While I'm currently not training in it, good Kali is alive and well in both Canada and the US. Heck within four hours are Guro Jun DeLeon in Toronto and Guro Doug Marciada here in Rochester NY. And Juramentado can vouch for both of them.

Oh yeah, Guro Jun and Guro Doug are the real deal! :D

I highly recommend either of them. If you can train under both, so much the better.

But do look around and I'm sure you will also find other great teachers in Canada and the US. :)

Where does Guro Jun DeLeon teach? Where in Toronto does he teach? and What does he teach? I know, so many questions, so little time.

'salright - I've spent years learning to handle myself ;)

I think there are probably others on here, too, but I can't think of any off the top of my head so I'll let them fend for themselves.

I went to a seminar with Guro Dan Rutano a while ago. I believe he has a school in the North of Calgary - if it wasn't such a dang long drive across the whole city for me, I'd probably train there.

We do try to do some stickwork where I train; the website is:

There are plenty of FMA teachers here. Modern Arnis, Doce Pares, Inosanto lineage, Largo Mano...

When I used to live in Toronto, Canada, I used to complain about the 45 minute drive from Scarborough to Mississauga. I live in the Metro Manila now. If I can get anywhere in 45 minutes its considered a short trip. One of my guys commutes from Novaliches to Makati, a couple of hours most days. Another one comes from Cubao some days and from Laguna other days.

Having driven through blizzards in Northern Ontario, typhoons in Bicol, and the traffic in Novaliches, Valenzuela and Quiapo, I think I just need to drive through a Sahara sandstorm to complete my bad driving days experience.

As former Torontonian who also use to lived in Metro Manila I feel your pain Diego_Vega.

I use to sometimes walk from Pasig to Quezon City to train, becasue it was much faster than sitting in traffic on the EDSA.

London, Ontario seems to be a mecca for filipino martial arts, and you're not too far, if you're interested, check them out, they run seminars regularly (I can't say I've ever taken advantage of it though):

Hey Epsilon!
There are a number of good teachers here in Southern Ontario. Definitely check out Guro Jun. Are you training up there in Aurora? I see from your profile that you do Shaolin Kempo. Is that Tim Wakefield you're training/trained with?
Cheers!

I used to commute from Quezon city to Makati, on a good(a very good!)day it took about me 30 min. My worst day it took me three hours to get to Makati. :bang:

Hey, that's also my record in terms of travel time from Quezon City to Makati. The problem was the 30 min. travel time happened during the Holy Week (Maundy Thursday) when I have to come in for work on a holiday  and the 3 hour travel time happened when there was a car accident at EDSA during the construction of the MRT. :bang:

I'm part Filipino, orginating from outside Angela. Most of my Filipino family is still over there, and I might want to return someday. I wish i could train in an FMA, but no school in the entire state of Mississippi. I currently train in old style Ryukyu Kempo, and I'm also interested in FMA, and Koryu MA

Hey I am new in this Forum, I just started learning Arnis and I love it. The "Heaven and Earth" two stick drills are awsome. I am of Cuban Heritage but my wife is Fillipino, thats how I found out about Arnis.

Anyway I am really into it and practice whenever I have a chance.

A Mi 'Mano Cuban Menace,

Welcome! Two years ago I had the opportunity to visit Cuba (Pinar del Rio, Matanzas) for a conference. Loved the culture, the food, and the music - que rico!

I'll second the recommendation of Guro Jun De Leon of Toronto. As Pat so accurately put it: "Top style, Top Master" We go out of our way to see him whenever he's in the States.

Buenas Suerte,

How does the Kali DeLeon system compare to other FMA systems? Any distinguishing features or emphasis compared to others?

We have the Fancis Fong school and affiliates, Inosanto Blend, that's about it. Good stuff but you need very deep pockets. Hoping for another alternative.

Sorry for the late response, I just saw this post.

Uhm... different? I think the main difference is that KDL is more of a training methodology rather than a collection of techniques or a particular style of movement. If you watch our senior students, they all move differently from Guro Jun and differently from each other. KDL isn't a style. Everybody is different so our movement is bound to be a different as well. Guro Jun has put together a set of drills and "live-feed" exercises designed to elicit certain responses from the student. These responses revolve around three principles: laging una, or always first, there should not be any hesitation; ticbang, or the ability to do follow up strikes on the half-beat or quarter-beat; and agos, or flow, the ability to adapt. In KDL, speed and the ability to be sudden is power. While we do use body torguing, it should not be obvious. The movements should be non-telegraphic.

KDL uses single stick, double stick, spada y daga, knife, longer edged weapons, improvised weapons and empty hands. People who've seen us demonstrate are particularly impressed by our double stick work, but again, that's just part of the training methodology to gain better balance as fma'ers and as martial artists.

Finally, in order to be really good in KDL, you really have to go to Toronto and train consistently with Guro Jun, or one of his senior students. It's the training methodology not any particular techniques, that means training regularly with Guro or one of his senior students. Finally, if you have a chance, you should give Guro a call and make an appointment to join a class. One of the things people have said about the KDL system is that all of the students are good. The methodology works. If you commit to the training, the training will work.

Thanks for you interest,

Roland Isla
