Hmm... I duno where to start (some good suggestions already).
And I'd say 5 of my favourties (in no real order):
Dark Forces/Jedi Knight Series, ahh to play with a light saber and force powers...(and when you had in JK2 and threw enemies off ledges :D) nice :)
Age Of Empires series, cool when you got to buid campaigns and 'script' in AOE2
Ultima Underworld, ahh cool RPG stuff, ran on a 486 (would be one game i wish I could get running right on my AMD XP 2400+)
Theme Hospital, just really jokey which I like :)
And finally, Womrs series (Armageddon is a good laugh wi the voice files), just another 'slapstick' humor typed game... Banna Bombs and exploding sheep, not someting you see everyday :D

1 - Halo
2 - UT (IT RoXoRz)
3 - GTA vice city
4 - Jedi knight 3 (jedi acadamy)
5 - Metal Gear Solid (PSX)
All these games rock for the simple reason they took what was currently available in their area of the market and instead of sticking with a tired old game formula, something NEW and origional was added, That makes great game.
PS - note the above statement does not hold true for JK3, but that game roxor'd because of the kick a$$ light sabre battles, NUFF SED.

To rate games, I have to break them up.
Fighters: Soul Calibur 2, Guilty Gear X2, Rival Schools, Mortal Kombat 3, Street Fighter 2 Turbo. (Also Dynasty Warriors 4 if it counts in this section.)
Shooters: I'm not as big on shooters. The only ones I really liked were Halo, Doom 2, and Diablo 2 (I don't care if they say it's an RPG! It's a shooter!).
RPGs: Xenosaga: Die Wille Zur Macht, Final Fantasy 9,
Final Fantasy X (for having the single most addictive mini-game ever crated), Silent Hill 2, Martian Gothic. (Those last two are in the RPG section for having a background and story so scary they gave me nightmares.)
Rhythm games: DDR (Preferably 3rd, 4th, or 5th, but Extreme is okay), Pump It Up, Para Para Paradise, Mad Maestro, Gitaroo Man. (Karaoke Revolution gets an honorable mention for being a good idea, but the gameplay didn't really work.)
*bows* Thank you, thank you. This ought'a teach you not to ask that question around a video game nerd.

Oh yeah i just remembered a really fun game. happens to be the first game i got when i first bought a playstation years ago. Was called "Tomba!"
The idea of a side scrolling little guy with long hot pink hair and a voice like the lil guys on wizard of oz sounds a little retarded, but it had alot of really fun quests, had a strange, yet entertaining storyline. Was a very fun adventure game. i'd probably have to add that to my list of favorites of all time.

You gotta play through the whole thing. If you can just forget the random encounters and see them as movies, you might get it. The biggest factor is the stories. IX and VII especially highlight this. They are on a wider scale than the Lord of the Rings. When you think of the contrast between the plot of the beginnning and the end, you'll see it for what it is, epic.

#1 - Chrono Trigger: Short and awesome. Almost every game has a core of people who hate it, but I never heard of anyone disliking CT.
#2 - Final Fantasy VII: Despite a horrible translation, and repetitive dialogue, somehow the game just made you feel like you were there.
#3 - Wing Commander Privateer: Awesome game system, surprisingly good voice acting (for a US game), and the great "you are there" feeling.
#4 - Ultima Online: Despite the bugs, the earliest versions of the game were unbelievably fun. Too bad it's become like other MMOGs now...
#5 - Jagged Alliance: A mix of strategy and personality. It is a great shame more people didn't hear of this wonderful series, it might have survived longer.
#6 - Valkyrie Profile: Ranked for it's originality, the reflections upon life and death, and a great romp through Norse Mythology!
-------------------------------------------------------
Darn, I couldn't keep it to 5... and there are so, so many games that deserve mentioning! But for my frail judgement, those were probably the best. All the Japanese games which moved my emotions (which so many other things failed to do)... can't list them all, but there were a lot.
-------------------------------------------------------
For those who didn't know, some old DOS game enthusiasts made a program called DOS Box. It's open source I think, and obviously free. Great if you want to relive some of the older games...

