In ancient times the theory of complete body conditioning was based on the then prevalent theory of the Elements. In ancient times the physical body was seen as containing five elements and each element resulted or manifested through a different type of movement.

For example:

Earth: has the quality of strength, stability and endurance. To develop this quality you do the corresponding physical activity’s i.e. something that will develop strength, something that will develop balance and something that will increase endurance.

Water: has the quality of fluidity/flexibility. To develop flexibility you do stretching exercises. Fluidity is not the same as flexibility, think tai chi type movements. Fluidity in Silat could be practiced via the kembangan or knife (when you put a knife in someone’s hands there is a tendency to make fluid movements)

Fire: Is expansive/explosive. To develop this explosiveness striking or drills which concentrate on speed.

Air: Has the quality of lightness. To develop this activity’s which increase agility are done, anything which involves jumping, tumbling or the human body in momentary flight.

Iron/metal: Has the quality of magnetism or in relation to the body something which in the west was once called animal magnetism. Iron/metal relates specifically to the lungs and is developed via breathing exercises i.e. Tenaga dalam, Qi gong, Pranayame, Ki etc

Ahh.. I see you're all not gotten acquainted with Silat Lincah. That's what they do.

Like it or not, still gets your attention, no?

Still I say, Silat is at times the best and at times the worst Martial Arts there is.

Selamat. :)

Salam hormat,

Here's Senaman Tua, a silat exercise form that I instruct. Extracted from Silat Melayu Keris Lok 9 and is currently being evaluated by the Malaysian Ministry of Health for endorsement under its alternative healing banner.

This is the official preview
YouTube - Senaman Tua - Khazanah Kecergasan Melayu

and this is the Silat style it came from
