I train formally in 3 FMA systems. Sikal - which is a hybrid of elements from various systems of FMA and of Silat, so not strictly an FMA - and Doce Pares Eskrima/Eskrido (from GM Cacoy Canete). On the FMA side of the Sikal, it draws quite a bit from Balintawak (GM Bobby Taboada lineage) but its core is Lacoste/Inosanto blend. I also train in Sayoc Kali - but because of logistics and time constraints, I'm unable to devote a lot of time to the Sayoc. I just train in it when I can and retain what I'm able.

my style is Pekiti Tirsia Kali.
I'm currently studying it under Rommerl Tortal, the nephew of Tuhon Leo Gaje and the edged and impact weapons instructor for the Philippine Marine Force Recon unit and the police Special Action Force.

-Over the past decades (man, I'm getting old) I've trained in (and taught) modern arnis, the Innayan system, and Cabales serrata escrima. My instructor, Ernie Reyes (Sr.) is of Fillipino descent and when he first became well known in the martial arts world, several FMA masters encouraged him to explore his cultural roots. All three system's GM's (the late R.Presas, M. Innay, and A. Cabales) have had either themselves or some of their senior instructors teaching programs in our schools over the years (also D. Inosanto) and it was mandatory for all the senior BB's to train in these. Of this I am truly grateful because this has taken me to new levels and connected the dots for me in many ways in my own growth as a MA that may not have occured otherwise.

The study of escrima has been pared down and taught as part of our USA Goju training with a reality focus. We learn extensive self defense and have developed two katas that fit our particular style and estetic.

Has anyone trained with Bob Breen? Whats he's teaching like? I'd like to take up Kali in the future and the Bob Breen Acadamy is not far from me. They teach the Inosanto/Lcoste Kali method. Is he a good teacher?

I've had the chance to study two types of Kali:
Inasanto Blend - My instructor (whose name I forgot) was in Guro Kevin Seman's downline. It was ok. Kept me interested but wasn't for me.
Pekiti Tirsia Kali - Guro Doug Marcaida. Love it. Wish I had more time to study it. Make the decision that I needed to concentrate on one Martial Art for a while and my Kung Fu study was more important to my development at that time. Still practice Knife Tapping and expect I'll start Pekiti up again in the next five years or so.