3. GTA series, beginning at GTA 3 on

6. If it were top six Ocarina of Time would have to be on the list too.

you just might be one of the most unintelligent people i've ever met.
Final Fantasy is the land mark series of gaming period, 100's of years from now, people will still be talking about the Fianl Fantasy series, and most likely still producing them.
and did i see someone say that FF9 was good? :woo: :bang:

Mariokart 64 is great (original Mariokart was a bit buggy--I'm looking at you, red shells!) but hardly one of the top 5 games of all time.
And seriously, there's a significant dearth of Super Metroid votes. Is everybody's memory that short?
and did i see someone say that FF9 was good? :woo: :bang:
And Final Fantasy 9 IS good, just not legendary. I much prefer 6 though. I'm in the process of replaying all the numbered FF games (no Gameboy or Crystal Chronicles or Mystic whatever) to get a definitive ranking of them all. So far, 6 is on top, followed by 10 in a distant second (FF7 freaks will consider this blasphemy) and then 8. I haven't replayed 7 yet, but I'm reasonably sure it'll slot in there somewhere between 10 and 8. 10-2 likely won't move from the bottom spot, even if they make 50 more games.
This is all pretty moot anyway though because we all know that the best game bearing the FF name is Final Fantasy Tactics.
Let the flames begin ;)

FF7 freaks will consider this blasphemy
the best game bearing the FF name is Final Fantasy Tactics.
Let the flames begin ;)
that IS blasphemy, you must be the devil. :D seriously though....8? come on, not much effort was put into the emotional attachment of 8, it was rather dull, not nearly as engrossing or hooking. i wasn't apathetic to any of the characters at all, nothing was tragic about it. Now 7, that was the greatest game of all.....its spawned millions of fans and a few cults, :D . how can you not shead a tear for sephiroth?
TACTICS??!?! HOW DARE YOU AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH HHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH HHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :woo: :woo: :woo:

that IS blasphemy, you must be the devil.
I admitted that 7 was better than 8. I think the magic system in 8 makes the game way too easy and way too slow, but i found that even years later when I picked it up I was pretty impressed.
Just remember, a cool villain does not make a game great. Solid gameplay and entertainment make a great game with story third (though that might be part of entertainment) and replay value fourth. After you finish FF7, do you instantly say "I really want to play that again!" or do you simply move onto the next? FF6 and FFT give me that reaction, and I've played them each countless times.

Starcraft: Brood War
The greatest RTS of all time, NOT arguably. Completely original, perfectly balanced, and the most versatile RTS of all time. By that I mean, from the myriad of basic units and strategies, come SO very many innovative strategies and tactics that the game has sublayer after sublayer after sublayer of strategy. The campaigns are fantastic, Battlenet.com is huge and in the good old days not everyone used maphack or played BGH (Blech!) so it made for hours of good gameplay.
Final Fantasy VII
The story is absolutely epic and enthralling. Very few games have such a huge and expansive story that you start to lose touch with where it all began, and this is one of them. When I first played through this game and was travelling down the crater toward the final battle, I sponteneously started to think back to the beginning of the game, 100 hours ago, when I had just been a lonely merc taking a job to blow up some power plant. Then I started thinking of all the places I've been, people I've met, and events I'd experienced, and it all just seemed so.... huge. Also, materia system is the greatest, I loved it so much. The summons were awesome, the characters were detailed and weren't as 1-dimensional as the vast majority of games. Chocobos were one of the greatest aspects of any game ever, and finally breeding the elusive Gold Chocobo (WITHOUT looking it up on a FAQ or something equally lame) was one of the most rewarding experiences of any game to date. And the music was absolutely beautiful and memorable.
Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time
Mind you, this was hard to choose over Link to the Past, but Ocarina of Time ultimately tops out over the Zelda 3. The implementation of time in this game was brilliant, not only the day/night cycle and the way it dramatically affected the game (Rather than being a cute feature like it is in too many games) but also the two separte worlds that are created between young link and adult link, and how what you do in the former affects the latter. The Z-Targetting system was very useful and smooth. The many minigames were very entertaining. The temples dungeons and items were all very high quality, unique, and very intriguing. The music and sound was fantastic as well. The story, the side stories, the progression, the open-ended elements, all of it comes together to make a brilliant game that I played through numerous times.
Super Mario 64
Like Ocarina of Time to Zelda 3, Mario 64 barely beats out Super Mario World in my mind. Both are fantastic games, but Nintendo stepped it up with Mario 64 and really brought the franchise into a whole new era of brilliance and value. The environments are very captivating, with interactivity bringing them to a high level of greatness. Flying was absolutely incredible in this game, and I remember playing with my friends for hours just in the first level, shooting out of the floating isle cannon and then flying all over the place, dive bombing as close to the ground as possible before we pull up. There is such a wide variety of levels and activities that the game manages to overfill its own supposed genre and spill over unto the fringes of many other ones. Awesome game, great gameplay and the controls are smooth and excellent.
Warcraft III: The Frozen Throne
While it does not compare as an RTS to Starcaft BW at all, it is still a very innovative game with the greatest replay value of any game I've ever played in my life. The hero system is genius, and sets this game far apart from any that ever preceded it. To mix RPG and RTS elements as smoothly as Blizzard did is testament to their unchallenged superiority in game creation and innovation. The 4 races, though not as unique from eachother as the 3 in Starcraft, are nonetheless very different and balanced very well, which makes for exciting gameplay and choice in tactics. The campaigns are also some of the best I've ever played. However, the greatest thing about WCIII is the World Editor. It grants the user so much control over their creation that it provides for infinite possibilities in custom maps. This is why I said this game has the greatest replay value of any game - because it comes with the tools to transform into anything the user can imagine. WCIII can become solely an RPG, or action-adventure, or arena fighting, or action-horror, or a myriad of other things so long as their is devotion from the gamers - and there most certainly is, with thousands of high quality maps on the internet that turn WCIII into a completely different experience through the magic and brilliance of its editor.
If anyone disagrees with my list and reasons, may their eyes melt from their sockets and their existence as a gamer promptly be extinguished.

