unknown philosopher

Hi folks,
I've been trying to find the name of one of Bruce Lee's favorite philosophers who was briefly mentioned last night on a televised documentary about Lee's life. One was The Buddha and the one I'm looking for was quoted as saying something to the effect of: "one must invalidate the truth in order to find it". I could not clearly hear his name but it sounded something like "Gerti" to me. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
