That was every night together with the same amount of crunches and a load of other stuff.
I want to get near the weight he can shift now. Free weights are my best bet as he's used to machines in school. Don't think it'll ever happen though :(

I am aiming (when my back is sorted and the garden is done) to concentrate on fitness first and strength second. Then once i'm happy with my fitness i will concentrate on my strength. Oh and maybe some MA whilst i'm at it lol. I think i may spend more time on fight training rather than syllabus tho.
How do you train to be able to perform 300+ push-ups? Is it just up-ing your number each time?

He started at 6 doing 10 then 20 etc: until 50 or 60. Once you get to the point you can easily lift your body then it's more a matter of picking a number, the jumps are then in 50's. It got to the point he had to do 1 arm ones in the dozens. He trained for about 2 hours a night sometimes more so he was very strong for his age. Still is.

Last time I checked, a few years ago, the number was 30 to 40-ish.

Now, I probably can only do 20.

Why do I feel bad all of the sudden?

simon s
13-Aug-2010, 10:59 PM
In my twenties I would regulary do 100 without a pause, now I don't do them at all.

I do a few variations sometimes during warm ups, but it is not something I practice.

I just started them again today. Rushed my workout for some reason and felt guilty so hit the push ups and PX90

I think the best way to increase the number and endurance...is to start inwards and work ur way out to wide arm. So do as many dimond push ups as possible..then readjust to normal and do as many as u can..then outer etc..all while staying in push up position.

when in top shape i could do 50+, but never tried to do more.

last time i checked (last year, iirc) it was around 30. now, dunno, since i tend to dislike endurance training.

I did 100 as a drunken contest last new-years eve. Not sure how many I could do sober today but I regularly do 30 as part of my warmup without any hassles.

Not sure as i haven't tried yet (i will now after seeing this thread) but i do 110 in 1 minute (timed) and the last time i did the 600 push ups in an hour challenge i managed 760. the most i ever did in one go without a rest was 200. but i was in the army at the time and was being beasted by a corporal. i'm stronger now tho, so will try it this week and post my result.

I recently did 10 clap push ups over a camp fire at a music festival. Alcohol makes stupid ideas fun :)

Push ups, not sure.

A year ago I could do 3x60 dips as the last exercise in a workout focusing partly on triceps. So, probably somewhere around 60 or so.

I can do 20-30 push ups with a 40lb vest on, so I guess I could do about 30-50 regular push ups. 110 is pretty impressive though.

Hmm just a thought: why the huge emphasis on push ups?
Have you ever tried a kettlebell? Its like a canonball with a handle and it comes in all kinds of weights.

Incredible allround fitness in your backyard but get hold of an qualified kettlebell instructor so you learn it right.

gorinnosho
19-Sep-2010, 09:31 AM
yes i do a kettlebell workout now at my gym to gear up for shodan. and there's a perfectly good explaination for you question. i'm dirt poor, and my thinking is why spend money i don't have on weights then i have a huge weight i can through around for free?

I used to be able to do almost 50 in 30 seconds. I have no idea what my max is.

In a normal class now, we do anywhere from 50 to a hundred pushups in sets of 10 to 25.

I love that we do pushups. I have fairly weak arms for a big dude.

I'm bored, can't sleep and remembered this thread, so just tried... got 184.

Not exactly 'fresh' though. its 1am, i worked from 6am til 1pm today (paving) then went to the gym this afternoon for my squats/deads session. i'll try again in a couple days, and i want at least 200 next time! haha

Infrazael
28-Sep-2010, 08:41 AM
Max was like 65-70 in one go, but I did several sets a day.

Now I can only do 40-45 in one go, I am focusing mostly on my conditioning, cardio, and endurance as of right now and working on core strength more than arm/leg strength.

Doing a lot of crunches, and well thousands of Thai roundhouses a day. I will go back to doing more upper body training once everything else has improved. My punching power still feels the same if not better than when I was able to do more pushups so meh....

About 80 on a good day at a stretch with no pause. it varies though, some times lower, sometimes higher, usually lower.

Used to be able to do about 70 with no pause, back when I did a lot of press ups.

Now probably about 40 as I don't do them alot.

Funny thing is I'm now in much much better fighting shape than I was back then

We usualy do;
1 push up
1 sit up
1 squat kick then
2
2
2 etc all the way to 15.. you can do the math :)
No short movements either, must be full movement or we repeat!

Pyramids, I really like these, I'm not sure about doing multiple exercises in the same pyramid though...

I've been doing to 12 and back, with proper form, about 2 seconds per pushup, 15 seconds in between "rounds" = 156 pushups.

In sets of 25-30ish regular I can do about 90 1min inbetween, then it's less for close grip/wide grip. I've used weights maybe 5 times in my life.

Pyramids of alternating exercises are great, as then you can usually end up doing more of both. My wife and I did a workout together the other day where we started at 25 push-ups and 50 crunches, then the next round was 24 push-ups and 48 crunches, and so on down to 1 push-up and 2 crunches (a reverse pyramid basically), totaling 325 push-ups and 650 crunches. With just doing push-ups, I may have only been able to manage about half that.

She did have to drop down on her knees for some but yes, my wife is a pretty tough lady. Once our son is in school she wants to take up Judo. She originally wanted to try Muay Thai but decided she would probably literally kill someone if they hit her in the face.

Well, since I no longer do push ups because I've done so many of them, looking back I would have to say the number that I could do would depend on who was making me do them and why! Maybe "making" is a little harsh...suggesting would probably be better...it would all depend on who was suggesting that I get down and do pushups of my own volition and why. There, that sounds a little better. And then after all of those "start overs-" I lost count anyways.
