What are the benefits of performing exercises using the pyramid set system?
How does this method compare to 3 or 4 sets to failure?

Check out the book Scientific Approach to Bodybuilding by Dr. Hatfield...
In short, pyramiding will help you incorporate more and different types of muscle fibers. Short and long twitch. And, you will overload the muscle by using muscle fatigue and lifting to just under failure.
The book can explain it in greater detail, but that's it in a nutshell...
