View Full Version : Which Browser is Best!
Let the Browser War begin...
I use Opera, with IE as my secondary browser. Opera knocks the socks off IE, but not every site works in it, although it has got way better with version 7.xx. The best things about it are that you can surf in multiple windows, thus saving space on the taskbar, and system resources. You can also take out, and add in special features you want/need, so you can have it exactly how you want it. It's crashed twice in the entire time I've been using it, and it has a built in Google search feature.

Mozilla Firebird by choice.
IE6 for anything that doesn't work in it.
Like Opera it has tabbed Browsing, built in Google etc.
And Bill Gates doesn't get a dime :p

I just don't much like tabbed browsing! It annoys me..

It really doesn't matter much to me, as long as there's a browser that most if not all people use worldwide. A lot of time is spent developing sites to be as cross browser compatible as possible but personally I'd very much like to cut that time down to a minimum. Eventually all online content will have to be cross platform as well (phones and other devices) and this will just be another hurdle for developers. It would be great if all the browsers followed W3C standard to the letter or have a single browser for everyone.
A browser to unit is all :D

Opera is my first choice (so much so I even paid for it!) but as Kgirl said it doesn’t work on all sites, for my backup browser I use a fairly new browser on the scene called Avant Browser, it uses IE's engine but does things like tabbed browsing, popup control, records cleaner and URL alias and it's free!
Unfortunately it also has IE's weaknesses.

OK.... you guys have to help me make up my mind.
I have IE 5.5 ... suppose I should upgrade to 6.
But since I have Netscape at work, I am thinking about switching over to it... also for the reasons SS posted, ... no pop ups (although I do have Pop-Up stopper)
It's just that I need a new email account (I'm getting seeverely spammed with Yahoo) With this email I can access through AOL instant messenger (right now I have the Lycos AOL Instant Messenger) and when upgrading it does automatically configure that IM account (buddy list) to the upgrade along with saving all your IE favorites in a Bookmarks menu in the Netscape browser.
Should I or shouldn't I??

Hi KC
I'd say that if you were going to use Netscape I think that going for Mozilla(http://www.mozilla.org/) is better. I use Mozilla a lot on Linux machines in uni and netscape is very annoying when it comes to chaning text sizes and that. Mozilla is nicer (and the odd thing is it's pretty much like Netscape anyway, maybe that's because it's using Netscape technology? I'm not sure on that).
Anyway Mozilla is pretty good(in my humble opinion at least :)).
Although if you are going to stick with IE, yeah do upgrade to 6or at least make sure that your keeping IE 5.5 up to date from Windows Update (http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/), regardless of what browser(even if you end up using Netscape or Mozilla, if you have Windows, getting critical updates is always good! {steps of Computer Guy "Keep Up To Date" soapboax :Angel:}
Hope that helps anyway. :)

I thought AOL was built upon netscape unless they changed back again i know it was at some point and would account for the rubbishy nature of it :)

AOL used to be based on IE. They then bought netscape, and started using that instead. As far as I know they have not swapped back.

Just out of curiosity, I'd like to know how many of the people who voted IE have ever tried anything else *stirs pot of trouble*. However, I do use IE6, I downloaded Opera and Netscape to test my website, but couldn't be bothered switching, maybe I should, for the lack of pop-ups.
EDIT: I didn't vote, because, since I haven't tested them all, I don't think I'm qualified to say.

I never got to brows the web with a Mac ... my school was too tight fisted to get on the internet. But personaly I always thought Macs were too slow ... but they did only run at 16MHz at that time ... dam I feel old now. Anyway I use Netscape 7.2 (I think).
From a web designers point of view Opera 7 is way too weird. It's like a freaky hybrid of IE and Netscape. Gives me nightmares.
From a users point of view IE (any version) is too slow on Windows 98. Since XP seems to make every PC perform like an old 286 on it's last burst of life I'd realy hate to see what happens if I ever combine the two.
On the does AOL use IE or Netscape thing ... last time i tested with AOL ... version 7 I think it reported it was using IE4. All verconfusing since they own Netscape.
Mozzila is the open source version of the Netscape browser. It uses Gecko, the HTML translator engine thing thingy that Netscapes been making so much noise about.

