Hello,
I'm interested to find out what rank fellow Aikido practioners are. So how about it?
As for myself, I'm a lowly 5th kyu and will probably test for my 4th kyu next month. :)

I'm currently a 2nd Dan, but begining to consider the possibility of taking 3rd next year. I'd prefer to take it in Japan, although given the cost involved I'll have to see how thing go. I'm more than happy with where I am at the moment anyway (plus I need a hell of a lot of work on my Randori) . Nothing worse than trying to grade before you're ready.
Good luck with your 4th kyu by the way:) :) :)

I have no rank in Aikido and don't practice it - however, one of my Eskrima students who is currently coming up to his 1st Degree BB exam is an Aikido 3rd Dan.

I am currently a Shodan in TKD Hopefully by the end of January 2003 I will be a Nidan. I say hope because it seems that every time I'm ready to test, something happens like breaking my knee, back going out, or wrecking my motorcycle. 2003 will be the end of the bad luck!

Hey Fuzzy, I'm just about to start training Aikido...was just wondering, how often do you grade?? We grade every 6 months...that a standard sort of time?

Gradings..... is that all your interested in?
If you train in some styles of Aikido, you'll not get graded until your a BB.
Thanx

Don't mind freeform, he's just a grouchy old sod! ;)
Gradings have a useful part to play, for your own confidence building, to allow others to know the level you are at for safe training, or simply to put you under a bit of pressure if you are one of the people that finds those situations stressful.
And well done on the 4th Kyu fuzzy panther. Onwards and upwards to 3rd now.....!

Thanks Tintin!:) We test about once a year and sometimes we wait more than a year--depends how the Sensei feel if we're ready or not. My mom tested 4th kyu with me and did she great!!! 2 other people tested for 3rd kyu, and 2 guys tested for black belt!!! The big surprise of the evening was my sensei was forced to test for his 2nd dan! He could have taken it several years ago but he's been putting it off. My sensei had no idea he would be testing last night but he and everyone else did wonderful!!!

I had 10 years of all sorts of m.a. before coming to aikido. Now I have no intention of going anywhere else. Aikido is what I was looking for all that time. I'm finally home. During my first two years I didn't test because I didn't want to test because I didn't care about the color of my belt. Then I moved, and decided that maybe it would be nice to have a diploma to show for all my work. But, DOH! They wouldn't let me jump ranks! I had to start at the bottom. So, my piece of paper says 6th kyu in ASU aikido. Whatever. I'm in it until I die so I don't really care what the piece of paper says.

You're making a big issue about it considering you don't care :D

Wow! This is an old thread! I passed my 4th kyu test in October of 2002! I would surely love to be able to test for 3rd kyu but I don't know when I'll get to test as the founder of our organization passed away last year and we're not sure how things are going to work now. :(

Is there a term used for unranked beginers in aikikai? Where I practice all beginers are just white belts and the first grading is for 5th kyu or yellow belt.

I have a 5th kyu in Kolesnikov's (I think..whatever Laurent Haquin does)
I have a 5th kyu from the Institute of Aikido.
And I have a 5th kyu (I think) in Shodokan.
But I only voted once :)

I am currently a student of Tomiki/Shodokan Aikido... I had a question for all you yudanshakas (black belts)... i know that i can test for my shodan at my school, however, my sensei has stated that we must test for the higher dan's at official shodokan testing seminars type thingies.... i was wondering what they entailed because people have been telling me different things left and right... also how often they test.. perhaps a website
any input fellow tomiki-ers?

I thought 'lost in translation' was great. A thankfully different film from most of the others coming out at the moment. Plus it reminded me of Japan, especially those tiny white zori/flip flops.
Yes, just who is this mysterious Martin person who doesn't post much? Oops, it's me!:D
I assume your gradings will follow the same format as mine, and all I can say is that the difference will be that you have a panel of fairly high graded instructors to put you under a bit more pressure. And you'll probably have further to travel (Britain is nice and small, Edinburgh to London is about the furthest I usually have to travel. Still too damn expensive though!)
If I remember my shodan grading, it consisted of the tanto randori no kata, then the goshin no kata, then piles of randori. I was on the verge of being physically sick at the end. The relief at the end was almost as good as the verdict that I had passed.

For my shodan I had to know every technique from every grading I had ever done plus a load of techniques defence against a live tanto, a bokken kata, kokyunage two men holding, a load of techniques on my knees and I had to deal with a four man attack. If that wasn't bad enough I was the first student in our new organisation who was taught directly by the head of the organisation to be graded for shodan. I thought I had faild about half way through and that was the one and only time I have ever been nervouse during a grading.

Test was postponed due to seminars. Did it last night, and if the spectators were being honest with me, I did an excellent job. Woo-hoo! A round of beer on me!
