For the past month I've experienced pain in my left buttock with any significant flexion of the leg. A sports MD diagnosed me with ischial bursits - he showed me the inflamed bursa on ultrasound. I've been following Kurz methods for increasing strength/flexibility with the goal of improving my kicks for TKD.

I have an appointment with a physical therapist in 2 weeks but am hoping I can also get some specific help here.

What I would like to know is if this is a common problem? How should I change my routine to help this heal? What can I do to prevent this from happening again?

Thanks

Please post details of your routine in the weeks leading up to your injury.

Please post details of your routine in the weeks leading up to your injury.

My routine has not changed much in the past 6 months:

Joint rotations
Warm-up
Dynamic stretches
Adductor flys x 100
Hip flexors x 40
Lunges x 50
Good mornings x 50
Squats x 50
Adductor pull-downs x 50
Hamstring pull-downs x 40
Isometric front and side splits stretches
Relaxed stretches

I try to perform the above routine 3x/week and on off days attend TKD classes (about 3 hours/week).

The only real change in my routine over the past 2 months has been practicing a different form which incorporates jump front kicks. Maybe the jump front kicks are the culprit.

I don't see anything in your routine that stands out as a cause of bursitis (provided that you can handle those training loads).

Bursitis usually takes several weeks to develop, so your suspicion about the new form being the cause may be correct. My advice would be to simulate the jumping motion in your form (do the kicks standing) until you receive a course of treatment from the physio.
