I've had this problem with my hips for many years, probably as far back as I remember. I thought I'd finally ask someone about it.

Every time I raise my leg to the side (such as the actions shown in the videos below), my hip clicks. It clicks at about the halfway point of the stretch. However, it doesn't affect my flexibility, and it doesn't hurt at all...but I can feel some sort of friction and jerking movement when it happens.

YouTube - Wushu - Side kick

YouTube - Leg Raises, Single : BeYourTrainer.com

Also, I can pop my hip in and out (NOT in and out of the socket), more like this:

YouTube - Double Jointed Thumb

and FYI... I can also do that with all 10 fingers. I think my joints are just deformed :( But I just wanna know, should I get my hip checked out before I continue doing high kicks and stretching? Does anyone know what exactly is happening? And I've tried adjusting my body position, nothing works. It just always clicks :(

Thanks!

I wonder if it is the same issue though...cos that doesn't explain why I can move my hip in a double jointed manner...

Thanks man...you're always know the answer....even if it means bad news for me :(

I was hoping there'd be some way to fix it...but guess it's more a matter of managing it :(

If you're not feeling any pain, and there's no inflammation, there shouldn't be any concern. But as always I'd advise you to visit your GP to be on the safe side.

I'm not a medical professional and this shouldn't be construed a diagnosis or medical advise but:

This used to happen to me until fairly recently on just one leg. It didnt hurt but it was as annoying as hell.

Upon seeing a specialist for another hip issue, he said after a few tests that my Glutes weren't really firing like they should have been and that my hammies were doing a lot of the work the glutes should have done. A few weeks of working to activate the glutes with bridges and lunges focusing on contracting the glutes and it has almost completely disappeared. It may have been a coincidence but I would have a look and try and work out if you have any muscle imbalances in your hips.

Of course you should go see a professional but if you are curious, here is what happened for me.

The test he used to determine that my glutes weren't activating was as follows, you will probably need someone to help you with this.

Lay face down on a bed, table, bench..whatever. Try and lift one leg up to the air. You or your partner needs to feel which muscles are activating and in which order when you do this. For me, my glutes hardly did a thing but my hammies fired very strongly and they fired before my glutes which is apparently not supposed to happen.

I was told this was called "Dormant Glutes" and you need to do exercises to activate them. A quick youtube search will give you plenty of different exercises for this.

Hope it helps.

I get a similar sort of thing, my hips go klonk (no pain) when doing an outward circle (outer cresent kick) a lot of my other joints have hypermobility, so I guess this could be related.

I don't do outercresent kicks or any kicks that set it off, so don't think it's going to be an issue for me.

That's very interesting...I've never heard of it before. I will do some research and see if that is the case with my problem.

I'll try this out tonight...although my boyfriend might think it's just an excuse for him to squeeze my butt! lol
