedario progression - blocking & counterstriking series from the primary angles of attack. Building from blocking to single counters to multiple counters - against pre-set angles and against random attack.
3. Disarming the stick at medium range. Snakes, Vines & Strips.

Section 3: Grappling with the stick

1. Locks that follow from failed disarms
2. Takedowns that follow from failed locks
3. Full series of block, counterstrike, lock, takedown & finish from the primary angles. This will include balance breaking, armlocks, leg locks, chokes & strangles, throws etc. (Ouch time!)

Section 4: Flow drill training at long range.

1. Single stick flow drills
2. Double stick flow drills
3. Single vs double
4. Moving in and out of range withinh the drills using correct stance transition & range awareness
5. Integrating other weapons into the mix - 2 handed stick/sword, staff, spear.

- I don't have any sticks to sell at the moment. I'll bring what spares I have.

Should be a fun day :D

Hi Charity MAPers :D

I've just spent the best part of the evening scouring my house & garage for old sticks and resurrecting them with the aid of my bench grinder & copious amounts of duct tape.

I now have 15 pairs of useable sticks to lend out on Sunday. :D

I'm just about the sit down with several cans of Bud to work on the seminar hand-outs etc.

I'll be bringing a friend with me (I'm staying over in Glasgow with him on Saturday night) to act as my dummy for the day - so I won't need to inflict too much pain on the unsuspecting newbies. Graeme's used to it ;)

Freeform

Spikes house?

The uni refectory has a fairly decent quality of food substitute, unfortunately at an offensive price. The union does a breakfast from 11.00 (11.00!!!!!!!!! Christ thats the afternoon!!!!!!). Theres also numerous cafe's in town and on Sunday morning traffics negligable.

LilBunnyRabbit

Fair enough. Is carparking free on Sunday?

Andy Murray
02-Nov-2002, 01:14 PM
Hi Jimmy,

Actually a whiteboard is perfect mate. Got any whiteboard markers? Never mind we can probably nick em on campus.

Car parking should be free on campus Jimmy, so no problem there.

Glad to see you making the huge effort to come up for the event. The last two service stations before you hit Edinburgh, are Hamilton services (just before Glasgow on the M74) and Harthill services, as you approach the final straight of the M8 near Edinburgh. Speed Camera's are pretty nonexistent once you pass Glasgow, but do watch out for unmarked cars (BMW's and Volvo's usually).

Cheers, Andy M

Give us a call if you run into any difficulties.

LilBunnyRabbit
02-Nov-2002, 02:20 PM

If I don't turn up I'm probably asleep in my car in the carpark, but usually when I do something like that I'm awake in plenty of time.

I will be needing time to stretch though. :p

Sorry Guys but I cannot make it after all and I must apologise for this. My work comes first and being a zoo keeper I have lots to do and my German boss will not let me take time off. We are having an emergancy escapee animal drill and I have to be there as I am one of the senior keepers. So I am very sorry that I can not be there however, I wish you all the best and I hope you make pots of money for the charity.

Me and Spike could simulate one for you, I can be an ape, and Spike could be some skittery critter. Fluffy could be a dragon (!?!), Tintin could be a small furry animal (no real difficulty) and Silver could be something large, loud and annoying, like a Rhino.

You could try to stop us all as we try to escape the hall at 'Mat putting away time'.
