3 threads for 3 questions? lol :)

You can do cardio and weights on the same day, just do cardio after weights.

The reason people advise against it, is that whatever workout you do second will suffer as you are fatigued from your first workout. However, if it is the best use of your time, then it can be done.

Hi leighB, funny coincidence, I am studying sports science at RMIT university here in Melbourne and I can answer that for you :). The reason they say not to do this is because you won’t see the benefits of you free weight training at the same rate as a normal person who is just doing free weights. This is because you are using more fat and protein so the body must compensate for this, resulting in a decline in progressive overload.
I suggest that you spend 3 months on just hard free weights and then once you see improvements then get into your cardio. That is for the best possible benefits, but seeing that you most likely do MA, you are already involved in cardio. So the best thing to do is balance the two but don’t! Do them on the same day it’s simply too much stress for your joints and for your body in general.

Hope that helped.

I think it also depends on what your intention is with the weights training. Is it for gaining size/mass? Or for strength? Or for fat loss?

Doing cardio after weights never gave me a problem. I like finishing up my sessions with lots of hill sprints, been doing that for a few weeks now and am really enjoying it. Saves me a lot of extra time too.

If your goal is weightloss, this is the best approach to take. But yeah, if you are training as opposed to just exercising, as Frodocious points out, your training will suffer.

I don't know if the same applies if you split your workout into two shorter ones, morning and evening - I was reading up on Jake Gyllenhaal's training for "Prince of Persia" the other day (le sigh ), and he was doing something along those lines - an hour weighted hill-runs in the mornings, an hour of weights and stretching in the evening, followed by a massage. (ah, but for a dedicated coach, massage therapist and nutritionist, we could all be gods and goddesses ... or at the least, Persian royalty. :D)
