Just as the title says. Discuss, debate and eventually argue the merits of the two games!

I personally prefered SF2 on a purely graphics basis, and the endings were well cheesy! But I kinda prefered MC with the introduction of Animalities, Brutalities and best of all Frendships ;) (Johnny Cage under a Disco ball, brilliant!)

I liked them both, but I'd definitely pick SF2 as the winner. I thought the gameplay was amongst the best of any fighting game. Maybe because defence was as important as attack, but I had some great battles on there we’re I felt mentally exhausted after.

sorry guys. But mortal kombat on the mega drive was much better than sf2. and cmon what game moves were better than scorpion removing his mask and turning his oppenents into ash. Any of u guys heard of tekken 4?

Of course Tekken 4, as well as the entire Tekken series are much better. MK or SF2 can't compare with Tekken. However between Mortal Kombat And Street Fighter I like and would perfore more of street fighter. I just think it's an over all better game. MK is good yes, but I'd perfer SF, hey, it's just my oppinion.

I liked the Mortal Combat games myself. Street Fighter was good, but it didn't have enough effects for me :D

As per usual - I agree with waya. Considering I have 'Mortal Kombat Trilogy' downstairs.. and since I was a little boy I'd mastered the MK games, my vote definitely goes to mk for the intricies and the skill required to play at a very high level.

Come on, StreetFighter by far. Just the whole animation aspects made the game worth while. Although I do agree about the holding back to block deal. That was kind of cheesey but than again, Mortal Kombat had its draw backs as well. At points the game would seem to slow or sketchy. Not as smooth as SF. Don't get me wrong, MK was a great game, but still I liked SF.

Of course what about the fighting games of today? MK:DA, Virtual Fighter 4, Tekken 4, and the best game I have ever played

SOUL CALIBUR and SOUL CALIBUR 2!!! :D

StreetFighter2 had much better gameplay than Mortal Kombat. Also, when you started playing the editted versions of SF2 like blackbelt and championship editions, they were just mad. The only Tekken ones I played were the first 2 on PS1, and I found them unresponsive.

What about Target Renage - now you are talking retro-fighting games.

Mortal Kombat had pretty bad gameplay, even game reviewers didn't rate it that highly. Whereas Streetfighter was a quality game :)

I agree student person, Soul Calibur, is a great game! Whats the second like? I only had the first on Dreamcast.

I got a Xbox now and Dead or Alive 3 on that is regarded as the best fighter around, and it is decent. Whether its better than Soul calibur, I'm not sure!

And Mortal Kombat on Xbox is a massive improvement over the originals!

I've been thing about getting a gameboy advance, but I carry enough rubbish on me when take into account my phone, minidisc player and extra discs. So I better not place temptation in front of myself, cos I love gadgets.

Most definitely Street Fighter. MK is cool and all but it got really cheesy after part 2. I like the new on ethough Deadly Alliance. But the best overall fighting game is Virtual Fighter 4. Aoi and her Aiki Jiujutsu/Aikido is cool and Goh with his Judo too.

I like King of Fighter. It's quite hard to play. My favorite three is Geese Howard, Ryo, and Terry.

Well, I'd have to go Street Fighter. The moves were smoother and I belive the combos took a bit more skill(Capcom VS Marvel etc is another story).

However if I had to choose between SF2 or Samurai Showdown 2, man don'rt know what I'd pick.

Oh yeah, I also love King Of Fighters. My usual team consists of Terry, Joe, Billy Cane(or Geese). But my current favorite is CApcom Vs. SNK 2, man that game kicksss. My Fav team is Geese, Sagat and Joe. Which reminds me, my friends and I are supposed to check out SNK VS Capcom Chaos tommorow, I'll tell ya how it goes :).

Mortal Kombat....it was just so new for it's time, so different, less cartoony (well it was cartoony) but more dark than Street Fighter. Plus it had that awesome movie with Christopher Lambert (soon to be in MK3, that is released, it's done filming).

Die hard street fighter fan right here!!!

I go way back since sf2 came out and was awesome with ryu.
I was so into that game that I use to bet money on it. I remimber betting once to my cousins friend for $200 if i were to beat him 2 rounds with any character, keep in mind this guy is goood!!! he used to play with guys from japan all the time. So anyway I beat him with ryu and he still hasn't paid to this day. Its funny because when ever i see him which is once in a blue moon I say "so what about that $200" and he starts laughing.

Yeah those were the days. fighting games have come a long way since then with games like virtual fighter, battle arena toshinden, tekken, DOA and so on an so forth but nothing beats the classics.
Maybe because sf2 and mortal kombat had such an impact on everyone, you can say "finish him" and most people would know your talking about mortal kombat, intresting isn't it.

Anyways thats my voice

I've played street figher for at least 10 years now and all I have to say it go baby go. Mortal combat is a simpletons game with no real in depth strategy. Street fighter Alpha 3 is the most in depth counter to counter 2D fighting game to date. I have played that game for at least 4 years. It's great, lots of characters to choose from, variable fighting styles, air block, saftey rolling, air recovery, counter moves up the yang, super move snuffing, secret characters / stages, dodging. To be it just doesn't get any better. I can beat the computer on dificulty 8 with every character in the game. But I can't beat my friend Carson, he is insane and I bow to him as my Sensei of the street :D

To me it all depends on what game you played first while you were growing up. For me it was streetfighter but I remember when mortal kombat first came out and everybody was like WOW this game has BLOOD. I remember back in primary school (junior high) people used to copy the moves: and shout out the speaches like "COME HERE" etc Also when the snes version had no blood while the megadrive version had blood only when u acessed the cheat.

Man this stuff brings me back to when life was simple

SF ALPHA 3 HAD changes that made the SF engine worse.
The GLORIEST Time of SF was in ALPHA 2.

Mortal Kombat, with the finnish hims, the combos and the amazing powers. And of course, Sub-Zero and Scorpion, the coolest Ninja style guys possible!
Oh and the pit levels, uppercut your foes to the deep pits full of spikes, that was fun, and if your scorpion you could rip their heads our their bodies...... or was that Sub Zero... great i'm confused now!