Red Faction's railgun definitely goes onto the list of "Coolest Game Weapons Ever". It was all in the sound and the light blue trail it left. Whenever I played, I would purposely MISS my opponents, shooting right in front of their face, giving them a quick adrenaline rush and some butt sweat as they stared at the beam of death and listened to the scariest sound in existence, then realized they were only 2 seconds away from dying :D

well put, Final Fantasy VII is quite possibly the greatest game ever made.
I'll never forget that exeriance, it was so engrossing, you simply HAD to continue, you HAD to find out what came next. that game changed my life.
strangely enough, i have the same birthday as cloud August 19th. wierd stuff.
i was obsessed with sephiroth for the longest time, who he was, who he had become, the diffrent possiblities. i tried to determine his age, the text on the Jenova helmet, i'd wonder the mansion for hours looking for clues, then the Reactor, the town of Nibelhiem was filled with eggs and clues. that game was simply amazing, there were so many diffrent things that were intriguing, i'll remember that game for the rest of my life. i was seriously obsessed with it. I am DYING to get my hands on the first copies of the PS2 remake and the Movie "Advent Children"

1. Final Fantasy VII/ X. My favourite depends entirely on the day. 7 was undoubtedly bigger and braver, but X's story just resonated with me and the PS2 hardware just made it look the way all FF games should look. Aside from IX, there hasn't been a single FF game that I haven't thoroughly enjoyed
2. Metal Gear Solid 2/ 3. I can't decide between the two. Great gameplay, great graphics and great stories that are complex enough to confuse idiots enough to make them stay away from my game! :D
3. God of War. I've just gotten ahold of this and everything - everything - is right. Where games like Devil May Cry and Onimusha 3 have done very well, there have been hurdles where they've slipped, be it controls, voice acting, stupid level design, crappy boss fights etc, whereas everything in God of War is perfect. Possibly the best action combat game ever (the dude's got daggers on chains attached to him! How can that not rock?!)
4. GTA3. Vice was bigger, San Andreas was even bigger and better, but GTA3 was the purest. I loved the city, I loved the weapons and I especially loved that I didn't get stuck for three months doing stupid street races in the countryside then stupid flying school :woo:
5. Xenosaga Episode I. The first part of what will (assuming they finish it) form a six part series of games, and it's a great place to start. Final Fantasy fans should definitely check it out
My PC's been misbehaving lately and I can't get any games to play for more than 10 minutes, so I'm not feeling much love for those great PC games at the moment :)

MGS 1 was great, why not love it? Metal Gear Solid 2 was MUCH more confusing and engrossing to me than MGS 3 was, i was rather dissapointed with MGS 3. they need to make a 4th, it'll be a launch titile for the PS3 i hope. I never said I didn't love MGS1 - I'm a big fan, it's just not as good as the other two in my opinion. Mostly due to the fact that it's shorter than your average three year old ;)
The next Metal Gear game really needs to follow on from MGS2 - they leave you with such a cliffhanger then go back in time for the third one. Gits!

