Hello again!

I'm interested to know

1. What's your favorite Aikido technique/techniques?

and

2. What is your least favorite Aikido technique/techniques?

I have several techniques that I enjoy doing but I specifically like the Nikkyo and Kotegaeshi. I also enjoy the rare times we do Henka Waza.:p

The techniques I really don't like are most forms of Irimi Nage and all forms of Koshinage! The main reason I don't like them is because I can barely do them! Especially Koshinage!
:( Oh well, I'm sure I'll eventually get better and learn to like them.

1. I`d have to say that Irimi Nage was one of my favourite techniques, I suppose if I don`t say Shomen Ate is one of them as well, Silver, Freeform et al will make some sort of comment.

2. I dislike the grip changes, I know they`re necessary but they`re just a pain trying to do them, especially the stupid f*@$ing twisty ones.

Just in case ayone is wondering, shomen ate and irimi nage are sometimes one and the same thing depending on Aikido style. Spike, most of our atemi waza are considered irimi nage to others. To me (shodokan, irimi nage consists of catching uke's head in the crook of the elbow, then closing the arm tight as if posing to show of your biceps. This gives you control over their head. Turning the hips should then take the opponent very quickly backwards, then let gravity do the rest. OK, rubbish explanation I admit. Some styles seem to focus on this technique quite heavily, mainly the more traditional schools that have a more direct lineage to O'sensei. When done wrong, it looks terrible. Done right it's quite scary. Best I've managed is almost a complete somersault when thrown with this. Somehow landed in a kneeling position. Most amusing.:p

My favourite technique changes every few months. Currently enjoying gedan ate (I'm only a wee lad, so it makes sense to use low techniques), and a fairly scary one that I can't explain, but I think everyone from my club knows, and I'll let them explain it if they can be bothered (Mike McCavish in Wales anyone!)

Least favourite technique? Probably ude gaeshi. Unless you move like lightning it's almost impossible to achieve against a resisting opponent.

Hmm, depends what mood I'm in.

Shomen Ate, Ai Gamae Ate and Osh Taioshi. I also have to mention Waki Gatame for the same reason as Spikes Shomen Ate!

What I don't like, hmm.....

..... Mae Otosh, cause I'm pants at it.

I`m getting to appreciate shi anage right now, as well as me and Tintin`s modified little elbow one.

I like any technique that results in me or my partner flying through the air as fast as possible.

And those sneaky wrist locks are cool....

and the one where you grab the blokes wrist and he pulls back and brings the grabbed hand into your face....

in fact there all good.

Having now sold my fuel thirsty car for a diesel i may be able to attend the aikido on a more regular basis.

Now, now lads, form an orderly queue! FF will get round to you!

So Fluffy what would be your favorite Aikido technique, would it be the throat strik..... I mean Shomen Ate?

Yes, I favour both the shomen and gyaku gamae throat strikes. What do you mean they're just meant to be distractions! - I thought that's what I was doing!

Freeform

Yes, I agree. Coughing up blood IS very distracting!

Whats your best randori technique?

I favour Gedan Ate, Waki Gatame, Ai Gamae Ate and running at people shouting!

Hmm, I do have a soft spot for the faintly worrying Mae Otoshi balance break from the front. (Basically reach under and past their armpit, pull them into you using somewhere between their elbow and shoulder as a lever, then let gravity and a hip turn do the rest)
Got to be careful not to pop their elbow though.

Isn't that banned in Randori though?

Yep.
Kote gaeshi seems to work well for me although is best with an italian accent.

Tintin

No, its only banned if you wrap both their legs up with yours, as they tend to go face first unprotected into the ground. Blocking one leg is fine though.

Actually, it sounds best in a Scouse accent!:D

I have to favour Kokyu Nage, Tenchi Nage and Sumi Otoshi.

As a technique done on myself I have to fear Kote gaeshi as when that is applied hard and fast you better be on your game to counter it.

Kokyu Nage? Wassat?

Doesn't it translate as breathing throw?

The kokyu nage technique relies more heavily on the breath as part of the throw. It does not involve joint immobilisation but instead fluidity of movement and the transference of power whilst using your breathing to project the assailant into harms way. Before you ask, you don't have to have eaten garlic or other such smelling substances for it to be really effective. :)

It can be truly devastating and you can literally walk through opponents.

I dont have a least favourite.

But Kokyu-nage is my favourite throw.

I have to inform you all that I'm a bit handy with Ude Gaeshi these days.

Been catching Tintin with it alot ;)
Although he has a working theory that whatever you attck with, as long as its not atemi, then he can use osh taioshi. Catches me anyway :(

Thats ok, I like atemi :D

ive gotta go for some irimi nage and shomenate.. im tall. i love nikajo and although im crap at it (im tall) i like koshi nage. god the list goes on.

i love the way every technique can be applied so dynamically. appropriate to the situation.

there are no techniques i dislike. just ones that frustrate me. which i like. does that make me a bad man....

The footwork is the best things as its like no other style some of the tight but effective turns.

Least is shi anage.

Takes to long and would be luck to get it to work.

Irimi-nage, both entering and tenkan. I'm beginning to enjoy kokyu-nage.
And if I'm allowed to cheat then I like leg sweeps.

I'm starting to think that TenChi-Nage is just Kokyu-Nage with a name.

Virtuous
13-Jan-2004, 01:06 PM
I dont think Tenchi nage is that close to a kokyu nage. Tenchi nage the force is applies in a circular fashion at two opposing points, kokyu the force usually is applied at one point and is used o lead the uke out and and then abruptly comes down.

My favorite throws would probably be sumi otoshi, Sanakjo, irimi nage, tenchi nage, and osoto takubi nage.

Least favorite would have to be kaiten nage

Kokyu-dosa is Tenchi-Nage. :D

my favorite has to be irimi nage, i know i have only spent a few months in aikido, but man something about the fluidity of that technique, whether being uke or nage, it just really makes me at peace. I actually prefer to have it practiced on me, helps me see how I can improve my own irimi nage, since everyones is a bit different.

O'Sensei used to always say NEVER have a favorite technique and don't concentrate too much on where the foot is placed or where the hand is placed because a technique will be different tomorrow or in a fight rather understand what the techniques are trying to tell you

(Very deep I know) but let's work on this

I feel that it is important to understand your advantages (ie skill in one technique, physiology of yourself) but it is also important never to favor that technique because let's be honest there's no perfect technique that will work in every situation

I also feel that O'Sensei was trying to tell his students and all of us to blend with all techniques good or bad because it's our goal to one day harmonize with the universe *very deep yet again

Jus a lil reminder to all o us aikidoka

thanks about the quote, Master Sword I agree with you, hell even the same attack varies every time thus making the technique different or even sometimes not really the best choice. Favorite technique to me means what technique do I enjoy using and having done to me, that would still be irimi nage, i love the spin and the fall at a speed that is to the point where my body can hardly stay in control, it is such a rush.

Does hitting people with a big stick count? I like to use my bokken whenever I get the chance or failing that my jo and if that's not aloud a good tenchinage always makes people pay attention but if I'm feelin sneaky nothing beats nikkyo.
