Another thread just reminded me about those bob dummy thingies and it got me thinking how do they compare to punchbags? Obviously having a life like target is an advantage but does it make sessions completely different to just a free standing bag?

My street combatives instructor has one in his garage and it's great for teaching accurate punching because you can aim for the jaw/eyes etc just like in a real fight. Having said that they're pretty expensive but they're definitely more realistic if you can afford the outlay (considering you can pick up a decent heavy bag for £40/£50)

I like it, but it moves so much more than a regular bag. A bag you can hit and it will jump, but it won't really go anywhere. Bob tends to fall over when you hit him.

John you are hitting too hard ....too many weetabix !!!!

Bobs are good but watch out for the base when kicking ....can be pretty solid if the padding gets loose

Thats my issue with free standing bags too. Put him against a wall?

Is water not heavy enough to prevent that? Maybe you could find something denser if it's not gonna be moved around much.

I filled mine to the brim with water and he still went all over the place - despite the fact that 3 of us couldn't lift the damn base out the house to empty it when I wanted to move him!

Use sand instead

They still move. I had a Slam Man that would move around when clobbered. Even worse to empty when the need to be moved. Took hours of emptying

They have a tendancy to slide in my experience.

I dont think having the torso adds that much realism. If your practicing targeting it's probably better to just use a sparring partner that moves? I see bag work as an energy systems and power generation exercise and prefer a heavy bag for that.

A Bob's head is extremely squashy and people's heads are not. I'm not a fan, I actually think regular punch bags replicte hitting someone better overal.

My instructor has filled his with plaster...I wish he'd told me!

Have you tried the big leather bag at the gym yet? That sorts the men from the boys

Stupid question but is it flexible at all like for some minor clinch striking practice?

hmmm, not really. the head is rather flexible. not the torso really. and the way the base goes up and through the middle of the torso means its not really practical in that sense. maybe they should redesign it to have a few more practical applications! as a 'freestanding punchbag' i think its good though. i got it pretty cheap-ish 2nd hand off ebay so it was kinda worth it :)

Ive always liked these type of bags:

Vinyl Double Angled Upper Cut Body bag Filled Kick Boxing Punch bags Black 3 ft: Amazon.co.uk: Sports & Leisure

The one at my weights gym has a top section that is head shaped, its excellent for working clinch elbows on.

Yes.

Tried a few body height kicks and then went for a low kick and nearly shattered my shin! If I'd only taken the time to look at what was written on it first! Jees Louise!

My shin won't forget it for a while!

I didn't realise Russ' book was out. It got mentioned by the compere when we were at Frank Bruno's Q&A at The Cross a few weeks back.

It's not even written yet. I'm proof reading it for him.

My old boxing gym had one.
I was just bolted down. Obviously didnt move much like that.
was good fun, and i wouldn't mind one for the garden gym but it is bottom of the shopping list, under non essentials