Star Wars KOTOR
one of the best games and stories ever made
WHAT!?!? i think you might have missed something, KOTOR was great beceause of all the freedom and the addictiveness. it was fun, yes.
but the story was one of the worst of anygame i've ever seen, i didn't shed a single tear at the end, i had no revelation, there was no TRUE theme being relayed other than a bit of duality of human nature. when i play RPGs or other engrossing games i look for substance in the story, {MGS 1 and 2/FF 7 and 10. ect} games like that, or that atleast relay a better sense of story, i'll admit the plot twist with the whole Revan thing was cool, but other than that, that story was nothing more than a poorly written fairy tale with one small twist.

Good to see the age rating on games works, isn't it?
I enjoyed Manhunt, mostly because I found it challenging and had a good stealth engine. The violence was an added bonus, particularly when playing with friends after a few beers (cries of "Dude, you just cut that motherlover's head off!" still haunt my neighbours). I wouldn't say it was "top 5" though, it's good but not that good

did you play manhunt all the way through? that game is amazing. it is so sick and twisted and they did such a good job of capturing what they were going for which was to be sick and twisted and make you say "OH MY GOD DID THEY JUST KILL HIM WITH A CROWBAR!!!" it was hard as hell too. put it no hardcore you'll be there forever. scary, creppy, sadistic, fun, entertaining.
that game deserves more credit, and props to the rockstar and the developers/ creators for having the balls to go all out like that and be so brave to release a game of pure death and gore in todays liberal "games are bad" political standpoint. and YES blood does make a game sell, death sells, sex sells. violence sells. sick stuff sells. thats why they make it, cause people but it.
imagine conkers bad fur day. without blood or swearing or the wasted scarecrow or referance to drugs/beer/sex. it wouldn't be funny or entertaining at all!!!! Doom 3, same applies. the suffering, resident evil.
they gore/sickness of them is what makes them sell. Manhunt was a brilliant game. you have no taste in games. even if you didn't like the gameplay, {which i find hard to believe} they deserve props for being so outlandish and creative.
what other game lets you chase an asylum guard wearing a bunny suit hopping down the stairs screaming "oh **** hes after my f-ing key oh ****"
as he takes cover behind a sniper and 3 men with shotguns as you
pursue him with a hammer
what other game puts you in a prision with maniacs who think you stole their shoes and attack you with crowbars, meatcleavers and bats screaming about how they should have brought a cooler because the head of the moose they killed and raped is going stale?
manhunt is a stroke of brilliance so sick and twisted, how can you not love it?
manhunt is one of the most original, scary, twisted, enjoyable games of all time.

Tatsumaru I know what you mean I didnt "shed a tear" but that doesnt mean it wasnt a good story. Like you I whanted to know more as the story whent on for the majority of the game you are just finding out small bits of information as the story unfolds. And it was just damn addictive and for a singler player/offline game that was quite impressive so as i speak I am ordering Jade empire. Which is made by the same people Bioware so i excpect it to be very good :D .

Well first Manhunt sorry but i dissagree with you there mostly yes i comend rockstar for having the balls to do a game like that. However i didnt feel it was done right initaly it is a good game but after a while it seems a bit repetitve with not much new being added. I did like the end boss through as for once in a game the end boss wasnt some all mighty powerful being, as it usually is.
As for KOTOR the big plot twist was the Revan identity but it wasnt at the end of the game and I am not insulting your gameing taste we all have are own likes and dislikes. The FF series is good (in my opinion) but i didnt like the endings of the FF games i have played and to me the ending of a game is very important. And before you ask i have only played FF 8,9 and 10 but i would love to play 7 as all my freinds say its the best.

scratch SF III off my list (typo), replace with any alpha in the series, cause theres no Sagat in III
add gaurdian heroes (saturn), this is an under rated game that rocks, 100s of charecters to choose from in a fighting game, you cant beat that with a metal pipe ( for the manhunt fans IE Tekkengod) :D

Speaking of beating people with a pipe. Anyone here remember the game River City Ransom? That was one of the best and most under rated games ever!! It was all about getting "Stone Hands" and hitting someone with a pipe 3 times in under 1 second. :D Course that may be just me :D

MANHUNT, I LOVE MANHUNT, actually u get no metal pipe, but a baseball bat or a hand axe will suffice.
i take it if it was a saturn game it was 2d vomit or an early 3-d game?

