How do you size/trim/crop/whatever photographs to a suitable size for use as an Avatar?

I haven't got any special programs, just what came with Windows 98. 'Paint' and stuff like that.

How do you check on the size of a photograph or scan before submitting to the photo gallery?

Using Paint:

I wouldn't know, man. However, you can download really small (and free) programs on http://www.webattack.com/ for that stuff ;)

Checking it:

Open it using MSIE, right click, and click "properties". That should give you the info you need.

Get infranview, link given in must have programs thread (http://www.martialartsplanet.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=6647&highlight=must+have+programs)

Open said image in infranview press ctrl+r then you can set any size, half double also quality and wether you want to retain the height width ratio.

Yoda pointed me in the direction of this software previously, and its really good. It is also got a 'red eye elimination' feature which is really useful for my devil boy.

If you are after a more comprehensive editing / touch up package (for free) then you can also give 'The Gimp' a try. http://www.gimp.org/
