it appears to me these are extremely useful for fighting multiple attackers while on the ground, and unbelievably slow, awkward and useless for normal combat. in other words, i would wnat to execute a ground kick when i'm on the ground...i wouldn't want to drop down when i am already standing.

who agrees/disagrees?

sorry, but i didn't understand what you're saying. please rephrase that, if it isn't too much trouble.

drop kicks seem only useful when you are already on the ground.

it does not seem useful to drop to the ground, execute a drop kick, then come back up again.

thoughts?

No Drop Kicks are usually from the 22 over the posts see...

Or in Wrestling, stood up and you drop kick someone.

Kicking from the Floor or kicking on the floor is what you are on about and they're very useful skills, if you happen to find yourself......On The Floor.

Unless you are doing summat like the Five Ancestors etc Drop Leg scissors, as in loads of Kung Fu ststems, or Hapkido etc etc.

Have their place.

We do teach a selection of kicks that can be used from the ground. We do NOT drop to the ground to use them, rather they are used if we end up on the ground after being pushed/falling/etc. Many of the kicking techniques can be added to rolls and breakfalls... for the situation of going down and having to defend yourself when you don't have the opportunity to get back to your feet for whatever reason.

My personal favorite is from a position laying on my side (side breakfall)... lift the leg into a chamber and use a chopping side kick... aimed at opponent's groin, inner thigh, knee, ankle, etc. This is good if you get thrown or pushed down (land) and the opponent(s) come in towards you. It can be used to keep them at bay.

I hope that answers something for you... if you have any more sprecific questions, please clarify.

Actually I have been taught some dropping kicks, where we actually drop to the ground and kick from a standing position. I have only done it as a defense for a high spinning wheel or hook kick where you have no where else to go but drop to keep from getting hit. As was stated I would not go to the ground on purpose and would rather stay standing, but if it comes between me getting kicked in the head, and going to the ground, I'll call the pavement my home.

Silly me... Jointlock, after reading your last post I remembered that we do have some low kicks where as you turn you do 'drop' down... one example as you mentioned against a hook or spinning heel kick is to turn, drop to a 3 point-like stance with your foot facing back and spin with a low crouching spinning heel kick.

We also have a double front kick low in which you do end up on your butt... I guess that counts as well.

I think I forgot them because we don't really do them that often. I personally don't care for them but I do need to review them in case I need to teach them somewhere down the line!

drop kicks are good if for example you can time you oppont when he executes a round house to the head, or a spinning back kick to the head or a side kick you can drop an thus avoid his kick and at thesame time hit him in the gonads.

The down round is the signature kick of Hapkido according to what I was taught. I was always too slow in doing it for the tech. to be an effective counter though.

Kicks from a prone position always seemed a sad substitute for knowing other options from the ground to me. No real way to get good power generation.
