Any tips on conditioning bones, mainly shins for a person who's still growing? Growing people have softer bones.

If you're still growing, then as Yoda says, just don't.

Agreed, contrary to popular belief, Yoda 'DOES' know what he's talking about.

Trying to condition bones while they are still growing is a very bad idea!

In sum- "DON'T!"

Conditioning bones at any stage is a bad idea!

Try a search on 'Conditioning' on the forum, you'll find a lot of good information.

And a lot of bad too sadly.

kick a heavy bag...a lot. and get plenty of calcium. that'll strengthen your bones. oh, lifting weights increases bone density as well.

well when you feel you've stopped growing - kick the bag, rest for a day, etc etc. It's a slow process.

At my dojo, theres this really really heavy and solid sand bag...must have concrete in it or something. Anyways I kick that with my shins. Or with a partner, one person lays down on their back, and the other uses their ball of their feet to hit down on them. At home i use a beer bottle and hit my shins. Make sure to do it with the shin bare of any cloths.

What totality said, weight training and lots of calcium intake are proven to increase bone density. There's also some evidence that calcium is better absorbed from vegetables than dairy. Eat lots of beans and dark green veggies!

It's also not a good idea to "bang" your shins with objects such as hammers glass bottle and whatever hard object you can find.. in many ways it is actually worse (try rolling the bottle or hard object up and down the length of shin) ... the idea behind shin conditioning is that it is a long but steady process of constantly putting your shins under pressure and impact so that the outside layer of bone will actually break down!! however when this spongy bone starts to rebuild itself it will actually grow back stronger like cement... but its important NOT to kick or do anything when it's in the rebuilding stage (it will actually negate all the work you did to condition em)... i only thing i can recommend is literally kicking a heavy bag hundreds of time (starting off REAL easy then building until you are kicking full power) and taking breaks to massage and get the blood flowing... when you get home soak the shin or wrap it with a warm towel to get the blood flowing and help the rebuilding process... after about a year or so you'll notice your shin are starting to feel like cement and those kicks that hurt before you dont feel a thing

also you if you get one of those "mouse's" or "eggs" in your shin DONT continue to kick on it.. take a LONG break and let it heal (possibly work on conditioning something else like the elbow, forearm, etc)...i know people who have had those knots in their shin hurt for a year!!!!!! def not the results you want

good luck
