YouTube - HAPKIDO TECHNIQUES

I think I see an attacker acting in a very unrealistic way.
I see techniques that I don't believe would work in any sort of real fight I've seen.
I see habits being formed because of it that are detrimental to both people in that video.
I see a quite high degree of skill in performing the techniques themselves.

Very little unbalancing of the opponent if any.
I am suspicious of techniques where you block the underarm of your opponent when he punches you.
I see some nice throws and jointlocks, but am afraid they won't work like that in real life. So it depends on what the purpose of the video is and at what level of student it aims to be able to say anything really meaningful about it.
Who is the person in the video and what is your relation with him?

Well, the person in this video is Yaro Havelka:
Hapkido - 4th degree Black Belt
Modern Arnis - 3rd degree Black Belt
Ko Am Mu Do - 3rd degree Black Belt
FCS Kali - 1st degree Black Belt
Color belts: Judo, Shotokan Karate
He is my instructor.
The video was simple "home video" he did, and its just a demontration of some of the techniques that could be used. No real target is my guess, I would really have to ask him.
As for the wrist locks not working in realy life, there I would really have to disagree. I have used wrist locks PERSONALLY, especially in one confortation in a bar, and I know that it was quite successful. Don't forget, we do want his assistant to be able to go to work tomorrow.
In real life situation, some of the nice wrist locks, would be more of a wrist BREAKS. Yaro has a unique was of showing you a "pretty" technique like the one in the video, and then he shows you how you could modify it to make it even more dangerous, painful deadly.

The techniques look good, however, the way they are being done in the video seems to emphasize more flow over effectiveness. I would say this was a video for demonstration, not for teaching how to really take out someone using these techniques. For instance, punch to the groin was out of range, a lot of hits were not done with a dropping of the weight, etc.
The way to tell is how uke reacts to the hits. You see where the stuff is good, and you see where uke could have countered had he been trying to. In a demo you don't get counters, in training, you want uke to try to counter to an agreed upon level. A teaching video would have gone over uke countering or resisting the technique... hope this makes sense.
Hey and don't worry about any negative comments on the video, it happens... thanks for sharing.

Thank Rebel Wado,
Yes, this was demonstration DVD. Just to show some Hapkido - not an instructional DVD's. The instructor does have instructional DVD's that are done differently. Shows the technique FAST, then step by step, then with counter and resistance, and with "modifications" of the same principal.
I just wanted to share this video, mainly because I LOVE the way this man moves!! Being on the receiving end, its amazing how he uses energy and even though it looks like he is not taking you off balance, you FEEL like he has complete control over were you go. And, one of the reasons why he is my instructor, is because any time he strikes (even just to "check" your hand) it literally feels like he just hit a major pressure point and it sends the pain right though your entire body.

If its just a technique demo video I'd say not a bad little clip. Other than that I'd be inclined to agree with Slindsay to a point, a lot of that would be hard to pull off under preasure but again that really doesn't have any bearing on the quality of the demonstration.

I see unatural attacking. In my decades of observations and/or experiences, I never seen any front step with a straight lunge punch commonly seen in many self defense dojo applications.
If it is for demostration, the only people it will impress are those who dont know better. IMHO.
