This is my post from the General Discussion forum.. but I thought i should post it up here also since its karate!
These were taken on a picture camera, and from a distance, so quality isnt great. These were taken at the Kyokushin Canadian Champion ships in May 2003 in Vancouver BC. The first video is me in the red helmet and the second is of my friend from the dojo in the white. We had to wear helmets cause we were under 18 = (
No padding was used on the body, hands, or shin/feet. Bare knuckled.
My friend fighting was in the Mens heavy weight division. He was only 17 and he won. Though competition wasnt too hard haha. Though everyone is 165+ and he's only 135lb.
Enjoy!

What form of karate are you taking, just wondering?
I study TKD, I've only been at it no more than a year. I was just taught to fight with punches usually come from the waist.

Sorry, I'm stupid, and I don't know why I asked that.
Kyokushin <<
But still wondering about the way you punch, not from the waist?

Kyokushin karate teaches chambering punches at nipple height rather than waist height because it is believed that you get more power from punching that way. I agree.

Yojimbo - it depends on what branch of TKD your school is teaching. I'm learning traditional TKD. And it's w/e u think is better, like for American TKD, they bring their thighs close to their chest when they kick, in traditional TKD, u don't.
Adam - hmm, as long as you have that twist at the end, power in the punches seem to be the same, whether from the nipple or the waist. But I think from the waist, it's quicker.

Wow! That answer will really further the discussion.
We're taught to punch from chest height in Kyokushin, because as Adam noted, it produces more power, and is faster. If you're punching to the face, the fist doesn't have to be raised from the waist to punch to that level, as its nearly there. Hence its quicker.
Also, it encourages better fighting habits when translating the basic's of karate over to a fighting style. You don't hold your hand down low near your waist in a fight, so why do it in basics?
Shotokan-er's/TKDists will have different reasons and different methods, and thats fine, so long as it works. One's not correct over the other.

Ahh... I get my power from my waist/hips because i "whip" them violently creating usually a hard punch.. for my size haha.. im 6feet 135. I punch with my 2 big knuckles only as it creates the best stability and power. When we do body punches, our fists are turned over and punched at about hip height.
OH yeah, style I do is simular to Kyokushin, but is called Yoshukai.
But in that video, I was fighting in a Kyokushin tournment.

I didn't mean to say quicker from the waist, I meant to say less noticable from the waist. I think it's a more relaxed start, saves u a bit of energy and the power comes in when u twist ur fist around, like Yoshukai is talking about.

Try out both methods for a bit, see which you like best. As I said, each to his own :)
Yoshukai, were you taught to chamber at the hips? Funny. That's not standard kyokushin proceedure.

what do you mean by chamber at the hips?

Punching with your fist at your hip rather than at nipple height?

I do both.
If im punching the stomach, I have my punch coming from my waist. Though the punch is different from a punch coming from nipple height. If im punching the chest area, I come from my nipple height or whatever you guys want to call it.

From your waist????? takes to long, maybe in kata but not jiyu kumite
Looks like that first punch really stunnned him, he wasn't doing too much after that.

its not all about speed, its how much it hurts
Asian Fury
27-Jan-2004, 11:04 PM
How can you say it's not about speed? If it gets blocked, it's just wasted power.
Yoshukai

yes, speed is important.. so is power.
If im trying to drive my fist through his chest, its naturally gonna be going pretty fast anyways. Unless i was fat and slow.
