I need help. I recently got me a shiny new bo staff and it is very fun to spin round and break lights accidentally with but i don't really know what i'm doing. I asked my Ju-jitsu sensei but he wasn't a massive help:
Me - "Sensei do you know any bo staff katas or techniques?"
sensei phil - "bloody hell i haven't used a bo staff for ages, i can hardly remember anything with that although we don't really use it much in Ju-jitsu anyway!"
.....which was great
if anybody knows a web site with info etc that would be a great help ( but preferably not just a link to buying a book)

Ah yes, a very common problem. I started in a very similiar way, but fortunately my instructor at the time had a very basic grip of Okinawan Kobudo.
The advantage with the modernisation of Okinawan Kobudo within the International Okinawan Kobudo Association USA is that moves became grouped within a set syllabus. This made for easier learning.

The above website gives you an idea on how the bo work is done. It is no where near complete, but its how we teach the basic stuff.
Where abouts in England are you. If you are not confident in posting on here send me a PM. I might be able to link you up with people (even though there aren't many of us). If you live anywhere in Yorkshire or Essex you might be OK.
Hope this helps.

NOTE: its all in words at the moment, but I am hoping to find time to do it on video at some stage.
Shimabuku will be following when I have the time to put it all down.

There are more stick arts than sticks. Some like to hold it like a spear. Others like to whack at you like it was a long*** shinai. Other like hold it in the middle and whack you from close by.
Look into european quarterstaff training. Some fencing schools teach some form of staff. Spain has juego del palo and portugal has jogo de pau. Just as good as any bojutsu, just less known. Don't forget about china, indian, indonesia, phillipines, thailand, either.
