"KARATE" - Something Else : Marketing term

"term like Goju, Shotokan, Issen ryu, etc in front of" Karate : definitely a martial art.

if I tell people I do kyokushin, shotokan, isshinryu, goju ryu or something like that, they will think I'm talking about yoga. Saying I do karate will tell most people something about what you do, but will remind most people of the Karate Kid

Karate is an art made up of many arts. Kung Fu is the same, so is any other.

Karate is a mixture of westen boxing with orental 'kung fu'it contains the best of both worlds as it allows a easyer use on the street whilst incorperating the blocks and kicks
it was created origanly whenthe japanes decides to mix the to from what had been imported by traders and other travilers from afar however kung fu is also a cross breed of indian martial arts and shoulin monks meditation methords and so karate is still a martial art
im afraid im dislexic so my spelling might be a bit off

Afro, you never mentioned what planet you're from ;). Your history seems a little mixed.

Boxing surely didn't have much if anything to do with Karate because it was developed in Japanese/Chinese mixed population of Okinawa, after the Chinese brought their kung fu across the water.
The Indian connection you refer to is the story of Boddidharma who sorted out the Shaolin monks with new methods. The monks then incorporated these teachings into pre-existing Chinese arts. Many centuries before that, it's quite possible that that India gave the Chinese MA, but it's not necessarily so, to the best of my knowledge.

Karate is an art but as previously said, there are a number of different Karates-dos (Karate Ways or styles).

Rgds,
David.

Karate is an Okinawan martial art with origins in traditional Okinawan styles and Fukian White Crane Kung-Fu. Original Karate changed much when it was imported to Japan, but nowadays the knowledge of it's origins are rabidly spreading.

My style Wado Ryu is said to be a mixture of traditional Okinawan styles and a certain Ju-jutsu style that I don't remember right now.

Actually David it is reported that karate is derived from White Crane and Chinese Boxing........ just a note... but to say it is connected with "Western" boxing is wayyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy off base.....

Not picking a fight... just reciting some history..

Karate is an art. Kung Fu is an art. That web site of those kids...can't remember what it's called...yes that's an art to. Drawing is an art. Picking up girls is an art. Typing on a keyboard is art. Come to think of it...almost everything a person does can be called an art.
