Whats Up everyone !
I am new to martial arts planet so bare with me. I just started BJJ about 3 weeks ago. I am really enjoying it. Before I started I researched several different styles, (etc. Aikido, HapKido.) I really liked what I read and heard from others about both, especially aikido but I questioned the effectivness of it in a street fight. For example, I am in a bar and some guy wants to go at it because I looked at his girl. Many told me you wont be able to apply the techniques in aikido that easily. So my question is.......Is brazilian Ju Jitsu a good martial art for a real street fight.

Any input would be greatly appreciated.

In my humble opinion yes it is very effective if you apply it right and whoever told you that Aikido wouldnt work was lying. A lot of the wrist locks that police officers use can be found in Aikido. I do agree however if they said that BJJ would be better to use then Aikido in a bar type atmosphere but as with all grappling arts there is one drawbak to using them, the potential for multiple attackers. But all in all BJJ is very good for street self defense if you apply it right.

Mostly Yes,
BJJ is of alot of use in a 'StreetFight', as long as you are not so keen to dive on the deck, that you end up resembling a roll of carpet.

Also, depends on the emphasis of a class. I used to goto one that was more sport-orientated and although I enjoyed it, I felt that it was flawed (floored :)...).

I have since been to check out a few others and have found one where the emphasis is much more on self-protection.

yeah. although in a bar type scenario like that i'd rather have good takedown skills over submissions anyday. better to slam someone into the ground and end the fight there than rolling with them, which could be very uncomfortable.

but yes, bjj is very good. and although you may get some people who will tell you it's unrealistic because of the emphasis on groundfighting, but don't worry about it too much. there seems to be a misconception that all street fights take place on broken glass surrounded by a mob of your opponent's friends.

I'd say BJJ makes about about a third to a half of a good scrappers arsenal. Combine it with some boxing or Muay Thai training and you wouldn't be going wrong ;)
