I have recently been told I am doing to much during the day on the days which I have Martial art training in the evening and was wondering what kind of things you should do on those days and what people do personally.

Well, I can relate to this personally today moreso than any other day of the week. Today I have both TKD and Hapkido classes back to back. Thats a tall order as we do conditioning both classes as well as practice technique.

I try to carb-load all day at work and hydrate as best I can. I have roughly 1 hour and 45 minutes from the time I get home until I have to leave to make my first class. I try to grab a 30 minute nap in there to help me replenish myself a little then I eat a small salad to keep me fueled without making me full.

Short of that, if I didn't HAVE to work on Monday's I'd do nothing all day but rest and hydrate.

On days when I have MA classes I don't do any other serious training. Part of this is because I normally do 2 classes a night, and part of it is that if I wanted to do anything else I'd have to do it before work, and I am not a morning person.

I do try to do some prehab work on training days though. At the moment I'm doing wrist and grip strengthening work and, depending on what else I'm doing that week, I may do some static holds (planche progressions, L-sits etc).

On class days, I typically save whatever I plan on doing for the day until after class. Usually then it's some kind of conditioning; I try to avoid strength training or really technical stuff after a hard class.

I have class two times a week normally but really depends on my teacher it is when ever he has time. I go to the gym monday-saturday depending on job time.

Hi All,

Currently doing the KettleWorx program during the day - although I 'cheat' a little bit by swapping the 6kg kettlebell for a 15Kg one on some exercises - aim to build some muscle as well as lose some weight.

So yesterday did KettleWorx at lunchtime and then 2.5 hours of training in the evening (2 hrs TKD and 1/2 hr sword) - today KettleWorx at Lunchtime and then teaching Karate Jutsu from 4:30 to 6:00 - each day varies but I don't worry if it's an 'exercise' day or a 'martial' day as from a self defence point of view, you can't choose what your fitness level is when Mr Mugger comes to call...

lol I'm not iv simply been told its not a good idea to keep doing what I have been the nights I have to do MA training as well.

from my training routine critique thread

my martial arts training on an average week consists of two days of Judo and 1 of MMA some times more, on the days in which im training in class in the evening
during the day I do

Pull up bar variation's
12 Pull ups
12 Mixed grip pull ups
10 Chin ups
10 behind the neck pull ups

a set of 100 for each
regular sit up
crunches
ankle grab sit ups
leg raised sit up

80 Burpee's
100 Jump Lungees
100 Lungees
25-30 Regular press ups and 1 set of press up variation's changing every day (so it goes between diamond press up, Hindu PU, roman press up, and back round again)

to much ?

Hi,

I think it depends on how you feel and how you are performing - overtraining is not a good thing but everyone has a personal optimum level - the trick is to find it :)

do you train at night or during the day ?

Muay Thai is typically 6-7, with open gym time after, so usually right after class. On Kyokushin days I tend to do less and at home since it's a 45 min drive one way for a 2 hour class.

I powerlift every day except fri/sat/sun. Usually I lift before class though, as after I'm usual tired and/or lazy.

I do power yoga twice a week, which is a form of ashtanga yoga, that cycles through the poses quickly, in a heated room. It gets your heart pumping, works strength, flexibility, and balance, all in one workout. Been doing it for over a year and am hooked. It really complements MA and my once dodgy back is now working like it should.

it depends on what you are doing and if you can justify it to yourself

Right now because of a new job, new hours and inability to go to my old powerlifting gym i have to lift before classes, so i sguat and do chin ups before one class, bench and do chin ups before another, i limit what i lift so my class doesn't suffer too much, and conditioning stuff is done AM either on the class day or after as a recovery day

Its probably not a case of doing too muchbut rather not eating enough to recovery between the sessions

looking at your scedule i would wonder why you are doing so much extra intense conditioning before judo and MMA (both heavy on conditioning anyway) by this i am refering to the burpees and the explosive lunges, do you do this workout just on the days you train or on off days as well?

Currently I'm doing Muay Thai 3-4 times per week, all evening classes. I'll usually get up early in the morning and do some road work then rest all day til class. Sometimes if I'm feeling particularly energetic ill do some high rep, full body weights exercises that work my cardio e.g. cleans, clean and press, dead-lifts, thrusters, kettle-bells etc (not all in one work out of course)