Just for the record, new Macs with OSX are a different breed from the ones we all grew up with. With virtual pc running, there is literally nothing I could do with a PC that I can't do with this.
Computer expert I'm not, but for the home user, mac rocks the microphone.

With virtual pc running....
Virtual PC type software is great. I can run Linux / Windows2003 / NT4 / Win95 all in different Windows on my XP machine. Linux can also use it to run Windows etc.
With the power of todays hardware, speed is becoming less and less of an issue, and I think virtual pc's will become more and more common.
The new Mac's are certainly different beasts to the one's I grew up with. It's a shame they lost so much ground to MS in the past through trying to control both the software and hardware. Perhaps if this had not been the case computer software would be much more open and run over a variety of OS's.
I still think if they released a £150 version of OS/X for x86 PC's it would be a great seller, and I cant see why this would be difficult.
Oh well, ho hum!

Mac OS X != Mac Classic. Mac Classic was a wanna-be OS that fails at true multi-tasking. Sorta-like Windows w/o the constant virus alerts.
I am a hardcore Linux user, that orginally bought a powerbook to install Debian Linux on it. however, before I did that I figure I give Mac OS X a try, considering its a BSD Unix Kernel. Let just say I never installed Debian. Mac OS X, is user-friendly (way more then windows), I can do all the hardcore unix I want.

There is 2 reason Apple won't to that.
[1] Apple has declared its as a hardware company, that only makes somewre for it hardware. The only reason iTunes came out for Windows is because of the iPod.
[2] Mac are a PowerPC architecture system. With uses among other things Big Endian storage (upper bytes stored first), while X86 architecture systems use Little Endian (lower bytes stored first). in addition the instruction set for the Motarola Processor is competely different then the Intel/AMD set. Therefore, PowerPC and X86 OS must be different at the kernel level. This is why the Linux kernel as so many options for architecture. It would take a serious effort and $ to convert MAC OS X to X86.

i'm using mostly mozilla 1.6 of recent. IE6 makes the pooter crash about every 3 1/2 minutes. Ii upgraded from IE6 to something called Avant which is much better but only skins on top of the basic interface so it still crashes all the time.
i haven't tried the 'lesser' mozilla builds (firebird, phoenix, firefox or whatnot) yet and i can't really be bothered until they at least get this side of the decimal point (0.7 anyone?)

I use IE six, netscape sucks(I am forced to use it at work-it is slow, will not load pages correctly, prone to pop-ups and home page switches-sucks).
About the apple osx statments-OS X is unix(you know the OS developed over 30 years ago), Linux is basicly unix.
If Linux works on intel/amd architecture,so would OS X.

Funny thing...I just did a report in college on the different browsers...of course I have it done but I would have liked to get these opinions before I finished it. Oh well.
I have Mozilla, Opera, IE6 (because you have to have it), and Netscape all on my computer. I have them to test my web sites I create in them. As to my favorite I would say it is a toss up between Mozilla and Opera...both kick the #%$ out of IE6, the workings of IE7 are in place and I think they have gotten the point to add some new features.

now i've dual booted linux (twice successfully, now buggered) i had good experiences with konqueror. shame about the lack of proper 5-button mouse support in the OS, means the left extra button is home and the right one in the context menu, again (same as right click). so annoying when you're allowed to go back and forward without reaching for buttons in your browser/on the keyboard/whatever.

I still use IE, but I'm using Opera more and more. For example, in my room I've got an old P200 junk parts computer (yeah yeah, a relic, but its good for old games :p) and IE crapped out on it for some reason so I used Opera and its been running better and faster than IE ever did, and smoother too. I use it on my main computer too, but its still kinda half n' half IE/Opera. Although, Opera doesn't seem to like the MAP chat very much, which is a big no no :D

Microsoft has really lacked recently on there development of internet explorer. there hasn't been any updates for at least a year. microsoft just isn't up to technological standards when it comes to browsing. mozilla has to be the choice. for one it has built in pop up blocker that works better than any pop up blocker i used when i used to use IE. you can also do tabbed browsing which is nice. plus it's free! it feels faster also (or is that just me?). overall it runs and handles much better than IE