Tekken 3. no, try Tekken Tag or Tekken 5. but yeah, 3 started the craze.
MGS was wonderful but i liked 2 a bit more. never a Big half life fan, but i just bought half life 2, we'll see. GTA was great. FF 7 is hands down quite possibly the greatest game ever made.

and yes, its no secret, i hate 2d fighting games with a passion. i want abit more depth and beauty to my game than foreward back up, and early PS1 graphics. but now that Namco vs Capcom is coming out i may have to change my ideas a bit.
www.gametrailers.com check it out. Tekken players= King. Paul. Lei. Law. Jin
SC2 players= Talim, nightmare, Maxi. Mitsirugi and one other i forget. this is gonna be a bad day for capcom, namco will slaughter them

STREETS OF RAGE!!! Homer i forgive your nintendo fanboy ways just for reminding me of this classic. It was the best thing ever when i was a kid, running around swinging drain pipes at evil punks heads! I love that game so much, i had it on the compilation cartridge thing with golden axe and revenge of shinobi i think, they were pretty damn good too. The only game i would put above streets of rage in the classics list is the duck hunt and mario bros NES game cartridge :D

In terms of gaming only, there actually probably the richest company of all three. They got around 6 or 9 BILLION $ safely stored in the bank :D
But i'm no fanboy (hate the word ;) ) I just think they make the most enjoyable games (dont really play anymore tho :( ). Playstation is also great. Xbox is the only console i got no buisness with. The only games of intrest on that side i can play on other platforms :D

Nintendo's consoles and first party games are not the problem. It's the thrid party support that's killing them. Neither Sony nor Microsoft makes console games that can compare with what Nintendo puts out. The difference is that 90% of Nintendo's good games have been made by Nintendo whereas the X-Box and Playstation games are predominately third party.

I OWN a Gamecube and think it's a superior machine to the Playstation 2 (without the versatility of CD and DVD compatibility). Once again, the lack of quality games is due to the lack of third party support. That said, I can name more good console-exclusive Gamecube games off the top of my head than X-Box.

Gamecube-only games that are good (off the top of my head):
Resident Evil 4
Metroid Prime
Metroid Prime 2
Super Smash Bros. Melee
Mario Power Tennis
Legend of Zelda: Windwaker
X-Box:
Halo
Halo 2
Jade Empire
Fable
Ninja Gaiden
I stand by my statement that the Gamecube is technologically superior to the Playstation 2 (both graphically and speedwise). You are correct that the X-box is more powerful than both, but I was not talking about the X-Box at all; I was simply defending the Gamcube from your ignorant statement.
I will gladly continue discussing this, but only if you curtail the arrogance and childishness and try discuss things in an appropriate manner.

mario tennis was vomit. so that leaves 5 games. and 5 for the box. now add
KOTOR 1
FOTOR 2
X-men Legends {which was simply better for x-box than for the PS2}
but i won't defend the box, i'm not too fond of either.
as for the PS2. hell, that would require a few pages.

You've missed the point. We are discussing two things. The first is that the Gamecube has better technology than PS2 (which is true). The second is that the Gamecube DOES have several good Gamecube-only games, despite the fact that most are made by Nintendo.
There is no doubt that PS2 has more great games than both systems combined (one need only look to GTA, Final Fantasy, and MGS to tip the scales). But that certainly does not make the PS2 BETTER, simply a better gaming choice. That does not make the Gamcube a poor machine, just an under-utilized machine.
You can talk all you want about the superiority of PS2, but aside from being able to play a CD/DVD, it IS in fact inferior in all ways (technically, not games) to the Gamecube.

post the specs of the GC would you.
ok then let me rephrase my statement. the PS2 is the best choice for quality of gaming, which is what makes a system.
also, i'd say that the ability to play the most dominant form of both music and movie is more than enough to outweight what ever flaws one may claim the PS2 to have.

thanks, i'll do some research for comparison in the morning.
and i have to say that the PS2 pad is the best controller, and the box's S Type isn't too bad either. but the PS2 pad is just so much more well rounded and comfortable to me. the GC pad just feels off to me. certainly not made for shooters or fighting games of any considerable depth. the X-box pad is too big and bulky, even the small S types are just not what the Dualshock has come to be. it is the golden standard for controllers.
