View Full Version : Bring back Materia

Final Fantasy 7 was in my opinion the best game ever made (ignoring the graphics that is!). I reckon the thing that made that game soo good was the materia system. It made it simple to customise your character and gave them some amazing abilities ("knights of the round summon" anyone?).

What i don't get is why they did not just keep the materia system. Every suuccessive FF has tried to come up with something better but they all have failed, because it was almost perfect and thats difficult to top. i think they should just bring it back for the next FFs and stop messing about with this rubbishy new stuff, anyone agree?

What they need to bring back is the Job system. Actually, they should bring back jobs and materia! That would be really cool. If they had FF8's customizeable Guardian Forces stuff, that would be the best FF game ever!

Amen Kreen_warrior, Amen to that!

IMO there are only 3 good magic/leveling systems. Job, Materia, and DnD type (one class, and you stick with it, like in FF)

All others I have seen aren't nearly as good.

FF6 was better. The whole Esper thing was way cool!

Yellow Materia is the coolest. Hook up 4xCut+Attack All+Counter to a physically strong character and you've got an unstoppable killing machine :D

I agree, I like 6 a lot more than any other. It had a much deeper story, and background on each character. Least the main one. The ff6 cg they added on PS2 was so cool tho. They can totally make another FF movie base on ff6.

Materia was good, but it was so hard to level the materia. My favorite was the gird map in final fantasy x.

We're not talking about storyline. We're talking about battle systems.

Since all FF games are unrelated story wise. Using the same leveling/skill system would make two games connect, which Square obviously didn't want. From what I know, they are making FF 7-2, which would probably use the materia system.

Last I checked, FFVII: Advent Children is a 40-minute CG Movie, not a game.

Their is a movie too, some rumors have been floating around about a sequel.

Rumor is that they're also making a FFVII-2 GAME to top it off. I think I saw it in that one magazine.. "Electronics.." Whatever, lol. I'm also pretty sure they're going to sequel every PS one FF... That would be cool if they made a sequel/movie to FFIII though.. It would be weird.. Cool.. But weird.

I also like how FFX-2 lets you start over when you beat the game with all of the job classes and the skills you learned.. Plus the items.. But not the level. But I had like 120 STR (255 Max) at level 2! (2 Kaiser Knuckles).

FF 6!! KAISER KNUCKLES, AND X ATTACK....or whatever it was...get two of one of them and you can attack six times...heh heh... i remember my sabin from that game, i attack with him once, and he keeps going, and going, and going. anyways, the ff X board was ok, i haven't played ff7 much, it was ok from the little bit i played it from. also, i agree with the ff6 fans out there, the espers were pretty kool, sometimes limits in a game can make it better...but i don't know why

FF 7 was really cool. The FMVs would freeze alot 'cause PS1s are poop (went through five and sold the 6th). :( Anyway, I was near the end of the game when I decided to rent Fighter Maker. Big mistake! Somehow it ended up erasing all my save files on the memory card. Damn Fighter Maker! That game totally sucked on top of it! Never got to see the ending. :( Oh well...

I don't really remember the ending, probably because it wasn't that good. I remember Tifa almost falling into something.. Err.. That's about it..

to be honest none of the FF endings are that memorable, it's the journey through the game thats cool

ff7 ending was with cloud and tifa almost falling in the materia, and cid flies in and saves everyone, than the asteroid comes down and is stopped by materia, or somthing...o.o eh, i didn't play it like i said, but my friend showed me the ending like four or five times.

=/ So I was almost right. Come to think of it, what Tatsumaru said applies for me. I've played through almost every Final Fantasy, but I only get into the end and then don't bother finishing off the last boss. A good example would be FFIX, where I got to the Dooms person boss thing on the last place, beat him, then haven't played since. This applies with FF2 also. :D Right now I'm working on Final Fantasy : Mystic Quest. Sure, it's 12 years old, but it's still an OK game. It's fun to go back and play old games anyways.

I liked the materia system best of anything. That shore you land on to get to Yuffie's home town was an enjoyable and good place to level materia, for me.

FF endings not memorable?!?! What the heck? FFVIII is tied with Xenosaga 1, as having my favorite ending. It tied the whole story together so well, and in an emotional way.

As for the endings of FFVII - it inspired 60 page arguments over what happened, on the FFOnline forums. Now that's got to be some kind of ending, even if I personally like a bit more closure! :)

Come to think of it, all the FF endings except two of them made me cry.... but I guess I'm more into stories (and emotional stories) than most people.

Hands Down, I love the mix and match abilities FFT introduced into the job systems. Now not only could a player satisfy the prerequisites to gain newere and better job classes, but a player can retain certain skills to create a versatile fighter.
Knight with Two Swords.
Ninja equip Armor.
And that is just scratching the surface!

Yeah, materia rocks. Though the sphere grid seemed a lot easier to use. But out of them all I liked the one from FF4 (I think). Where you start off as a magician, then turn into wizard, then finally into a mage. And it had a martial artist who turned into a master. Plus, some other cool characters.
Also, out of all the endings I only truly remember the game with the job advancments and FFX, plus half of FF7 but I really the whole story more than the ending.
