View Full Version : Illness preventing you from training?

Evening :hat:
Just got back from the hospital. Turns out the chest infection I've had for the last month is acute bronchitis. Figured something was wrong when I was puking blood through my nose. Doctor prescribed me enough antibiotics to take out any virus the size of Texas.
Anyway, apart from my need to bitch about my illness, the reason for this thread was to ask if anyone else here has been forced to postpone training because of a badass illness? I wanted to start my brand new training routine this week, but my illness decided it wanted more attention so I haven't even touched my training routine. Haven't done a single push-up, thrown a single punch nor even *shock, gasp* tried to stretch. Horror, I know.
But have you ever had to postpone your shiny new training routine / shiny existing training routine, and if so, what was the illness? Or injury?

Injury. I hurt my elbow and while it wasn't that bad, I just had to be careful.
And then there was that time I was conned into looking after someone's dogs for a few weeks. They didn't make great training partners.

Antibiotics don't kill viruses at all. The bacteria will get a blasting though.

Separated my right shoulder 1 week prior to going underway on a US Trident Submarine. It was misdiagnosed as a strain so that I was forced to go underway. That kind of thing happens a lot. Had just gotten back into exercise after a 3 year breake. I was 230lbs at 5'9" (fat...no nice way to put it). For the entire 3 months we were at sea all I could do for exercise was cardio.
IT WAS THE BEST THING THAT EVER HAPPENED TO ME!!!
I lost 40lbs in that three month period!! I have never gained the fat back. I've gained nice lean muscle instead! :)

Ye after a few weeks when i finnaly started training again a few months ago. I got the most retarded thing i'v ever had and hopefully ever will get exertional headaches maybe the most annoying part is that no one knows where it comes from or whats causing it and apperently a very small ammount of people get it for life :S. Anyways i'm very glad that after 4/5 weeks rest it went away. Good luck with your recovery superfoot hope you get back to your stretching soon ;).

Lets see, all of these were non-martial art related injuries over the last ten years: Broken right clavicle, broken right big toe, left knee surgery for torn cartilage, getting the bends while scuba diving, right inner ear surgery, multiple chest infections/bronchitis..... I'm not stupid, just extremely active and probably do more things than I should. I also date women who are a lot younger than I which leads me to doing more things that I shouldn't be doing at my age....sigh.....

Not really an illness but an injury. Just got an MRI back which confirmed that I have L4-S and L5-S1 degenerative disc protrusions, which explains a lot of my recurring back pain, unshiftable lordosis as well as the trapped sciatic nerve forcing my right leg to cramp causing agonizing pain whenever I get up or sit down. The doctor has recommended I seriously consider spinal surgery and has limited lifting to 3 Kg and below.

its a good thing 6 pacs are lighter then 3kg but the degenerative disc protrusions is a thing you where born with or ?

Not sure yet, it's possible that it's been around for years but not made itself known before but I'm waiting to get back to the uk for a follow up GP appointment.

I battled through crohnic sinus problems throughout the winter, it does effect my cardio at times but it has'nt stpped me.
here's hoping you get well and get to start your new shinny routine:)
I have to fit my training around chronic renal failure.
There are times when I've felt too ill to train, but I've managed to train while on dialysis with various tubes coming out of me. You do what you can - safely.
Ultimately it is the strength of the mind that is the most important thing. You can give your body a break from time to time.

And he manages a few beers afterwards sometimes too! Respect.:)

When I was 15 I got tonsillitis about 3 times, mono, a horrendous infection around my rib cage, and my great-grandmother who was very close to me died. Not a very fun time at all. And I'm not nearly as fit as I was.

Damaged knee cartilege, was inflamed, became damaged... been mauled ever since.
I still can't always get up in the morning and start walking around without doing exercises. Can't crouch like I used to, can't use weights, have to be very very careful of any form of resistance work involving my knees and ditto with stretches.
Taken two years to get to the point where I can go a day without doing physio stuff, my knees still bend in the wrong directin and hyperextend.
Safe to say, this has caused me to take just a little (likely lifetime) break from certain training.

I was on a cadet exercise doing about 15miles a day or so up hills down hills over mountains and that sort of thing, fair bit of running around. For whatever reason my knees decided they really didn't like that, went to the doctor he said it was just inflamation and it will be gone in 2 weeks.
3 weeks later I went back and the doctor changed his story to something along the line of "Oh my goodness I don't know whats happened to your knees but this isn't good".
Went to a physio who instantly said the cartilege was now the consistancy of extra rough scotch sandpaper and grinding against itself and the bone etc. Got some exercises to fix that, but after a year it hadn't healed. Went ao another physio who promptly declared that the muscles had totally rearranged themselves and rebalanced to take the weight of the damaged bits, so its been now... maybe 2 years of trying to retrain my muscles to work like they should do. If I wanted to do an MA with serious kicking and the like in it I would probably have to wear supports to make sure.

Got back from a boarding trip in Japan couple weeks ago where I spent the time in minus temps with a chest infection, got off the plane in Melbourne to record breaking heat waves and incredibly smoky air due to the horrendous fires we've had here. Haven't responded to antibiotics or steroids so I just had a run of blood tests, chest x-rays and an EKG today which were just wonderful
limbs are stiffer than ever, i feel like I'm turning into jelly and I cant sleep at night cause I cant burn off any energy

When I was 14, I was planning to do a selection of famous SAS training routes over the brecon beacons. At the time, I was planning to go into the forces. Unfortunately, I twisted my ankle running on the friday before I was due to leave, and it swelled to the size of a grapefruit. I was given antibiotics and told to rest for a couple of weeks.

*Sigh*
Still got this mother of all chest infections. Had three different courses of antibiotics (amoxycillin, erythromicin, and one I won't even attempt to spell) and it just ain't moving. Had another chest x-ray at the beginning of Feb but the results aren't back yet, was told to call back later in the week to see if they have arrived.
My training has returned to semi-normality. I'm stretching every day and lifting weights 3 or 4 times a week, with one serious pad work and sparring session. Unfortunately I've put on 5 kg of flab because I can't run. About 30 seconds into the run I feel like my lungs are going to vacate themselves from my body via one of two exit routes... :o
I sympathise Superfoot. I've just finished course 4 of antibiotics since Christmas and the pneumonia still hasn't fully gone away. Will be off to the doctors again this week to have my lungs sounded out and whatever the result still have to go back to hospital for more x rays to check that they are clear.

Just got the x-ray results back...
Normal.
Wonder why the hell this chest infection isn't moving then? :bang:
